So, as a Greek, I am the economic crisis veteran. First of all, don't worry, you won't experience the devastation we have experienced for the last 12 years. It affected primarily those of us who are now 25-45 and the stories we can tell you are a pure nightmare. My little advice is this: chin up and don't stop buying. You don't have to go for a high price point, but still try to buy things that bring you joy so that you can PSYCHOLOGICALLY survive this crisis. You MUST become strategic buyers and great planners. We make a meal plan for a week and buy that. It helps prevent overspending. With fashion buy staples. I wish you will never go through what we've been through, I wish that you will continue to be a happy and priviledged generation. Be patient and take care everyone.

Having been through 2 periods like this, one where the interest rates went up to 14%, the only thing I would say is “don’t blame yourself”. The media wasn’t as thorough then and we just thought it was down to how we ran the business when things got tough. But as has been said, you plan and get through it. It doesn’t last long.

Josie you just get better and better. The section on financial was brilliant. You have done something that other influencers haven't which is address the economic elephant in the room. This must be a worrying time for those whose livelihoods depend on people spending. I was in a fixed term mortgage which was due to end in Nov 2022. In March this year I foresaw that interest rates would go up. I shopped around and paid an early redemption fee to get out of the remaining fixed term and got a new deal and fixed in for 5 years. It has already paid for itself. First time I have ever predicted with accuracy. I know nothing about stocks, shares or investing. Well done for talking about this. A lot of people will be cutting out non-essentials.

@@Magarita810 - Huge waste of money, but it does keep the locals employed. :-) I don't follow the mindset of ripping things apart and filling up landfills because you've changed your style over a span of one year or so. People can do what they want with their money, but seriously the landfill issue is a huge turn-off for me.

    • @danishpastry6137

We paid our mortgage off at new year, so happy we could do this (after a couple of years hard saving), as with soaring energy prices, it means we won't be so hard hit. We remortgaged a few times (with lower interest rates and shorter mortgage period each time), the last time we did so we had a 10 year flexible rate capped mortgage which gave us a good interest rate, and in theory we should have had 3 years left - the plan was to save, so that we could pay the last bit off, but we knew that even with worst case scenario, (us not having saved enough and potential soaring interest rates) we could remortgage so our monthly payments were do-able even if it meant paying the rest over more than 3 years. We looked into remortgaging a couple of times during the last 10 years, but the gains were negligible and the administration costs too high. If I was taking out a mortgage now, I'd be going for a fixed rate for the whole term (which is what we started out with), because there's peace of mind knowing that you're never going to pay more than that.
As far as pensions go, it generally makes more sense to invest early, as this money gets to work (and hopefully grow) over the max number of years.
As Josie says, make sure you get good advice as everyone's situation is different. And be aware that banks are trying to sell you a product (their loan) so their advice may be biased. With our old bank, as soon as our mortgage was paid, we weren't attractive customer's so our bank charges went up - we've now moved banks!

Just to flag Josie, the interest rates going up is actually a tool by the Bank of England to CURB inflation. It doesn’t drive inflation increases. When the bank increases interest it encourages saving as you said so the objective is to reduce inflation. Shortages in supplies, or excessive demand drives inflation

Yes! Speaking to the situation in the US right now, there have been too many dollars out there competing for products. It's a supply and demand situation that is driving inflation. Boosting interest rates cools off spending and eventually brings inflation back down.

Every vlogger/ lifestyle blogger / magazine should touch on finances. It’s SO important for women especially to have the freedom of choice in who they live with / the partner they choose and the power they have in all relationships -not to mention how they live in their advanced years. The sparkly dresses and shoes and the spending are giving me life. But for for these channels to be more than aspirational fantasies we need to know how to make the money and keep some of it /manage it well. Well done Josie!

This was an absolutely amazing vlog. You touched on so much! First, your dress to the opera was incredible. I don’t know which one you went to but if you were less than enamoured with it, may I suggest you see The Barber of Seville next time. It’s fun and very entertaining! As for your financial piece, it’s never too late to learn and get a handle about how money and the world we live in work. I totally agree it should be taught in school (we are making some headway in this regard here in Canada) but as parents, we took it into our own hands and shared everything we knew with our children during their teen years. We didn’t want them to go out into the world without this very important tool! But it does seem to be a difficult topic for many. Keep doing YOU…you never know how your opening up about finances might help someone.

Love the Finance piece Josie! I work as a financial planner for a career and am 25 years old for age reference. I agree with what you are saying, there is a lot of uncertainty in the economy right now but the best way to learn is from the history of the economy. My best advice for anyone is to live within your means, don't let lifestyle creep catch up to you. Hold your investments because once it goes back up, you will reap the benefits! Bull economy will be on its way soon!

I totally agree with you about being taught more at school, I am in the older age group of your analytics , 54! I was never taught about interest rates, mortgage rates etc, I didn’t even know what an overdraft was, i think it’s very important to know how to budget so we don’t get into debt at an early age. This has to be a priority rather than being taught about subjects that will never be of use to you when you leave school.

Thanks for the financial talk. I am a fashion shopping addict but I made a commitment to stop buying anything fashion related until I hit a particular financial goal. At that point when I reach my goal, I told myself I could get 1 fashion item. It has been almost a month and I know it is still early but I suspect it will take me about 6 months to hit my financial goal. I am also greatly reducing other expenses where I can. For example I love reading but I told myself no more buying any books until I read at least 10 books. It is so easy to walk into a book store or browse on Amazon and buy a book that looks interesting. The book can wait. I've committed to no Black Friday shopping and I will only being buying a small number of Christmas presents for just a few people. I've loved shopping for years but it got so much worse during the pandemic because I wasn't going anywhere. I wasn't spending money on travel or basically any type of entertainment. I sort of recently woke up and came to the conclusion I have to stop the shopping. I want to start traveling again and doing other things. I'm 46 by the way. I'm at the age where isn't isn't my first recession but I do think I was a more savvy shopper durning the last one. I do have a retirement acct, and other investments that I haven't touched. I think this is a wake up call for everyone.
Edited due to the fact of another comment I saw: Regardless of your level of understanding on the topic, it is a wonderful thing that you started this conversation and are learning. You don't have to be an expert on something to start a conversation. Sorry for going on and on but I'm seriously impressed you were open to this discussion on a public forum.

Josie! You're so RIGHT!! We need to demystify money and unstable times. I'm 56... and I've been through a couple recessions. I'm here to tell you that not everyone has the same experience, but mine was positive. I was always working, and working in Higher Education IT, so I was working a LOT. I was able to help support charities, and so forth. This time, I've just retired. Yikes! But the thing is... there's no real reason for this recession. People are still working, jobs are still very available, as you've said... so there's no real boogeyman. I'm an optimist with a good, stable pension. I know that with responsibility and care, and a rehiring of all those positions (like mine), where folks have retired... this will not be something of which to be afraid. Yet, I've been careful now with purchases...and supporting those who need support more than I. Giving and spending (a bit), continually, is what helped in years past. Just my experience... go forth without fear, Fear...(see what I did there?) Economies always bounce back...

I'm glad you enjoyed the Opera - not really my cup of tea either but there are some fantastic arias from the more well know ones e.g. Turandot/Nabucco/Madame Butterfly. Which one did you see?
Btw the 'words' are called the 'Libretto' and all Opera houses screen them in English as Operas are often sung in Italian (or German if you're seeing Wagner). Often they're on the back of the chair in front of you - like La Scala in Milan (you can actually choose your language there).
Get a CD of Opera classics - it's a good way of getting to know the music.

I was listening to the news here in Ireland, basically saying average mortgage over the last few years is 300.000 euros and with interest rates going up it means for every 100.000 you are paying a extra 150 euros a month more and it's going up again. That with everything else, give an example, before Christmas a bag of coal was €19.50c now €30. So 3 bags of coal a week is about €31 more, To fill a tank of home heating oil 900 litres was well under €500 now around €1200, and u would fill it up two and half times a year so say 1800 a year more, we used to put about €300 into the car and got 4 weeks it's about €600 or more . A average family of 4 are spending around and this is at the bottom end €30 a week more on food shop. My electricity bill was always 93 to 95 a month just before Christmas was 110 now 200. So if u say your mortgage u have is 100,000 its costing around / your spending €173 a week more for the same things. And if the mortgage is 300.000 thats around €248 a week more. ( that's not Including your home heating oil . ) I think people are just not going to spend only on essentials. And this is going to effect people of all ages. And looking at it the uk is the same if not worse.
I did do calculations very quickly while listening and watching u.

Josie! I thoroughly enjoyed your vlog. You looked absolutely gorgeous in that dress. I am an opera buff who always dress to the nines for the opera. Next time listen to a few arias on You Tube before going to the opera. Most theatre have discussions an hour or so before the performance, this will give you an idea of what the plot is about. Thus, allow you to concentrate more on the performance than on the overhead supertitles. All three of you looked beautiful.

Hi Josie, financial knowledge is so important for us all, but particularly, I feel, for women so we can be financially independent. As they say ‘information is power’ and when you understand what’s going on you have more control.
My second piece of advise is ‘live within your means’ and be honest about what you really ‘need’. Don’t feel hard done by with economising; for long term financial comfort, most of us need to decide where we want to be in the future (property ownership etc) then plan backwards to where it all starts… today! 👍

Here in the United States, what you’re saying is correct! I would encourage everyone also anyone that can afford to buy their basic groceries do so now rather then later! You will want to be able to stabilized them so on your shelf they last for a long period of time!!! Now would be the time to stock up, as gas prices go up,, and diesel fuel becomes very difficult to get, at least in the USA. It would behoove us all to have a well-stocked pantry!!! Flour, Sugar, Salt, herbs,& seasonings that would be what I stocked up on, also dried milk, because milk may be hard to come by!

Enjoy seeing all the beautiful dresses, the hotel looked lovely. I spotted a shake shack near my parents, I must try it. As for finance talk, I enjoyed it. I have been through 2 recessions, so I'm anxious, but keeping myself focused on work. I am glad u addressed this talk, if only to get people curious and look at stuff like this for themselves. I learnt so much in the past 10 yrs re:mortgages and pensions. On a lighter note, the doggies after a bath are so cute 🥰🥰🥰😆

Even here in the US, finances are not taught widely or nearly enough! I'm thankful my dad works in the stock market, so I learned a bit of this from him and always have him as a resource, but nothing beats a little trial-and-error investing yourself and watching your money move!

Hi Josie Darlin😊. This video on finances was so valuable ❣️❣️. I’m in your 7% bracket (73), but I’ve been a loyal follower for almost 4 years now. ADORE your style & cooking videos. Ten years ago I read a book by Dave Ramsey: Total Money Makeover. It changed our life!!! I wish we had gotten smart about money/saving/spending when we were your age; we learned late.😮. But it did make a HUGE difference by applying what we learned. Just goes to show it’s really never too late to “smarten up”. Wishing you bliss & blessings💛🧡❤️
