  • In Italy in the 1930s, sky pirates in biplanes terrorize wealthy cruise ships as they sail the Adriatic Sea. The only pilot brave enough to stop the scourge is the mysterious Porco Rosso (Shuichiro Moriyama), a former World War I flying ace who was somehow turned into a pig during the war. As he prepares to battle the pirate crew's American ace, Porco Rosso enlists the help of spunky girl mechanic Fio Piccolo (Akemi Okamura) and his longtime friend Madame Gina (Tokiko Kato).

This may not have been the fist Ghibli film I saw, but it's easily my favorite by a wide margin.
Despite it not being nearly as fantastical as others, there's something magical about it that just fills me with this strange nostalgia.

In the original japanese instead of ' cute girl, when did you start babysitting?' the line is: 'there's pearls before a swine'. Also when Gina talks to Porco on the phone when she thought he had died she doesn't say: 'I don't want to go to another pilots funeral' - she says: 'One of these days you're going to be roast pork! I don't want that!'. In the dub they missed a couple of crucial comic lines which added to the film...bilingual here.

Porco Rosso really is one of those movies where you completely lose yourself in the story. You're having so much fun with the characters and the gags and the comedy that by the time the sea-place race and knock-out drag out fight happens, you lose any sense of time. I've watched this movie so many times and I almost always get blindsided by how quickly the 3rd act finale arrives because I'm just having the most fun watching Porco and the rest of the characters.

I love porco rosso and firmly believe at no point ever was marco literally a pig man, its entirely a visual metaphor for the audience and a reflection of how marco sees himself. After his disillusionment in the war and failings in his own life he lived as a pig of a man even crossing out his own face in ginas picture of him. But with fio's help and his love for gina, he was finally able to overcome his self-hatred and become a good man again.

I like that and saw it similiarly for many years, but then again, some scenes where people are suprised by him, "show your face" and many other comments in the movie wouldnt make sense. It being some fantasy thing doesnt ruin the methaphor that is still there despite it being also literal or not.

    • @hummus_exual
      @hummus_exual 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

It's made pretty clear people see him as a pig in the movie as well, not just the audience. Otherwise, lines like "the last picture of you as a human" or "Show me your face!" wouldn't really make sense.

I agree with most of your views. However, I think one of the reasons is that he did not want to love Gina. Deep down he loved her. But to her husbands who lost their lives, his best friends, he felt sorry for them. And he feared that if he died, he would cause her grief again, like her husbands.
So he became a pig so that she would not love him and he would not love her.

Basically, Porco has Survivor's guilt, and probably PTSD. he turned into a pig because he doesn't think he deserves to live, and that he's selfish for not dying in the war, when we clearly see how selfless he is, trying to take his friend's place in the hallucination of heaven he saw during the battle.

I've watched this movie in Japanese more times than I can count. Seeing parts of the English dub was fun, and it's always a treat to see new people watch "Porco Rosso" for the first time, and to appreciate the magic and wonder of it as much as you guys did.
As you noted, Miyazaki's love of flying really shines through in this film, as well as his fascination with airplanes and his flair for the fantastical and unexplained. He loved Europe as well, and the attention to detail in the backgrounds and in the animation just adds to all the beauty here.
Of course, the story is just so much fun, and that's why I never get tired of "Porco Rosso". Seeing that most of the humour and dialog was kept intact is encouraging -- it means that even when listening to it in English, folks will hopefully enjoy the movie for the same reasons I do. I noticed that one joke was changed, though. When Ferrari flies by Marco and Fio with the hand-signal messages, in the Japanese version his second one is actually meant for Fio, and Marco passes it on to her. The message: "Don't cast your pearls before swine." 😁
    Keep 'em coming, guys!

If there's anyone who really wants to know if Porco eventually went to meet Gina or not, check the last monologue scene by Fio where her jet is passing by GIna's island (in this movie around 44:06, unfortunately slightly been cut). Zoom and observe the pier right side of the island.

The first time I watched Porco Rosso I wasn't wowed by it like I'd been with other studio Ghibli films. I think it's a bit sneaky-good like that. I've watched it a few times since, and every time its grown on me more and more. I imagine that has a lot to do with my own maturation; any film that can grow with you like that must be something special. If you're looking for another Studio Ghibli film to do next.. perhaps Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind? It's definitely must watch Ghibli and comes with another stellar English speaking cast (which I won't spoil for you lol). Anyway, I'm really enjoying this reaction series and hope there's more to come!

oh, this is a curious change... in the english dub he's Marco Rossellini? Interesting choice, I wonder why... you see in the original he was Marco Pagot. The surname was a homage to Marco Pagot, italian animator and comic-writer who was son of one of the Pagot brothers (Nino and Toni) who were famous pioneers of the comics and animation in Italy. Years earlier their studio had made a italian-japanese coproduction, the animated series Sherlock Hound (yep, a canine version of Baker Street famous detective xD). They had befriended Miyazaki, so when Marco heard he would have made a movie set in the Mediterranean sea, and in some zones of Italy, he sent him books with more info and visual references
Oh also there is a italian dub (we dub 99,9% of everything here xD) and it's very good!
Although I've gotta say, the english dub is really really enjoyable too!

this is the best ghibli movie i loved. Some people would rather become pigs than go against their inner kindness and join in all the filth in the world. And those who love him can see his truthfulness and kindness beneath his pig-like appearance. You know, you will lose something in pursuing any success, especially in this capital world where money is paramount. This is probably Hayao Miyazaki's praise for most ordinary and kind-hearted middle-aged men.

This film hits hard on so many points and it's sad how some people think it's one of the weakest in the Ghibli catalog. Sure, some things don't make sense to us today, like Fio being an engineer at 17 and her love for Marco playing out straight instead of as a teen crush. But the movie had some serious things to say about depression, survivor's guilt and politics.
And the music. The Bygone Days. In Search of the Distant Era. Toki ni wa Mukashi no Hanashi wo. Le Temps Des Cerises.

I might have an explanation for this version of a pilot's afterlife. There was a song by Hans Albers from 1932 (th-cam.com/video/bjjE15ClLgw/w-d-xo.html).
Here is the English translation of the lyrics:
    The Song of the Airmen
From the North Pole to the South Pole
Is just as far as a cat can jump
    We conduct the flight
    In any kind of weather.
We don't hesitate, we get started!
    Whatever may happen,
    The song of the airmen
Will sound through wind and weather:
Airman, give my regards to the sun,
    And to the stars,
    And to the moon.
    Your life means being airborne
    And flying long distances
Crossing vast areas, where nobody lives.
The propeller races faster and faster
Just the way you love it!
For pilots, there is nothing off-limits
So put it at full throttle
    And fly around the world!
Pick up the nicest one of the falling stars
And take it home as a gift for your girl!
    [Choir]:
Airman, give my regards to the sun,
    And to the stars,
    And to the moon.
Airman, give my regards to the sun,
    And to the stars,
    And to the moon.
    Your life means being airborne
    And flying long distances
Crossing vast areas, where nobody lives.
The propeller races faster and faster
Just the way you love it!
For pilots, there is nothing off-limits
So put it at full throttle
    And fly around the world!
    [H. Albers]:
Pick up the nicest one of the falling stars
And take it home as a gift for your girl!
    [Choir]:
Airman, give my regards to the sun,
    And to the stars,

the easy going attitude on air combat is a reference to world war 1. Back then pilots were known as knights of the sky and acting all chivalrous.

Miyazaki Hayao's grandfather was the founder of a company called Miyazaki Aviation Industry, which was a subcontractor for Nakajima Aircraft, the largest aircraft manufacturer in the Orient at the time. His father, Miyazaki Katsuji, was an aeronautical engineer, so Miyazaki Hayao's love of airplanes is in his DNA. ✨😌
The origin of Ghibli comes from the name of Miyazaki Hayao's favorite Italian airplane, which means "hot air" in Italian.

I think I have to disagree respectfully, I was looking for one other person to mention this in the comments but no one did so maybe it's just me. I didn't love a lot of the stuff they did with Fio and the other women, like the sexist comments about women shouldn't be building planes, the weird borderline romance thing between Fio (who is 17) and Porco/Curtis who are grown men, the way she was objectified and used as a prize for the competition, and there was one particularly awful line of dialogue when she's trying to persuade Porco to let her help with the plane and she asks if he says no because of her age or gender; he says both, and she responds that she "can't help her gender" and instead justifies age, when it should be the other way around! I mean yes she can't control her gender but she literally apologized for being a woman. Idk, it could've all been a lot worse, but but I would really hesitate to call this feminist because there was never any follow up with any of these instances about how they were sexist and wrong.

Hey guys, the semi-villian) Curtis here is supposed to be Glen Curtiss (1878-1930) the Aviation pioneer and aircraft manufacturer (Curtiss Aircraft/Curtiss-Wright Engines). He was rumored to have a sketchy rep business-wise, and fought a 10-year "Patent War" with the Wright Bros.

Love this movie, second only to Kikki's Delivery Service. I particularly love the ending. Third and fourth film I love especially is "Only Yesterday"and "Whisper of the Heart" both from a time before Ghibli lost its way. Just a pity you watched the English dub instead to the original Japanese.the English dubs are so bland

Japanese bilingual here. It's definitely pronounced ji-blee. In the logo it's embedded in the japanese phonetic characters. Miyazaki acknowledged that the word was not pronounced like in the original language (which i think was arabic) in an interview, but that the studio name is set now. No one in Japan will know what you're talking about if you say it with a hard g.

Homies, unrelated question...I know you guys are supporting the SAG-AFTRA strike and not posting any new content from struck properties. Does this mean you're simply not filming any content from new shows/movies that have come out since the start of the strike, or are you still filming the reactions and have a "backlog" that you will eventually post once the strike is over (even if those shows/movies may be long in the past)?

Oh, I did not know about Michael Keaton voicing the English dub as I've only seen this in Japanese and Korean. Keaton does an awesome job, although it's a bit sad how subtle Japanese jokes got buried in the translation. Like, in the scene on 25:26 when the other pilot is signing Porco Rosso, he's really saying "pearls before swine" or something along that line.

I want everyone to see Laputa: Castle in the Sky.
All the characters are full of love (except Musca) and I consider this film to be Ghibli's masterpiece.
To put it bluntly, if you don't like Castle in the Sky, I suggest you don't watch any of Ghibli's works.

Being bilingual it's always funny to see the differences in translation. In the German Dub nobody has an accent. They all speak normal. Interesting American choice to give some people accents and others not.

Nah, let films like this remain untouched by "3d remakes". The creative industry atm lacks the ability to faithhfully recreate greats, especially western ones that fail to identify or outright deny narrative nuance. Also Ghibli's last venture into 3D animation was... disturbing.
