I purchased the suave shampoo after I saw Courtney was using it and it has the new formula. My hair is low-density, low-porosity, coarse (Asian), oily and dandruffy, prone to build-up and I have 2b-3a textures. I clarify with this shampoo probably bi-monthly, maybe three times if I feel like my scalp has build-up. This shampoo makes my hair feel very squeaky and definitely strips anything that's leftover from previous wash days, but if I deep condition and use moisturizing products as my stylers I don't have a problem with it. I understand why people want to stay away from stripping shampoos, but if you are only using the product once or twice a month and you're nourishing your hair all the time anyway, I really don't think it will cause issues. Just like having a very healthy diet will not be destroyed by treating yourself to something sweet every once in awhile.
@@SwavyCurlyCourtneyI just purchased the clarifying shampoo today haven’t use it yet I’m looking at the ingredients and it’s the new ingredients not the old one 😢…….
Just a recommendation! Swave resently came out with a curl cream, shampoo and conditioner! It surprisingly worked with my wavy hair and it so affordable! I also use their achocol free gel! My hair feels so soft and shiny! And I only spent about 15.00 to 20.00 total on my hair!
I'm all for an inexpensive hair routine! Do you remember the name of the shampoo and conditioner? When I look up 'curl cream' I find a Suave Professionals Curl Cream, it's a gold/bronze colored bottle. Is that the one you're talking about? Also where did you find it/buy it from?
@@purplefairies06 Me too! Especially since I'm on a super tight budget! They have a clarifying shampoo and shea butter conditioner. Try walmart or I'm sure you could order it over the internet! I hope you can find it!
Bought the new formula suave sun-ripened strawberry energizing shampoo (same ingredients as the clarifying shampoo - just different scent). Tried it on my daughter and me (2b/2c). Very squeaky clean. We were just fine after deep conditioning and styling. I’m happy with its performance and price!
I've discovered my hair doesn't like aloe, glycerin AND cocamidopropyl betaine (derived from coconut oil). So I'm posting the products I've been able to find in case I have fellow wavies suffering from this problem. Let's hope this is a transition problem and not permanent! As these 3 ingredients are in almost EVERYTHING, it's been very difficult to find good products. Unfortunately, all the shampoos Courtney recommends as alternatives have at least one of these ingredients. And as I'm in the UK, Suave costs the equivalent of $30 to buy, if you can manage to track it down :) For anyone else in the UK looking for aloe-free, glycerin-free and coconut oil-free clarifying shampoos, I recommend Faith In Nature, specifically their Tea Tree, Seaweed and Citrus, and Jojoba Shampoos. They all contain Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, which I find works well without being too stripping. I'm not sure if Faith in Nature is available in the US, but it's an excellent, eco-friendly brand. For US and UK audiences, so far the only conditioner I've found that are suitable for wavy hair that don't have glycerin, aloe, or cocomidopropyl betaine is Kinky Curly's Knot Today. As a sulfate-free shampoo, Kinky Curly's Come Clean doesn't have glycerin or aloe, though it DOES have cocomidopropyl betaine. Likewise, Jessicurl's Gentle Lather misses out glycerin and aloe but does have cocomidopropyl betaine. And finally, Jessicurl's Spiralicious Gel doesn't have any of these three troublesome ingredients. The search goes on...
I was hopeful at the end of this, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be any different yet. I just checked mine (purchased within the last month) and it's the new formula shown in this video 🙄
I really HATE the new formula. it has this almost floral scent to it when it used to have what i would call a "fresh" scent to it. the new formula makes my hair feel this weird combo of dry and sticky and i hate it. i'd say my hair is thick and more wavy than curly btw. i hope they bring the old formula back.
I can see that you are feeling much better! (must be the medic in me) Since I am getting into swimming again, Chlorine and such. Could you look into the Malibu C Swimmers Wellness shampoo and conditioner? Your Chem Major eye is outstanding!
I didn't see this video until just now (and new nothing of your original advice about this product). If you recall (I can't really expect you to), I'm new to the whole curly thing, so I'm trying to learn from you. I never used much product and never really paid attention to the condition of my hair in the past (I figured since I was stuck at home and had no job, I didn't deserve nice hair), so I never before needed clarifying (until I recently finger detangled my hair and my hands felt gunky). Not having seen this video, I got the Suave Clarifying shampoo and used it for the first time last night. Not knowing what my hair's SUPPOSED to be like, I had no problem with it. It smells great. I also didn't know you were supposed to deep condition after, so I just used my regular one with no stylers because, silly me, I figured it would defeat the purpose of clarifying. Anyway, my hair air-dried rather wonky, so I brushed it out and now it's very silky, which is kinda nice. How can I tell if this was good for my hair or not?
Bought the old formula Sauve clarifying shampoo in May when I started CGM. In June, my husband knocked it off the counter and the cap broke and half of it leaked out before I saw it on the floor. Ughhhhh. Glad they are bringing back the old formula. Yay!
Ooh, your statement that not all clarifiers are chelating, but all chelating shampoos are clarifying was super helpful! I have very hard water and own both the Suave and the Ion shampoos you mentioned. Now I know that I will only have to repurchase the Ion to do both jobs at once. Good to know! Thanks!
I have for years & years used Neutrogena anti residual clarifying shampoo with phenomenal results. My hair would be bouncy & shiny. I noticed in many videos that you highly recommended Suave Daily Clarifying shampoo, so I bought it. I used it for about a month before I realized that it was the culprit in turning my hair dry, brittle & giving me split ends. It was the only item different in my routine. I was like this is super stripping, I'm surprised she loves it so much. Then I saw this video & noticed they have a new formula. I have always wondered why companies decide to mess w/ a good product. I have lost many a favorite shampoo and conditioner due to "improved" formulary changes. Then it takes trying many, many other products & quite a bit of $$ before you find one that you like. I'm going to stick w/ my Neutrogena & not give Suave a second chance. I'm still trying to rescue it from all the stripping it did.
I just bought this because I just started the curly girl method and watched an old video. My hair is 2a-2c I'm 63 and color my long 75% grey 25% brown hair light blonde, and straightened with irons and dryers and brushes forever. Whew! Anyway I used the new formula (?) and I found my hair clean and not dry. I thought my hair looked pretty good using my Cantu products after it. 🤷 Just checked my bottle it's got water, sodium pareth(?) sulfate. Sorry I had a hard time reading the small print. ❤️
I just started the CGM and bought this product after seeing other wavies recommending this and I guess I have the new formula, but already plan on using this as infrequently as possible. I used it as my final rinse a few days ago and I did notice it was super stripping and left my hair squeaky and dry feeling. But I followed with a deep conditioning masque and my hair doesn't seem any different than before I started, so hopefully my hair is ok with it.
I think the new formula has been around awhile. I purchased mine well before the pandemic and it's the new formula, so it's been at least 6 months. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I had no idea that I had a more drying formula. Now the hunt begins for the Sodium Laureth Sulfate version.
Just a heads-up! The Captivating Curls Mousse has also been reformulated!! 😥😭 why do they keep doing these things to us?!? Great video as always, Courtney! Xo
I recently discovered suave tea tree and hemp seed oil revitalizing shampoo which has the sodium laureth sulfate surfactant like the old daily clarifying formula. It seems to do a decent job without being overly drying (maybe because of the tea tree and hemp seed oils?)
I literally clarified with this (old formula) yesterday before deep conditioning! I bought a giant container about 8months ago on your recommendation, so I have a few months left of infrequent use with this bottle. Such a good price point, too. What a bummer! I have virgin, low po, medium/high density hair ranging from 2A-3A.
I have actually used the Neutragena anti residue after swimming and a day at the beach and it works and also love the Ion shampoo too. Yes both options do need a deep conditioning treatment afterwards
I just bought this one, and the matching conditioner, never have I ever clarified my hair once I think the salon did, but I haven’t. Thanks for the upload! Also I am a new subscriber on both my channels!
Oh no I literally just bought this. I'll try it and see. It was only $1.50. I used to use that neutrogena one, but Walmart didn't have it the last time I checked (we're still only doing pick up orders at stores because I'm very vulnerable to covid so I can't go into Walgreens or somewhere to pick it up). My hair isn't dry so hopefully using the new Suave once in a while won't matter. And hopefully I'm not allergic to it at all.
I have the new formula and it is less stripping on my hair than the old one. So weird! I like it SO MUCH better. The old one left my hair super squeaky clean and this one this one my waves still felt soft.
The Shave clarifying in the blue for normal to oily hair is the greatest Gold Standard for slippery greasy stringy hair. It has been Gold Standard from tons of esteemed reviews Feels so great afterwards and fluffy full of body. I also get cystic acne acne in scalp. I also exfoliate regularly.
I came across this video cause I just opened a new bottle with the changed formula. my main issue is the added, intense fragrance. now I'm on a rush to find a replacement, fragrance free option
I have the old version and was going to buy another bottle. Glad you mentioned this and will check the ingredients before purchasing. I’m glad I had bought a large bottle a few months ago. Took a pic of the back of the bottle to compare. Glad they’re switching back 🤗
Dang it, I bought this for myself based on your recommendation and used it as my clarifying shampoo, BUT my fiance started to use it (because it's super cheap and he is more utilitarian) and it helps with his scalp concerns
Great video, super informative (and so glad to hear Suave is going back to the old formula). And I LOVE the bloopers at the end!!! lol Love how real and "so you" you are. :)
Courtney you are a wealth of useful information girl! I cannot thank you enough for taking your time to do the research for us!! I'm on the hunt for the original formula! Oh, and the beautiful t-shirt I bought from you a few months ago is my absolute favorite! Where in the world did you find cotton that darn soft! Love your channel, your the best. 🥰
I've been looking for Suave's switched back to the old formula for several months, haven't seen it yet. I've also been looking at a number of clarifying shampoos and it seems like it's hard to find clarifying shampoos with sodium laurel sulfate.
Is Sauve also going to provide a Daily Clarifying 'fragrance free' version that they used to make a few years ago? My wife loved the 'old' formula. There are many comments on the company web site complaining about the horrible 24 hour fragrance that Suave Shampoos have now. They do not offer any fragrance free options.
I will never understand why companies go in and jack around with a formula that people love! If it’s working, why mess with it? Just stop! 😂 All that does is make me go buy a product from a different company! 🤷♀️
This makes sense! I just discovered your channel a bit over a week ago. When I went to walmart to pick this up, I did check the ingredients and I was so confused because it wasn't what you said. I'm so glad they're changing back! I'd love to give it a try
I wish I saw this earlier! I picked up the new formula a week or two ago and didn't know there was a change. Definitely noticed how dry my hair was after, not sure if it would be similar or less drying with the old formula. I have pretty thick, dry hair.
I bought the Suave Shampoo with the new formula because you and other TH-camrs were reccomndimg it. It was very drying and made my hair squeaky clean. I used it once on my color-treated hair and it made my color fade so much. Completely regret buying and using it.
Wow! I just looked at my only bottle which was my first bottle. I purchased it maybe four months ago and it’s the new formulation. So I’ve never tried the old formulation
Okay, my hair is 3c and this was my go to for years too. I noticed the change in my hair too. But I went moved from CT to AZ. So I thought it was the climate that was the factor. Could be both though.
I enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for information. I looked on my bottle of Suave and I have been clarifying with the new formula. That's why my hair as been dry. That bottle going right in the trash. Thx again. I think your hair came out great.
Oh my goodness! I purchases this shampoo a few months ago and just looked at the ingredients, I have the new formula. I have super oily hair and only used this a few times. I don't think its too stripping but I only use this about once a month to clarify.
I used this without realizing that it was the new formula and it made my hair feel like actual straw. And I deep conditioned twice after- to no luck. Took me a week to get back to normal :/
Hm, I have checked my bottles and I see that I have both versions. My 30oz bottle has the original formula and I have a 15oz bottle with the new formula. I’d bought the smaller oz at CVS and the 30oz at the neighborhood drugstore by where I work in Manhattan.
So glad I seen this before going to the store. I ran out of my quantum clarifying shampoo and just don't feel like running to Sally's and was going to go to my local store in town and pick up sauve but after watching this I guess I'll be going to Sally's after all. Thank you for this info.
Interesting. I recently bought this because a lot of people recommended it and apparently I have the new formula. I've only used it twice before so I haven't really noticed much yet. Oh well, if it turns out it's not working for me maybe my husband will like it.
Any tips for getting super weird “transition” hair? Even though I’m following all of your tips, the top layer of my hair is drying straight while the under layers are clumping at 2b even 2c while wet but drying (even with gel and diffusing) as 2a
Thank you for this! I think my hair is like yours. I’ve been using the Suave for years, and I really like the neutrogena one as well. I had no clue the formula changed on the Suave.
Thank you so much for this! I'd used it for years, but hadn't bought it in a few as I was using B&B for a bit. I bought this again recently, and my hair color faded SO MUCH! That had never happened before, and I couldn't figure out why, until I saw this video! Trying to find a good substitute! B&B Sunday Shamnpoo is not recommended for dyed hair, and kinky curly come clean broke me out. Argh! I'm going to look into the others you recommend!
I have the old formula. I saw the suave clarifying shampoo on the clearance shelf at Target a few months ago and thought it was strange. Now I know why.
I bought some when I first started around the time of the start of the pandemic. As a newbie I didn’t know what I was looking for just what others were saying. Just looked last night and I have the new formula! Not knowing the difference I have learned to work with it. I put conditioner on my ends so they don’t feel like straw and put the shampoo on my roots. It works for now but I want to try the old formula!
I know that manes by Mell recommends a chelating shampoo that is sulfate free. So if you have hard water and are strict cgm followers then I would recommend going straight for a chelating shampoo and not just a clarifying shampoo. One product that does both.
I just bought the Suave a couple of weeks ago on your recommendation. I just checked my bottle and it is the new formula 🙁 I'll have to check out some of the others you recommended
I just started the CG method this week and picked up a bottle of the suave daily clarifying shampoo. It looks like they did switch back to the old formula because that's what I purchased :)
@@misslittleamerika I was just saying I wasn't trying to be rude I'm sorry I came across that way. Thanks for letting me know that it's the first step in the CGM.
I use suave due to my family being somewhat in a tough spot but the way I use it is I shampoo as normal and then condition scrunching up leave it alone for a bit than wash it off then apply a baby amount of it like a leave in. If I have to use a hair growth treatment then in JBC oil to the rescue more specifically the one with vitamin A D and E then distribute it through my scalp and add a soaring amount to the ends sleep and in the morning it looks good as new
FYI y’all. I bought the Suave I have in early June and guess what? New formula. I had no idea. So the new formula has been out there for at least 3 months. I thought i was safe bc mine wasn’t a recent purchase, but no.
Oh no, I better check my bottle I have. I also was the Sauve coconut conditioner and LOVED it, well as it turns out, I am one of those people are sensitive to METHYLCHLOROISOTHIAZOLINONE, METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE. I do miss it, but I think scratching my scalp to shreds is probably not the best thing.
I use Edenworks Peppermint Tea Tree Shampoo for clarifying. Now...back in the day when I had shorter hair (before CGM), I used this Suave every.single.day. because I had some seriously greasy hair. LOL. But I can’t use it now-not even for clarifying. It’s cheap, which is good, but it’s just way too drying for me now. Thus, Edenworks.
Agree! I really like it, but it's definitely a squeaky clean when I use it, for those who avoid that type of cleanser. A little pricey, but then again, i keep buying it, so I guess it's worth it to me!
Searched through comments for this, it's my CGM choice. Also want to get MalibuC hard water shampoo to try preserving my gentle color, as reccd by holistic enchilada
Ugh, I just decided to try the curly girl method (loosely) and bought the suave at your recommendation... all the store had was a big 30 oz bottle and guess what?! It turns out it’s the new ingredients. Not sure if I should try it now or go get neutrogena instead. I’m planning on clarifying and starting my journey on Sunday (in two days).
Oh wow........I JUST went and bought that Fructis shampoo and conditioner! AND I just washed with the Suave today! I think it’s the old formula though.... Well then!
Currently irritated because I’m coming back and watching this video six months later. I just bought this clarifying shampoo off of Amazon because since she said at the end of this video they are switching back to the old formula, and this video was posted six months ago, I would assume that they would have switched back to the old formula by now. On Amazon they showed a picture of the ingredients and it is the old formula that she is recommending. I just received it in the mail and checked the bottle, and it is the new crappy formula. Kind of irritated because the pictures on Amazon not only lied to me but you think that in six months they would’ve changed back the formula after they said they would have. Not too upset though because it’s pretty cheap product
The 2 main clarifying shampoos I have are the Suave (huge bottle of the old formula) and the ION Hard Water Shampoo. I guess I am pretty much covered. What do you think of the Carol's Daughter Wash Day Delight? Have you tried it? I was wondering where it fell in the "clarifying" rankings.

Just bought this based on your recommendation. No idea yet which version, but not going to worry. I use it infrequently and deep condition after.
So glad I found this! I will double check the ingredients before I buy now :)
I have the old version and was going to buy another bottle. Glad you mentioned this and will check the ingredients before purchasing. I’m glad I had bought a large bottle a few months ago. Took a pic of the back of the bottle to compare. Glad they’re switching back 🤗
My bottle has some kind of in-between formula! The ingredients are: water, sodium laureth sulfate, cocamide mea, ammonium chloride, fragrance, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, tetrasodium edta, dmdm hydantoin, citric acid, propylene glycol, tocopheryl acetate, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, ppg-9, blue 1, red 33.
Omg yay! The neutragena one was the one I picked up!!! I’m clearly absorbing your hair knowledge!!! Thank you!!!
We don't have Suave in Canada, so now I don't have to feel bad about not being able to buy it.
Wow! I just looked at my only bottle which was my first bottle. I purchased it maybe four months ago and it’s the new formulation. So I’ve never tried the old formulation
Ahhh I have the new formula. I totally noticed how drying it made my hair feel!!
Even though I’m following all of your tips, the top layer of my hair is drying straight while the under layers are clumping at 2b even 2c while wet but drying (even with gel and diffusing) as 2a
This same thing happens to me but I have a few waves at the top of my head which looks super weird
you probably have triangle shape hair!! search it up on yt and you should be able to find out how to get rid of it
Mine is the same way! I pin curl the top. ❤️
Thank you for this! I think my hair is like yours. I’ve been using the Suave for years, and I really like the neutrogena one as well. I had no clue the formula changed on the Suave.
I Iike the new suave have no problems with it. I like the squeaky clean feeling.
Thank you for making this video! I was about to buy this at Walmart, but they have the new formula. Guess I'm going to have to order online!
Thank you, Courtney! Hope you're feeling better every day. 😊
I'm newly subscribed to you and was going to go out and buy the sauve today! Good thing my notifications are turned on!! :)
I still have a big bottle of the old one. I'll have to use it sparingly 😭
I've used the Ion Hardwater Clarifying shampoo for a while.
I just bought the Suave a couple of weeks ago on your recommendation. I just checked my bottle and it is the new formula 🙁 I'll have to check out some of the others you recommended
I love the suave product in the green bottle
I love how you do your makeup. I would appreciate a tutorial sometime if you’re willing. ❤️
I just started the CG method this week and picked up a bottle of the suave daily clarifying shampoo. It looks like they did switch back to the old formula because that's what I purchased :)
You're not really doing the curly girl method if you're using suave to clarify your hair because it has sulfates in it.
@@sadieadler4383 yes I am, clarifying is literally the first step. Also mind your own business lol
The Garnier Fructis Pure Clean + Aloe is made with Laureth Sulfate
I bought that one also. Idk if that’s good or bad honestly.
Unfortunately, it seems as if they kept the new formula. I checked the label on the Target app and it's the new formula.
Ugh! That would have been nice if it changed! Unfortunately, it has been like that for a while!
V05 shampoo and Re-fresh shampoo at Walmart has sodium laurethsulfate
I use Edenworks Peppermint Tea Tree Shampoo for clarifying. Now...back in the day when I had shorter hair (before CGM), I used this Suave every.single.day. because I had some seriously greasy hair. LOL. But I can’t use it now-not even for clarifying. It’s cheap, which is good, but it’s just way too drying for me now. Thus, Edenworks.
Thanks so much for great reviews ☺️🙏❤️
Thank you so much! 😀
What about the kinky curly come clean for a clarifyer?
That's awesome they are switching it back though
Yes!! I love that kinky curly shampoo! I turn to it every time I wanna clarify!
Agree! I really like it, but it's definitely a squeaky clean when I use it, for those who avoid that type of cleanser. A little pricey, but then again, i keep buying it, so I guess it's worth it to me!
Yes buy pricey for me 😁
Searched through comments for this, it's my CGM choice.
You are my hair chemistry guru! You do an excellent job of explaining things. Thank you so much!
I love Trader Joes Tree Tea Shampoo as a clarifying shampoo. It is only $4 at Trader Joes and is curly girl approved.
What about the most basic VO5? I also have found a cheapie clear one named Flex in Dollar General that works well.
Sodium C12-13 Pareth Sulfate is also used in the Tresemme curl hydrate shampoo - the regular - not pro version.
Also - target now sells orginal formula.
So that’s why it stripped my hair so much. And here I thought I found a good find at Dollar Tree. 🙄🤔
