Big fan of your work but one question...how can you prove that this is not a reproduction of that reproduction or that this is your ideea and not of that person?
I just watched a video of this type of contraption that was done a few years back. Let's be clear, not making a jointer, it's a called a planer, and your making a planer table, not a jointer!
I'm not in the habit of giving compliments to other tradesmen, but I've got to make an acceptation of you. I've been a carpenter all my life. 4 th generation and I'm 60. A lifetime of woodworking, building tools because sometime I couldn't afford to go out and buy one, or they didn't make what I needed. You Sir have blown my mind at your genius, creative, mind blowing expert craftsmanship. Good for you Sir.
As a fellow woodworker, I have watched your builds with great interest and I must say that I am somewhat in awe of your ability to create good tools out of simple materials. I have manufacturer's versions of these tools in my shop but I can honestly say that I don't believe they are any better and in some ways not as good as what you have made. You, sir, are a genius and I salute you!
After discovering you absolutely fantastic channel I thought I've seen every woodworking hack there is? Being a man of 75 I am realising your can teach an old dog new tricks. 😮😮❤
7/31/2020 USA Grandpa Bill: I'm watching two of the world's most sensitively artistic hands describe in wood the creations of fine intelligence. The precision of movement, the carefully thought out demonstrations to the viewer in meditative silence speak of a soul melded to his craft who is emotionally considerate of his audience, a teacher with much wisdom for someone so apparently young. It is a pleasure to watch you work. I am grateful you are on TH-cam and sharing with the world your gifts.
This is the best DIY tool video I have ever watched on You Tube. The author of this video is a real professor: he is accurate, precise, practical, reliable, clean, respects the properties of the material and makes sense for aesthetics… Bravo! The warmest greetings from Serbia.
Well... I couldn't be more impressed... This benchtop jointer from a hand planer is just another in a series of home-built machines... The drill press in wood, with a vise in wood, and a belt sander in wood... The craftsmanship is just incredible... I'm subscribed...
This guy is 100% amazing. The level of detail and craftsmanship is unmatched on youtube. Very impressive sir, thank you for the clean, precise, and well executed video content.
give this guy a well stocked hardware store, a government budget, and he could get you to the moon and back, and keep most of the government budget. Well Done, Sir!
There is no comparison, you are way better than everyone else, then without music which only serves to disturb, without speaking you enchant me, watching your videos makes me feel good, and you learn a lot. I thank you for having published so many very instructive works ,Thank you
WOW, I am SO GLAD I have come across this instructional video. I recently purchased an electric planer, I have'nt used it much though due to difficulties getting a good square planing or end up with a planed work piece that ended up thinner at one end than the other lol. Anyway THIS is just what I need. NOT ONLY is this a GREAT piece of work but the video production here is EXCELLENT. Totally captivating. Such clear, calm, patient depiction of attention to detail made me think as I was watching this video "this is how a how-to-video SHOULD be done". THANK YOU for this great piece of work and THANK YOU for such a great video of how to do it. By the way I LOVE the way that the work piece can be held at a precise angle so as to create a planed bevel. Marvellous. (now I can make my gazebo style bird house roof sections with the precise bevels that I need).
The calmness and focus you have when you build things are true joy to watch. And the your design of a benchtop jointer is a very good and useful one much better than a lot of others I've seen.
Very impressive design. So, I got the plan downloaded and made one for myself. It works well. I made two alterations. Instead of the epoxy compound that you used to support the planer, I used cup shaped struts fixed to the piece (where you used two wood screws to anchor the epoxy.) The struts were made easily by cutting a hole on a square piece of plywood and dividing it in the middle. Similarly, at the front, I used two obtuse angled triangles. I encountered another problem. The front of the plane tended to tilt down. So I used another strut piece which was left unglued, because it caused difficulty to turn knob for plane blade adjustment
9 minutes and 20 seconds before the first clamp made an appearance. I'm both amazed and impressed; now I'm wondering if all the other woodworking people on TH-cam are sponsored by clamp companies. :)
it is a power demonstration in all gentle trains. use a lot of different material and in the end like a large orchestra, presenting a world-shattering piece of music. it is remarkable how closely you look at these tools, and if I may say so, you wake up tired looking woodworking machine to live. really amazing
By far the best benchtop jointer diy-style which is really well designed and well manufactured. A solution you can build by yourself at home with little special technical equipment...well done. I think i might going to build it by myself.
I just love watching your videos about making tools to make tools which in turn will make more tools to make tools and better tools to improve the tools which were made - this is art 👍🏻 thank you from the UK 🇬🇧
Definitely the best hand plane to jointer as you even included safety features that a lot haven’t. Only improvement would be to include an emergency stop option.
Like plugging it into a powerboard fixed to the side of it that has a stop button/switch might be what I would do if I were to make one. Completely agree with what you say about that being the only improvement!

Another "woodworking art form" video! The hand motions tell the tale: gentle, accurate, unhurried, respectful, efficient. Japanese culture recognizes and respects these things. We Americans basically don't get it. This is not to idolize one set of cultural values over another (each has its use); but, it is amazing to see these behaviors reflected in woodworking videos. Also, these videos show tools made with relatively simple hand tools, in a highly efficient shop, in a small (and very clean) space. Very, very refreshing (and instructive).
Just adding to Don's comments. The positive is that 95% plus think that your work is pretty cool. Well done and very nice work by the way. It just shows that creative types like you don't always have to spend the big bucks on machinery to achieve great outcomes.
And for his next video project, watch as he demonstrates how to build a nuclear submarine out of plywood and glue -- and it functions BETTER THAN ANY OTHER SUBMARINE IN THE WORLD! Awesome design and inspiring! You sir are a genius and an amazing Master Craftsman!!! Bless you for sharing and inspiring!!! I am happy to found your channel and will share it.
Sir, it's simple, which is why it's accurate, but let there be no mistake, not simple to build. This does show, even in your other tools, how versatile 3/4" Baltic birch plywood can be.
Your straight-line gluing at 7:20 was impressive; I have to guide mine with a finger. Oh, I just realized I'm watching it at 1.5 speed! . This is a must do for me, as I have a virtually identical planer only it is a DeWalt. Subscribed.
A great video, I have watched your work with admiration, I am now very motivated to make such a fantastic planing table myself! Thank you very much. Greetings from Gerry - Amsterdam the Netherlands
arigato I love they way you do the work. it is full of knowledge, so detail planed, carefully done, & well finished. Besides, you also give "room" for ether modification or custom development from your sugested design. again, arigato gozaimasu.
check out the strength tests between screws and wood glue sometime. very often, the wood fails before the glue does. and pound for pound glue beats screws consistently since it's [i have read] molecularly bound to the wood's molecules while screws are bound only mechanically to the piece.
Thanks for showing this creation. What I like most about your version, is the plane remains itself, no removal of any parts of it, so it is easily removed and portable....B R I L L I A N T !!!!!
Your work is clear, your demonstrations detailed and well presented. There was no redundancies in your conduct to distract from your work. Very high natural talent for teaching; no bulshit about yourself. No talk is just great. We can see what you are doing in the littlest detail. As for no screws, no clamps I leave it to you. I know that very good and lasting assemblies are possible that way with epoxy glues. I made wood mast some forty feet high, which withstood many a strong blow on the ocean, day after day, and never showed a sign of weakness. As for the sheer value of so much talent, work, and time employed to produce a small though beautiful tool; well, if that is what you chose to do you have done it to perfection. Give a thought to building boats.
In watching all of your videos, I have seen many unique and very nice tools. Are any of them available to purchase here in the U.S.? In particular your measuring square and the double anvil clamp you use to clamp things to your work bench. You are a fantastic woodworker/designer/engineer and your videos are fantastic. Please DO keep them coming.
So, so impressed by the way you have build this with finesse and like a artist working on some very delicate project . Love it and love your patience and talent . Thank you .😊👌
He is an example of high functioning fabricator tradesman . He is not just patient and precise he is clean which is often overlooked when learning to be as good . He reminds me of the ancient Japanese woodworkers with his tempo
The epoxy putty is a great idea. The pads at rear of the planer are relying on the putty adhering to the wood. A stronger fix would have wood reinforcement over the soft putty. But that could be added.
