Let's be real here: I don't want to wait weeks for a layer of oil paint to fully dry, so if I want to make something that has lots of colors (with only minor mixing between colors), but is still wet-on-wet one layer (alla prima?), then the inevitable question of "Well how do I prevent unintended mixing of paint, creating mud?" With just that 20 second explanation, you've verified what I wondered, and fixed my whole process. THANK YOU! Now I can more confidently move forward with many projects.

Ok if I am not looking at something I want to paint then ……. I understand the color/value part. Are you saying the layers affect the values?
Seems what your saying is that when it comes to details, do what is in the interest of the painting, or maybe that's the wrong interpretation.
