My favourite Drinker moment was when he was naming his favourite *recent* *Japanese* movies: Oldboy (2003, Korean) and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000, Chinese).

Old Boy is at least based on a Japanese manga and exists in the shared cultural space of Japan & Korea, as the two countries do have a lot of the same problems that show up in their media. Before I started learning Japanese and really paying attention to Japanese media, I thought it was Japanese... and it still feels very Japanese in a lot of ways, such as the big reveal that makes things creepy is something that pops up in more of the Japanese media I've read/seen, while I've yet to encounter it in any other Korean media (I've only recently started indulging)
Absolutely zero excuse for Crouching Tiger. While China was very influential in the region and aspects of their culture show up in Japan, the two cultures are so distinct I don't think I've ever confused the two, not eve when I was a kid in the 70s.

I unsubscribed from Critical Drinker 3 years ago after 2 month watching his mind rot.
I miss just being able to say “I didn’t really get into this movie” or “The messaging was really on the nose, so it didn’t click for me.”
Not drawn out vids about how miserable apparently every movie coming out these days is. It’s just endless griping, looking for every tiny nitpick to somehow stick it to the other side of the culture war.
Sometimes he doesn’t even watch the stuff he’s complaining about, like The Boys. I don’t personally enjoy The Boys, but I’m not going to go on a full video rant about how it apparently sucks now without even watching the damn show.
I miss when film criticism was fun. Arguing about whether a movie sucked or not used to be fun. Now it’s just mind numbing. And for what? People vote with their wallets, naturally. So unless people just up and stop watching movies that clearly advertise themselves with Drinker’s dreaded “The Message”, it shows that there’s still an audience for the films he and his compatriots loathe so much.
The thing that’s crazy about his Peter B Parker’s complaints is that across the spider verse is one of the only pieces of media where Peter Parker actually has a good life, gets MJ, has and child and finally settles down but that’s apparently a bad thing. Also Peter B Parker’s Spider-Man was the only one out of hundreds of spider people to easily catch miles and slow him down when everyone failed
but he didn't rag-dolled miles...and that hurts certain sensibilities

3:43... yes, seeing the man who was depressed because he fears losing his loved ones to the point where he sacrifices his happiness, to then gather up the courage to live with those choices, to turn out to be a very happy an affectionate dad, which he didn't think he would be able to be, is belittling Peter Parker and making fun of him... maybe to someone with no media literacy or a grift to sell

I am so glad you made this. I stumbled across his channel a while back and listened to one or two old vids of his and thought "oh this guy is very ironic and very funny" then I watched two more and realised "this guy is very serious and very unfunny".

I decided to watch the recent Tomb Raider series on Netflix, shockingly I thoroughly enjoyed. They all hated it of course, apparently there was a lesbian undertone going on in it that wasn't there when I watched it.
What else have they made me miss out on?
You can tell he didn't play the 2013-2018 games. Otherwise he would know Sam is Lara kinda sort of love interest, not her cousin. The guy just repeats "woke", and "DEI" on repeat and watching the views role in.
I won't lie, when I first found the Critical Drinker, he was reviewing media and critiquing things that I myself did not enjoy and I agreed with a couple of his sentiments. Then I went on to look at all the content he released and I realized this was not a place for me and I unfollowed. It was too late, the TH-cam Almighty Algorithm to this day tries to send me his videos even when I've asked it to stop
I stopped watching him by 2022. I liked his critiques of modern film trends because he explained his gripes and offered sensible suggestions. But I started noticing that his reviews of new movies felt forced and formulaic. His insight and wit regarding storytelling and character conventions were replaced with reaching, nitpicking, rage bait, playing dumb and just straight-up lying. Like he was afraid that if he actually admitted to liking something and didn't hit this specific list of buzzwords and complaints, his audience would turn on him.
He used to do actual critical analysis before he sacrificed his integrity in favor of playing a caricature for money. Dude turned into a worse version of Cinema Sins.
I agree. I used to watch him too, but then he started calling everything woke and got really angry at The Little Mermaid for some reason. Like dude, it's a kid's movie, you aren't the target audience. At that point I pressed the 'Don't Recommend Channel' button.
I began to notice this too, he would point out things that were easily passed over in the movie and turn them into a central pillar of his video "critique". or try to insinuate that the casting was weighted/did poorly when you could tell they were doing a great job in their roles.
I cant remember seeing any videos that *praised* a movie either, though I may have skipped them
I accidentally watched one of his videos. It was about Wicked. He had a point about the actress coming across a little egotistical, but threw the r slur around and all his examples of similar people, who came across as egoistical and stuff were women. I took one look at my recommendations and it was all 'woke' this and 'woke' that and realized I accidentally stepped into the bad part of youtube, filled with the kind of misogynistic incels who comment the most atrocious shit on reddit videos and somehow always find a way to blame the woman for anything that happens in those stories. I accidentally walked into their den.
i had no idea about all this tbh, i blocked critical drinker from my youtube suggestions a long time ago simply for being a negativity baiting bore who just feeds of "everything new sucks" toxic energy. turns out he was far worse than i realised.
Driniker complains about Batman villains being white men, imagine his complaints if Joker or Riddler had been race or gender swapped. Grifters just always find a way to make it about race/gender no matter how faithful it is to the source material.

I used to hate-watch him but I quit entirely after his *The Boys* S4 “review.” This man literally admitted he hadn’t watched a single episode and went on a preachy rant after reading off Rotten Tomatoes reviews
I was the one who found out about him changing the HOTD title after the premiere broke viewers records. Still got the tweet from when I called him out on it too lol. Good to see it's being spread throughout the internet as an example of criticals grifting behavior.

There's been a pretty noticeable uptick of grift exposes over the past few weeks, and I'm 100% here for it.
I made the mistake of watching a singular critical drinker video once on a movie called "Annihilation" a film which I genuinely like. He literally spent almost the entire time complaining that it starred a woman and that's it. The rest was him complaining that stuff didn't make sense that was explained in the movie. Thoroughly convinced me to never watch him again.

A coworker was trying to troll me with this, being an animal lover, and pointed out a bunch of stuff about PETA. I noted I don't like them either, but corrected him on a few things. He dug down to the point where I said "stop making me defend PETA". Then I said that every time he tried to argue about nonsense. Sometimes you have to troll the trolls.
I've noticed this a lot with grifter youtubers. Is that when they start their channels, they make some genuinely fun and entertaining videos. Then they gain shit tons of fame and turn their channels into echo chambers and their content suffers for it.

21:40 If there's one thing I'll defend the Drinker here is shitting one PETA, there have been countless incidents of euthanizing animals who did not need to be put down. Their protests are some next level gruesome, even going as far as to make a detailed comic book called "My Mommy Kills Animals" and give these to children coming out of the mall if their mothers were wearing fur, real or not. That isn't their worst protest in my opinion, but it's a pretty damn good one to show what they will do to even attempt to get people on their side.

8:05 it's funny that he's mad about the Kong thing. A lot of more recent adaptations of the story have been more sympathetic towards Kong and used as lenses to look at things like colonialism and the triangle trade. He's mad that it's there but like does he not want subtext in films does he not want genre films to discuss and explore real world issues? As somebody who enjoys genre films it gets kinda frustrating when people say they want it taken seriously out of one side of their mouth but deny any attempt to analyze or communicate deeper themes out the other.
That said we kinda know why in this case. He nor his audience want to acknowledge the things being discussed subtextually

I remember watching the Drinker pivot into the clearly very profitable right wing grifter verse in real time. It was when he really stated top lean into his 'THE MESSAGE' meme that I completely checked out and never went back. The guy is the worst most cynical kind of reactionary internet hack.
There is more truth in this 25 minute video than 'the drinker's' entire back catalogue. He should probably lay off the drink, it's going to his head.

I watched a few of his videos a while ago and his entire vibe was just so off-putting. I almost never felt like he was actually looking at the films on their own merits or looking at a situation objectively. Like, there are few creators where I can feel the braincells leaving my head as I listen to them, but this guy is one of them.

Came across critical drinker's content a few years ago. After watching a few videos, he came across as a bad faith critic. I wasn't even aware of America's culture wars back then. Stopped watching his videos
Remember when Jeremy from GnG got annoyed in the live chat that they never talk about stuff they like, and Ryan and Nerd got angry and said no, they don't want to talk about good stuff. Jeremy even called them out with blowing stuff out of proportion for the sake of vids lol
Another person who is definitely a grifter is someone known as Jesse Grant, he constantly posts these videos with rather absurd claims that can easily get debunked with the slightest bit of research. Not to mention that he is an ardent defender of the Critical Drinker.

The “a fucking Nazi” line with the quite i just found hilarious
The hardest part about watching this video was stomaching the critical drinker clips.
I think Cody Johnson summed it pretty well when describing right-wing grifters like Ben Shapiro. "Are you stupid, or are you lying, or are you both?"
I used to like critical drinker because he made fun of things I already didn't like, but got bored of him because he became repetitive, and started to notice he was just flat out making things up, or intentionally misrepresenting things. Also backtracking on positions when he found the majority actually likes whatever he's complaining about
what I hate the most is the fact that he lies so much in his reviews, when you're reviewing you have a responsability to be honest of what happens in the movie because people will take your word for it and will decide whether to go see the movie depending on your opinion and you could hurt the movie's performance by lying. The worst part is that when defending him most people just say "nu-uh", honestly, thank god that his own fanbase called him out on his video of the boys season 4, makes regain faith in humanity
I'll say for the minecraft shot, I was disappointed not because of kids, or the black woman, or momoa in a pink jacket, but that any of them were live action because it just clashes really bad to me.
That said, I'm thrilled to see this video because I was just Introduced to the critical drinker a few days ago and couldn't understand why anyone thought he wasn't a clown lol
Whenever he does a review on a film he likes, he literally just recounts what happens in the film from start to finish which is a hilarious excuse for an "in-depth analysis/review".
His review of Alex Garland's Annihilation tells you everything you need to know. Anything that isn't mainstream and 100% on the nose and doesn't hold your hand the entire time is too much for him to handle as "film critic".
And about the spiderverse.... It's a spiderverse! Of course it has a diverse cast! It's a freaking multiverse!! You will see so many different spidermans, a plushie, a car, and a lego. Tbf I think this would be really interesting @Th3Birdman. Would you go in a podcast like Open Bar or EFAP your criticisms to drinker and debate him? The group has been very welcoming of differing opinions and they tend to keep things cordial, respectful and even lighthearted when they can.
