    Thanks for the video. Scott, not once did you crowd the ball like you demonstrated in your rally with Nate . You were around 3 feet away every time. I'm a baseline hugger and I take the ball on rise on nearly every ball. The technique I use basically a shortened stroke like a service return but with more topspin for balls hit with pace. If it;s a rally ball, you can use your normal stroke but in every instance, timing is critical so you really have to watch the ball come off the ground. Most of the time, I don't hit a fast ball back but I get enough pace, like a rally ball, so that my opponent is late to the ball and I'm a great position for the next shot.

    I didn't see any crowding of the ball in the rally. Looked like normal ground strokes, not taking on the rise except for the one ball that landed near the baseline.

      In the rallies, it’s more like he is taking the ball at the apex in the second session, whereas he is letting it drop in the first session. I think taking the ball at the apex of the bounce is a good way of practicing taking the ball earlier for many players, and it already has some of the desired effect. Once you master taking the ball at the apex, then you can gradually train taking it earlier and earlier.

      I agree but to be fair, you don’t need to take it in the rise unless it comes to the back of the court. For the majority of the rally, Nate was hitting it shorter and not as deep which made it so Scott didn’t have to really take it on the rise except for that one shot on the baseline

    i think you can train hitting the ball on the rise in different situations too,when you have advantage in the point and you attackin the ball usually the opponent gives you a dead high ball on inside the T side you need to learn how to take the ball on the rise and not wait because the opponent get back or just there are a lot of dead balls that are high without speed and you need to hit the ball with open stance or semi-open i thought at the beginning that this video would be about this.

    Learning how to hit on the rise especially with my 1 handed backhand to avoid hitting tough weak high backhand shots & what's shown here. Or I would back off too far from baseline opponent could just end the point with a simple drop shot, don't wanna do that . . I feel backhand side is easier than forehand so far due to shorter backswing but both sides need a lot of work & getting better on my timing now. Great tips 😎 !!

  • @TonyHigginsonVlog
    @TonyHigginsonVlog 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This technique of getting the front foot to the bounce of the ball seemed to work great, but this is only for a moonball type shot surely as you demonstrated, and not for a heavy topspin shot. Later on when returning the heavy topspins, you were around 15 ft from the bounce which I would say is hardly taking it early. at 6.25 the ball bounced in the service box and you were positioned behind the baseline?

    • @Playyourcourt
      @Playyourcourt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tony Higginson fair assessment but one simply can’t take every ball off the short hop. Taking the ball that early is resigned to balls struck deep in the court or a short ball that we have already moved forward on. We often think of OTR as just off the bounce but it also applies to taking the ball before it reaches the apex of its bounce. This is what separates it from a shape and denotes it as a drive. Interesting note, this idea is exactly what makes Nadal’s ball so difficult. If his ball always bounced deep everyone would simply take it on the rise. It’s the fact that his ball falls shorter in the court and still has the RPM’s (high bounce) that forces the opponent to take it above the shoulder that makes his forehand so devastating. Thanks for the feedback Tony!

    hi guys, thank you, it makes sense what you explain, but yesterday i experienced some trouble with an opponent who shot really very hard and with a lot of spin on my backhand (ball landing near baseline) and i found it extremely difficult to answer to that by taking the ball early. i missed much more shots or i placed them poorly. i still wonder how to answer to those heavy balls i must say, but i will try to do like you show in the video. saludos from germany

    • @Playyourcourt
      @Playyourcourt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for the feedback. Heavy topspin can be tough to take early on any shot but especially on the backhand wing. By chance you have a one hander this can pose an even more difficult situation. Don't worry though, in time with practice it will get easier. The key on the backhand is to make sure you catch it before the ball gets above your shoulder. It's ideal to catch it around the hips for optimal pace and spin potential. Keep grinding out there and let us know how it progresses! Thanks for watching!

    What about foot placement when taking shots on the rise in open stance?

    • @Playyourcourt
      @Playyourcourt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most often we'll find that we're stepping in with the front foot when taking the ball on the rise. You can take it OTR with an open stance as well but it tends to not be as aggressive as a closed stance due to the weight transfer. The main goal on the open stance is to get your outside foot behind the ball. Hope this helps!

    Taking ball early , earlier or half volley , is made a lot more effective if one has a haevy raquet. "Plough Through" ? Could you lads explain and promote the use of the heaviest raquet you cam muster. Its why the pro's look so effortless and why they have one massive forearm !!

    • @Playyourcourt
      @Playyourcourt  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Concur! The plow of a racquet definitely helps taking the ball early. We have a video coming out soon all about the benefits and differences of racquet weight etc. Keep tour 👀 out for it! Thanks for the feedback Dai Kayll.

    • @chtomlin
      @chtomlin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, a reasonably heavy racket if you can swing it well is great, but the reason it would help here is he is just hitting more of a half-volley when he puts his foot up close like that and not a true on the rise groundstroke. This was very thin on the "when" to do this.

      I was taught to change my stance to an open stance for all around better recovery time. Hitting the ball on the rise could be considered a risky shot… but if practiced regularly it’s remarkable to steal that time from someone who’s hitting the ball real high.

      My platform is non existent. Lol. I wasn’t trying to insult although I get your reply.
      That said I have a ton of content that’s hidden. Along my journey I’ve learned that in a more effective coach when I do three things.
      1) Show
      2) Tell
      3) Correct
      I usually demonstrate the technique “sans” words.
      Then I explain how to do it and then I correct it.
      I try to keep my video demos and teaching aids short.
      Here’s the thing, personally I don’t need all the verbiage. Others do. So my technique is to make a short video with bullet point type demo then I offer more for those that need it.
      I enjoy your info. I just don’t want to wait so long for the visual.
      My two cents. Didn’t mean to offend.
