  • Before there were roads along the coast of British Columbia, the BC Forestry Dept. had a fleet of boat to inspect the lands under their control. In the early 70s the BC government sold the fleet when access by plane and helicopter became more effective. Since that time the vessels have been in private hands. Each year there is a reunion of former BC Forest service boats. In 2012, the 100th anniversary of the Department of Forestry, the boats gathered in Victoria on BC Day. The boats were a variety of shapes and configurations, from the 81ft Syrene to smaller vessels. All show the care that the government and the current private owners give to them.

How interesting. My father was a Forest Ranger, and I remember seeing the Syrene come to Alert Bay. Dad had the Wells Gray as his get-around boat. This was during the late 40s. Some very interesting memories have been stirred by seeing this, and a couple of other pages. Thanks very much from Barry Langstroth
