Dave Mallett - Garden Song

  • Perhaps the finest performance ever recorded of Garden Song - by songwriter Dave Mallett, 1993. With Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas, Brent Mason, Glen Worf, and Harry Stinson. Many people think of this as a children's song; when Dave Mallett sings it, it's a working man's song.

Dave, I don't know if you will see this comment, but I hope that you will. I have six children whose ages range from 12 - 32, and I have sung this song to every one of them. My third child loved this song SO much that he would ask me to sing it over and over again at bedtime. Strangely, he called it the "Peach Song," although no peaches are ever mentioned....Perhaps a peach tree is what he wanted to plant in his garden. This son of mine is now married with two little girls of his own, and he sings this song to them. Thank you for such a sweet song to pass on from generation to generation. Before this moment, I had never heard you sing the song. What a gentle and beautiful voice you have! I think that this is my favorite rendition, and why shouldn't it be. The words came from your soul. God bless you, and thank you!

I sang this song to my kids at bed time - used to think it was about gardening, but I think now it is a metaphor about nurturing and growing the next generation. Love this version!

Some time about 1978/79 I was browsing the folk bins in a store in NH. I had never heard of Dave Mallett but something told me that I would never regret buying it. If only every intuition I had was as good as that one.

i too sang this to my kids and loved every incarnation of it we heard...one christmas trying to finish my knitting in time for the big day, i even paraphrased it to make a new verse..... inch by inch row by row gotta make this sweater grow....

My dad was a heavy-duty gardener. At his funeral I had this song, and "Home Grown Tomatoes" played. With this song there were lots of tears. With HGT there was laughter.

Wonderful song and rendition done by his own writer, Dave Mallet. I fell in love with his gem THE GARDEN SONG when I visited the United Kingdom in 1988 and never stopped to hear it out since then. Such a therapeutic song about a simple garden we all would love to have and keep.

@DragonReborn886 John Denver was a great performer and he certainly deserves a lot of credit for making this song well known. I will only say that Dave's performance makes me believe that he not only knows what it's like to till a vegetable garden by hand, but has a passion for it. I don't hear that in anyone else's.

Wonderful! I've seen Dave Mallett perform at the Common Ground Fair in Unity, ME - it's a really cool agricultural fair that features primarily organic and natural goods that are made or processed in Maine. Dave truly has a lovely voice, and yes, I have to agree with the others who say even though other singers have done a lovely job with his song, the songwriter himself does it best. :)

Recorded by many, but no one does it like David Mallett. I had the privilege to shoot some video of him doing this song at Noel Stookey's studio back at the end of the 70s. The song had been around just a little while and I don't think he ever imagined its elegance would be such a major part of his musical legacy.

I learned this song from Pete Seeger & Arlo Guthrie albums decades ago. I found myself singing it this morning on the drive to work and had to come find the video for my 15 month old daughter to watch. We usually live around LA in a condo, but we're with her grandparents for some months where they have rice fields and a large vegetable garden. She loves the garden & (am I projecting myself?) seems to love this song. Thanks!

    Mariposa, oruga,
    expresiones de la bella vida.
También nosotros - el ciclo se va
    a completar con nuestro amor.
    coro
    verso 2:
    Inténtalo y ya ves
    la profunda sencillez.
Cuida a otro y de una vez
    eres parte del ciclo.
    Ciclo, ciclo, reciclar -
    el reciclaje original.
    Cantando voy a cultivar
    el futuro contigo.

One day, people who are turning Mars into a new home for Earthlife will sing it this way:
Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow
Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down
Digging frost, crushing stone, Gonna make this world our own
Fertilize it with our bones, Put our life into the land
Mirrors shine, comets fall, Mars awakens at our call
Lots of work, but worth it all for a planet made by hand
Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow
Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down
Awful dry, awful cold, and the soil is awful old
Superoxides won't unfold 'till you talk to them just right
But we endure, we persist, old Mars just can't resist
Life works like an alchemist with water, air and light
Inch by inch, row by row, gonna make this garden grow
Work the soil and the slow 'till we make it fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row, God bless these seeds I sow
Mars warm them from below, 'till the rain comes tumbling down
And the rain will fall on Mars, and the crops will grow, and Martians will gather and sing the old songs, and remember the people who created them, and the people who preserved them and carried them to new worlds, along with Earth's other seeds.
Because Octavia Butler was right: It is the destiny of Earthlife to take root among the stars.
