I make raw freeze dried dog food and have been doing this for almost 10 years now. Some of the ingredients I use is: uncooked, ground beef, turkey & chicken. I will also put in some but not always the origins. I like to keep mixing it up. I also use my meat grinder and do whole chicken and other meats with the bone in, the bones are good for them. I also use brown rice and brown rice only. I use hard boiled eggs, ground up with the shell as your dog needs the calcium and can digest it without any problems. Remember they have very different enzymes and the enzymes to break down and digest properly. Not always do I put fruit or vegetables in, any of the different combos I make. I like to mix it up the recipes for them. It’s really not necessary for them to have that much fruit & veggies, some is beneficial but not a lot. I keep everything raw as you will loose and kill off the nutritional value(s)and all the other components your dog will need. I really spoil my dogs, we have 3. I also like to use DINOVITE in my recipe(s) it gives you the peace of mind and insures that your dog is getting everything they naturally need. It sure amps up your dog food as well as your dogs health, coat, skin, mind and just overall everything. The dogs look great and do not look their ages nor act their age. Our Vet is pretty impressed by what they see in our dogs and we do not see him /the vet very often, which is great as they are expensive! Usually for update the shots. I couldn’t be more pleased with how we feed and what we give our dogs.
I know this comment was made a long time ago, but I have a question. You said you use whole chicken with the bone, which I agree is good for the dogs, but do you freeze dry the chicken with bone in?
One more thing, you could freeze dry it raw and preserve the enzymes and nutrients that cooking removes. Just a thought. Making your own is better than commercial dog food by far tho! Bravo to you to think outside the box of kibble!!!

I've made my own dog food and he knew I was making it and I would serve him a hot bowl and he would bark at it till it cooled down a little, I just got my freeze dryer today, didn't get to freeze dry it before but now I'm going to! This is great! I love your channel more and more, our pets deserve to eat healthy too
Use frozen corn. It's already frozen and will FD faster. Plus, if it's frozen when picked fresh, it will actually have more nutrients than your "fresh" corn which is actually 5 to 7 days old at the store.
Watch canned foods...too much sodium... Note peas, lentils and sweet potatoes should not be fed each meal non stop...cardio issues found in study >2 years ago.. So happy to have found your videos first!
I have been making dog food for our 7 dogs plus 2 for years. I add frozen blueberries. I add an organic multivitamin and mobility powder. It contains omega 3. I use string beans a lot. I watched Dr. Marty the Vet video. See what he says about his freeze dried dog food. I was making it all in two Instapots and freezing. It lasts 2 weeks for 7 small dogs but have been switching to freeze drying to save the nutrients.
We started making our own freeze dried dog food this year. We stopped using our VitaMix for mixing and switched to using a kitchenaid food processor. We also put our mixture into a pastry bag and loaded out trays using the pastry bag making log shaped strips onto the trays. We found this reduces drying times. Our recipe is similar to yours.
I have made dog food numerous times. We have 4 dogs, so we split it with purchased dog food once a day. I ordered a 50# bag of dried peas. So I save a lot of $ there. I also save certain scraps to add in. I also pulverize the egg shells and use them (calcium). There are things you can do to bring the $ down but yes, A LOT OF WORK!!
How much water do you add to reconstitute a 16oz bag? Also, are the Mylar bags expensive or can you reuse them? Could you store the dried food in freezer plastic bags instead since it’s only for a month or two?
I have two 100+ lbs Rottweilers. We make about 90 lb batches. It is a 2 day project! We use beef, chicken, black beans that I soak over night/cook. I add frozen veggies (peas and carrots). To make it bind a bit we add oatmeal. They preferred the oatmeal over rice. It is so much work but they love it and it's so much healthier for them. Just got another Rottie puppy! 🙄😴
Minus the rice and corn due to allergies, I do this already with and without fd. but I minimally process.. steaming the vegetables partially or raw is best.
Great video! I’m making our two Golden Retriever’s food now and about to freeze dry for the first time. You are so right! It IS a ton of work but that’s okay. I actually purchased a “bus tub” from Sam’s Club that restaurants use to pick up dirty dishes… it’s a fabulous tub for dumping all my ingredients into then hand mixing! I then pour the meat into the large aluminum pans I get at Sam’s club. I bake them at 325 for 45-60 min. I cool at room temp and refrigerate overnight. I made a quadruple batch last night and am dividing today … I have the new Harvest Right XL Commercial 7 tray unit. I was thankful you shared 48 hours to process it all! I will plan on that to get the weekend off :-) haha Also, ziplock sandwich baggies are perfect size for the XL tray! I can fit two across and five down and I am going to get 70 portions in one run of freeze drying ( hear me party!?) I am pre-freezing the portions so I will let you know how long it takes to freeze dry the cooked product! God bless! I love your videos!!
Preserving my dogs homemade food is the exact reason I'm researching freeze dryers and watching way to many videos lol. Also very excited to do human food as well. The main recipe I use is from Judy Morgan's yin & yang book, basic puploaf. It's a complete and balanced meal. Everything is ground up and mixed together. A couple concerns I have is if I can freeze dry the organ mean (liver, heart, gizzards) and there's also a small amount of flax seed oil. All the other ingredients I believe have been covered in other videos. If anyone can answer this question that would be amazing because my freezer and deep freezer are over run with dog food 😆 plus if I lose power for to long all her food will go bad.
@@thefreezedryingcommunity thank you. I just joined your FB group last night and have learned even more there. It's pretty amazing what you have put together.
I freeze dry raw calf liver all the time . I put it in a mason jar that has a bail . Raw liver has no detectable order to me but my dog comes from another room to get it . I just put an oxygen absorber in it. I'm working on how to freeze dry all other meats and veg . I already FD pumpkin and mix it in with each meal.
I dont make this specific diet. I bake or make fresh just because I have 2 critters 1 decent med-LG dog and a cat. Plus this time we are donating to the shelter. I'm trying something different this year also being the fact I dont have a freez drier and have to use my over. I ground and lightly baked the turkey. But this time I pureed it with veggies and fruit. (No corn). Most shelter dogs struggle with sensitivity. Anyway I've been occasionally doing home cooked meals and and I've noticed a difference in his poop. They say if a dogs poop is normal and only once a day. They are absorbing more nutrients. I've noticed a difference in both of their coats and mental health.
I don't have a freeze dryer but I do make my dog food. Dogs are carnivorous so they need a bigger meat portion than everything else. I don't use pumpkin but do put in some dehydrated sweet potato but sparely as there is a lot of sugar in the potatoes I use the brown rice no corn as it is empty calories. My recipe is 12 pounds chicken, 2 cups dry brown rice, peas and carrots frozen bag, green beans frozen, and I add cut up apples or blueberries depending on what I have. I instant pot my chicken with 2 cups water take the chicken out to a hugh bowl to cool then instant pot everything else in the juices. mix everything in the bowl. and freeze, when I serve he gets cheese on top or yogurt on the side. My dog doesn't like eggs and doesn't do well with turkey or hamburger. He only weigh 20 lbs so this will last almost a month for us. It would be awesome to be able to freeze dry as it takes up so much space in my garage freezer and is a pain when traveling. My dog is almost 10 yrs and has been on this since I got him. Vet says that he is extremely healthy for his age.
Wonderful video. Making pur own freeze dried dog food is so much healthier than commercial and its a great prep item to have on hand. I have taken to cooking for my OES because he just doesn't seem to do well on commercial. I will be getting a freeze dryer now.
Thank you for this! We have been buying prepackaged frozen food for our dogs and it is $160 for 8 frozen meals! This is going to save us quite a bit of money! And we also know what goes in it so if we are starving we can eat it too! 😂
I do ground chicken, eggs, flax seeds, oatmeal , sweet potatoes or carrots , canned green beans and mix everything like a mush and dehydrate. I ordered a freeze dryer so I will freeze dry it now. That is the only thing my dogs will eat . I do everything raw. You are right, simplify your life, do it raw except the rice of course. I don’t do rice, I use oatmeal. They love dehydrated beef liver and chicken feet.
I am learning. It seems to me that it would be way, way easier to FD all the ingredients separately, (meat, vegies, taters yadda) then make a mix a balanced formula from all the dry stuff. No/yes?
The freeze dryer makes the best raw liver treats. My dogs prefer these to the ones from the pet store. I would add some liver, kidney and heart to the mix, but your recipe sounds good. Feeding real food for dogs is always pricier than commercial dog food but oh so much better for them.
If you are a hunter or have access to innards, that's what drives dogs CRAZY. And, it's crazy good for them & often free or very cheap to fill out the meals. As well as you can find produce that is not pretty or has some spots on it or bruised, very cheaply, if you don't grow your own. If you have the space, freeze all of the individual ingredients until you have enough and time to cook and FD them. You can always keep a batch or two in your fridge and freezer as well.
I always made food with venison and the innards, the dogs loved the stuff. After I processed the deer we would throw the hole carcass in a huge pot and boiled it then pulled the bones out. You would be surprised how much meat u get off that carcass
Very cool Brian - I have been thinking what to do for my wife's dogs, (2 small dogs) You are right - this looks like a lot of work. I'm thinking I'll dry the canned food they already get in 1/4 cup patties and feed it dry with their kibbles. It's more for a SHTF event anyway - not for everyday. This is what they get everyday already. Or not - the cans will keep nicely on the shelf for years. Good talk Brian - you talked me out of it. Thanks. I see some heaters in the comments - seems everyone has a better idea...right? Just do what you do Brian - thanks for the work and this informative video.
My mother in law makes all of her dogs food and she gave me ideas and the process. After doing it once for this video, i will never do it again. I do think that it is better for the dog, but there are plenty of good store bought alternatives that are comparable or close. This was so much work! I love my pup, but i don't even put that much work into my biggest cook for the family. As for "haters", they are part of the gig. They feed my fire and i am one who still believes in freedom of opinion (even if they are wrong)😂
I'd make sure to read the ingredients because they're starting to put a sweetener called Xylitol in foods like peanut butter, and it's extremely poisonous to dogs. I don't know, but things like that pumpkin "MIGHT" have a sweetener. Keep up the great work.
I cook my fur baby food and by Dr Marty dried freeze as a topper but this video was interesting I may want to do this let me go check prices for these DF
Love this! Thank you! I've been wanting to do both dog and cat food. Do you do cat food? Also, how do you know how much to feed your dog and how much water to rehydrate? I'm new to trying to figure all this out.
i would recommend the website mentioned in the video. It will give you an idea of meeting all of your pets requirements and make sure they have the correct amounts. I eyeball the water added because you can make the food the consistency you prefer. ie: old dogs have bad teeth or it may be easier on their stomach.
If you know the weight of the food before you freeze dry it and if you know the weight of the food after, that difference is the weight of water. If starting weight is 2 pounds and dried weight is 1 pound, you would have to add 1 pound of water to reconstitute it. Since a cup of water is about 7.5 ounces, you'd have to add a little over 2 cups of water.
So I made this recipe today. It is a lot of work. I did put all of my items into a large roaster and cooked that way. I mixed all the cooked items with the bone cooked items like pumpkin, yogurt and apples in a large aluminum pan. I fed my dogs dinner and filled the FD. Probably another 5 days or food left. Awesome recipe, thanks for videoing this. Will you try FD some dog treats next?
Some people have commented they think this recipe has to much corn and sugar content. GO to the site mentioned in the video and make sure it meets your pups needs if you are going to feed it regular.
make sure to check if it has all the vitamins, minerals and omega your dog needs or your dog likely to have health issues because of that. You might wanna add suplements or natural sources for that but check if vitamins or minerals go bad if it's cooked. Also I would skip corn and rice. Just sweet patatoes have enough carbs or just rice.
@@thefreezedryingcommunity i buy organ powder capsules Taurine Turmeric Parsley and raw feed...been studying for a long time...vary the diet like you do for humans.
Today’s the day! I bought the large, and now we wait. I’ve heard you say you love kitchen gadgets, then watched you cob corn with a knife, lol. There are at least half a dozen styles of tools that do that...I have three, lol. One question...can we do this with CHICKEN LAYER PELLET? I keep hearing that you can’t store feed longer than 6 mos...that’s problem number one...then what if we can’t even buy it?? Need this explored. Thank you so much for the dog/cat recipe. Will be doing this one for sure. We have 4 dogs and one cat. Now let’s figure out the 30 chickens...self sufficiency is the way!
Hello. I am completely new at this. I'm waiting for the electrician to do the necessary hook up. I've been watching videos on dog foods.... My question is, can I grind all the food through a meat grinder and then baked in the oven?
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! and for the web site! I have always wanted to make food for my dog. My I ask what size freeze dryer you have and have you used or heard of any reviews of the oil free one? ThankYou again!
Btw…I made my own dog food with free meat. Just ask your friends for old freezer meat. I just bought a freeze dryer but have yet to receive it. Hoping in the next 2 weeks
Still waiting for my FD..hopefully we get it first part of July. One of the biggest reasons for ordering a FD is I make my dogs their food..I have been doing this for over 20 years and under the supervision of a vet. Your recipe isn’t bad, I do raw organic with bones ground(chicken turkey pheasant duck). For bigger animals such as beef, bison, pork ,elk I use bone meal. It is really really important that bone meal be included. Amazon sells k-cal which I highly recommend for pets. You MUST NOT use garden bone meal! Use either bone meal made for pets or humans. I would be careful about the rice and corn..they can cause allergies. I would also look at adding greens such as bok choy, Swiss chard and or kale. If you FD the eggs scrambled with the shells broken up, it could be the calcium source as well. The other thing that is good for dogs is blueberries. I give them as well. Maybe look at a complete vitamin mix to make sure all their nutritional needs are met..Others wise, homemade food made with real ingredients is the best for your fur babies. You know none of the ingredients will be recalled..and there is nothing artificial in their food. 💕🐶
I'm interested. I've been making my furbabys food for 15 year's. I've got 3 Cane corso Italian mastiffs.❤️ I add ground flax seed and coconut, Salmon oil.
sorry to be offtopic but does any of you know a tool to get back into an Instagram account..? I somehow lost the login password. I love any tips you can give me!
@Forest Rhys thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm trying it out atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
I'll probably try this after we go through the bags of dog food we have now. I have a question, we buy high end locally made dried kibble for our dogs. It's like boutique dog food. It's very pure, no grains, just meat and peas. Can I freeze dry that? Have anyone ever tried freeze drying those little round chewy treats from Bill Jack? I got a ton of them on sale. I could just freeze them. Thanks for the recipe.
I am looking into buying one for that reason. Crunching the numbers, it would pay for itself quickly. I currently raw feed my dogs my own homemade food. I portion and freeze meals for 5 dogs once a month. Lots of work and freezer space. The only food that comes close in freeze dried form that is commercially available is Sojos. A 7lb bag of Sojos would feed my dogs (per the bag instructons) for just shy of a week! 1 bag is $120! That means I'd pay roughly $500/mo. for food. I just can't do that. The food I buy and process myself is about $150/mo. It would likely be less if I freeze dried it because then I am not using ziplocs and the like to store each meal, freezer space and so on. I could put it in an airtight container and scoop & rehydrate what is needed. My savings would be about $350-375/mo. At 350/mo, with dog food alone (I do plan on using it for more) it would pay for itself in less than 1 year. Those are very loose, conservative #s. YMMV
My guy Spirit can’t do yogurt. Learned the hard way. Wakes me up at all hours to do messy bms. That freeze dryer is not cheap and needs to be added to cost factor equation. How long would it take to pay for itself? Thanks for sharing. Lucky dog
Does the weight of the dog food include the tray. If so how much does an empty tray weigh? I’m trying to plan how much dog food I can process at one time.
FYI there is a dog broth called Brutus Bone Broth formulated for dogs you can get at target but it's 7.99. I use that for my dogs mixture plus some water. Also I see you dont really add salt to the recipe... don't they need a certain percentage? I don't think the naturally occurring amount in the ingredients you added is enough. Overall great video~! There are some corners I would probably end up cutting to get the same results (not in quality) but this is a great guide 👌🏼
You are doing this the hard way! Get a big canning pot (at your hardware store.) Dump in the cottage cheese, pumpkin and beans. Chop up apples in food processor and dump in pot. Lightly cook carrots, sweet potatoes and broccoli. Chop in processor and dump in pot. Put meat in processor after it's cooked and dump in pot. Scramble eggs and dump in pot. Dump in brown rice when cooked. Mix it all up thoroughly and cool. Then put in trays and cool.
Wondering how it would do with cat food. My recipe is ground meat, liver and a premade vitamin mix. I normally add water and then freeze in 2lb increments. Obviously, i would think i could leave the water out, but my cats enjoy the blood from the meat. And they love lamb, which is fatty
If you make homemade pet food you need to make sure you add a balancer of vitamins and things like Taurine Balance it recipes are made to work with their supplement. There are a few other good ones out there it’s important for your pets health
Do you happen to have a paper recipe I could get from you for the dog food? I tried to write down as much as I could and hopefully I got it but if you have a recipe, that would be great! By the way, the food looks great! We just got a freeze dryer and I'm excited to begin making food for my dogs!!
I've got about 50 pounds of snow goose meat from a recent snow goose hunt. I want to freeze dry some treats for my labs and am looking for suggestions and recipes. Could you comment?
I just posted a raw one for cats above. I’m going to be freeze-drying this soon in those silicone FD trays with 60 cubes of 1 tbsp each. Each adult cat would get about 8 cubes a day, rehydrated at 1:1. Better too wet than not so will experiment. I’m also thinking of using a jerky gun to do the tube-shape that they go wild for - like the Stella and Chewy ones. No more smelly poops either. Nice bonus.
I live in England and cannot find canned pumpkin anywhere. So instead I'm going my my own from fresh. How many ounces are in the cans so I know roughly how much to make.
@@thefreezedryingcommunity Thank you for replying. I like to try to grow the majority of my food in my back yard and it would be nice to be make my dogs food as it is more nutritious. As well as not paying £45.99 for a 7kg bag.
Why wouldn't you throw the apple core in as well, isn't there a ton of nutrients in there. I used to make this same recipe for my dogs when I used to breed boxers and she had atleast 10 pups that were healthy. I also used venison alot of the time
LMAO! I seen some rookie cooking mistakes while you were making them, ex. Chocolate chip cookies...the flour, ect. Yes the large does require a dedicated 20 amp circuit - however the large will process more food than the small and medium dryer...combined. Been using my large and oil less pump 2 years almost 24/7 - Love it.
So it wont be dry food right? Please I need an easy dry food idea for a dear friend Santuary (300 dogs)in Brazil where he cant afford to buy food anymore and he is desperate!!!
I am feeding my dogs a raw food diet but this seemed like something I would be interested doing until I saw the cost of a freeze drier! They're costly!
just chop it all cook in one pot put eggs in at end n just freeze it,dog wants it chunky, not baby food,20 years making dog food some sage n rosemary n tumeric ,dont need to peel carrot ,potatoe
What am I missing with the math... I thought you weighed each tray out at 2 pounds x 8 trays would be 16 pounds total finished product right? But the cost comparison is only for 8 pounds total finished product?
Thanks for the video. Question: Does anyone have experience or can you lead me to information about effectiveness of freeze-dried dry dog food (kibble)? As prices rise, I would like to purchase kibble and store dog food (kibble) for long term use (15+ year shelf life). I know I can scrounge up food for myself when SHTF, but our 60 lb pups eat a lot (and are very active here on the farm) and we want to ensure they will always have food as well. Right now, we do a combo of BARF (give the dogs a raw Cornish game hen or turkey neck) about every other day. They have access to kibble all day but for daily breakfast, I top their kibble with homemade dog food (1:1 ratio) each in separate bowls. Thanks for any insights you or your viewers might have. - M&L
WOW! Pricy way to feed a dog! As for adding corn it is usually the first ingredient dog food companies use to make your dog food! That alone should tell you something. Their are so many dog foods on the market it drives you crazy. And thousands of opinions of who is right. I field trialed beagles for several years. The biggest problem was making sure your dog had the energy to make it through 8 hrs of a grueling pace in the trial. I believe conditioning was the first priority and second was nutrition. We always shopped for the best quality food on the market. I always thought protein was the most important ingredient until a vet pointed out to me that protein was the first thing a body burned off for energy. He told me fat is there for reserve energy and that was what would get my dog through to the end of the trial, so don't neglect the fat when you are making this dog food if you have a more athletic type dog. I currently own an American Bully and I feed him a 32% protein/ 22 % fat diet with 1 cup of raw venison added to it every day. He is a lean, muscular dog, high energy type dog. Not an ounce of fat on him! Fat is important, how much depends on how active your dog is. Another ingredient you should consider adding to your food is bone meal, easily acquired! Just take chicken bones and grind them to a pulp with a ninja food grinder. They are loaded with vitamins and nutrition. Be sure to check your bone meal for shards. Bottom line is if you love your pet feed him decent food not the 15.99 a bag of economy crap...It's junk even if the AAFCO says it ok.
Dogs should eat a raw diet. (Ick, humans wouldn't like that, but they are not humans) Mine get beef, chicken, turkey that I put through a food grinder, fish, eggs (all raw & freeze dried) pumpkin, green beans, cranberries, carrots, peas and some other veggies. When I process my chickens, I make a bone broth out of the carcasses and freeze dry. I also add vit D, Glucosamine to their food prep. I take the powdered bone broth add liquid and pour it over their food and let set for about 15 min.. I have large breed dogs (5) that eat a total of 16 cups per day (8 cups twice/day). I also have a medium size freeze dryer. The recipe I have came from a holistic veterinarian. I still cannot produce enough to take them completely off of kibble. Maybe someday, but I calculated out that I would need to raise 300 chickens & 20 turkeys per year and buy the beef & fish, just for dog food. WOW. My oldest dog is 17 year old. That is pretty good for a large breed dog. PS They also only get well or reverse osmosis water.
@@fyrcat57 -I try. It is very time consuming with 5 large breed dogs! I raise my own chickens, so there is a lot of processing before they even get to the freeze dryer! Also, with the meat, I grind it all into burger, add the rest of the ingredients, put it in the pan and cut it with a plastic knife into single servings. On the Medium size one I get 7 servings per pan. About 6 oz. each I think it was, BEFORE freeze drying. They break apart real easy that way. PS-THEY LOVE IT.
I feed dogs raw food...pureed veggies....more nutrients not to cook... Limit cooked sweet potatoes... Rice not recommended daily... 2-3 eggs per week for dogs.

I'm sure they appreciate it!
Love your details. How did it rehydrate?
Minus the rice and corn due to allergies, I do this already with and without fd. but I minimally process.. steaming the vegetables partially or raw is best.
👍
Just found this, I have a diabetic pooch, I will edit recipe for that. Thank you for putting this out there.
Thanks! Murphy eats very well! Lucky dog!
He deserves it!
I'd love a similar recipe for cat food!
I just got FD today will definitely get to making my Dog that recipe.
I will plan on that to get the weekend off :-) haha
Also, ziplock sandwich baggies are perfect size for the XL tray!
I would just add the flxseed oil when serving, it doesn't need to be refridged
@@thefreezedryingcommunity thank you. I just joined your FB group last night and have learned even more there. It's pretty amazing what you have put together.
I freeze dry raw calf liver all the time . I put it in a mason jar that has a bail . Raw liver has no detectable order to me but my dog comes from another room to get it . I just put an oxygen absorber in it. I'm working on how to freeze dry all other meats and veg . I already FD pumpkin and mix it in with each meal.
Best video so far. Ive been lookking for this, THANK YOU. Dogs thank you too
Just lost mine a couple weeks ago😥 been rough around here without him
I dont make this specific diet.
Great for you for making this for your dog . Dogs should Not be eating rice or carbs like potatoes rice beans peas
You need a freeze dryer! You are going through the hard part already.
Wonderful video. Making pur own freeze dried dog food is so much healthier than commercial and its a great prep item to have on hand. I have taken to cooking for my OES because he just doesn't seem to do well on commercial. I will be getting a freeze dryer now.
Murphy is just too adorable! 🥰
Thank you for this! We have been buying prepackaged frozen food for our dogs and it is $160 for 8 frozen meals! This is going to save us quite a bit of money! And we also know what goes in it so if we are starving we can eat it too! 😂
Wow. that is spendy!
Dang! So glad you're doing this video! I was just thinking about that!
I am learning. It seems to me that it would be way, way easier to FD all the ingredients separately, (meat, vegies, taters yadda) then make a mix a balanced formula from all the dry stuff. No/yes?
The cost breakdown is really nice. Freeze dried dog food is the best quality but really expensive.
That's true!
add in the $2500 freeze dryer and you may as well have a personal chef come to your house every night.
@@iamsofrank How much money does a professional chef earn in a month?
@@iamsofrank Just be thankful - in Canada the medium costs $5000. 😳
The freeze dryer makes the best raw liver treats. My dogs prefer these to the ones from the pet store. I would add some liver, kidney and heart to the mix, but your recipe sounds good. Feeding real food for dogs is always pricier than commercial dog food but oh so much better for them.
I agree. I freeze dried chicken livers chicken hearts beef hearts beef along. Dogs definitely need organ meat.
I freeze dry beef liver. Organ meat is best for dogs according to Dr. Marty
In the wild, animals always go for the organs first. Best nutrition.
Thanks! Have you tried to freeze dry the kibble?
I dont think it will last. Too much oil and grease
I'd make sure to read the ingredients because they're starting to put a sweetener called Xylitol in foods like peanut butter, and it's extremely poisonous to dogs. I don't know, but things like that pumpkin "MIGHT" have a sweetener. Keep up the great work.
Interesting! i will check
Online there is a recipe to prepare bulk scrambled eggs in the oven. Good to feed the chickens, too!
I cook my fur baby food
and by Dr Marty dried freeze as a topper but this video was interesting I may want to do this let me go check prices for these DF
Love this!
Did you find a good cat food raw food recipe...or even a cooked one?
How much water do you use to rehydrate - and any specific techniques you used?
If you know the weight of the food before you freeze dry it and if you know the weight of the food after, that difference is the weight of water. If starting weight is 2 pounds and dried weight is 1 pound, you would have to add 1 pound of water to reconstitute it. Since a cup of water is about 7.5 ounces, you'd have to add a little over 2 cups of water.
My dog loved to eat steamed broccoli. It was his favorite treat. Sadly Skylar my rough collie died on October 13, 2020. This year sucks.
sorry to hear that. My pup is getting up there in years as well.....we all are
How long will these keep in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers?

Thank you! Cheers!
Why did you peeled the sweet potatoes? That is a lot of work but well worth it! Good job!
It is a lot of work. I'm making 100lbs dry food (not freeze dried)
I FD raw beef cut into pieces. They reconstitute beautifully. Corn. I don’t like how it doesn’t reconstitute
Hello. I am completely new at this. I'm waiting for the electrician to do the necessary hook up. I've been watching videos on dog foods.... My question is, can I grind all the food through a meat grinder and then baked in the oven?
I think that would work. I have also made pucks of dog food with dividers and molds.
You put 20 pounds of food in a FD designed for no more than 10. Bravo! You stress-tested the dryer and won.
The recipe sounds great, I'll try it minus the corn since corn has no benefit to a dog, it's a filler.
Try using the website i mentioned on the video to match your breeds specific needs
What freeze dryer do you use/would recommend?
I own a medium and xl Harvestright
How do you cut or shape the freezed dried food so it looks like kibble - evenly shaped?
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! and for the web site! I have always wanted to make food for my dog. My I ask what size freeze dryer you have and have you used or heard of any reviews of the oil free one? ThankYou again!
I have the medium. The large will do around 25% more per cycle but requires a dedicated 20 amp
circuit
Retired at 40- Live.Life.Simple. Thank You, still trying to decide which one to purchase. I like the idea of not messing with the oil tho.
Btw…I made my own dog food with free meat. Just ask your friends for old freezer meat. I just bought a freeze dryer but have yet to receive it. Hoping in the next 2 weeks
The he likes it made me think of the old cereal commercial " he likes it, Mikey really likes it" 😁
You got it👍
Still waiting for my FD..hopefully we get it first part of July. 💕🐶
Did you get it.?
I'm interested. I've been making my furbabys food for 15 year's. I've got 3 Cane corso Italian mastiffs.❤️ I add ground flax seed and coconut, Salmon oil.

@Forest Rhys thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm trying it out atm.
Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Can you do this with a dehydrator?
I don't think you will get the same results. Rehydrated freeze dried food and rehydrated dehydrated food will give a much different product.
If the contents are meat and peas, it should do just fine.
Has anyone out there gotten the harvest right for dog food? How long before the harvest tight paid for itself?
YMMV
@@annaworley4041 Thank you!!!!
My guy Spirit can’t do yogurt. Learned the hard way. Wakes me up at all hours to do messy bms.
That freeze dryer is not cheap and needs to be added to cost factor equation. How long would it take to pay for itself? Thanks for sharing. Lucky dog
Can you freeze dry regular dry dog food ?
Does the weight of the dog food include the tray. If so how much does an empty tray weigh?
I’m trying to plan how much dog food I can process at one time.
I am going to try this!! Have food storage for us humans, and need to get our dogs in line!😂
😀
FYI there is a dog broth called Brutus Bone Broth formulated for dogs you can get at target but it's 7.99. I use that for my dogs mixture plus some water. Also I see you dont really add salt to the recipe... don't they need a certain percentage? I don't think the naturally occurring amount in the ingredients you added is enough. Overall great video~! There are some corners I would probably end up cutting to get the same results (not in quality) but this is a great guide 👌🏼
How do you know how long to set the timer for a big batch like this?
you don't need to know. the newest software does everything for you
You are doing this the hard way!
I use a big roasting pan for mixing - works great.
Wondering how it would do with cat food. My recipe is ground meat, liver and a premade vitamin mix. I normally add water and then freeze in 2lb increments. Obviously, i would think i could leave the water out, but my cats enjoy the blood from the meat. And they love lamb, which is fatty
How long will this store after freeze drying? If you pack and seal in Mylar bags etc. Or in jars and have oxygen taken out. Thanks.
Meat is tricky, mostly high fat meat. I usually assume 3-5 years on meat. Depending on lots of variables, it be more and it could be less
How can you tell how much to give them? Portion it out same as you would normal dogfood after you reconstitute it.
If you make homemade pet food you need to make sure you add a balancer of vitamins and things like Taurine Balance it recipes are made to work with their supplement. There are a few other good ones out there it’s important for your pets health
You are correct. We have learned a lot from making this video many years ago.
Man, your dog eats better then I do :)

What about those that feed their dogs, the raw dog food diet? Can it work just as well?
Yes. I raw feed and it's one of the reasons I started looking at freeze dryers.
Why do you add grains?
Sorry if it’s in the comments…but how did you rehydrate it?
I thought the freeze dryer medium was only for 7 to 10 pounds of food? You had 20 pounds of food in there. Can't actually do the 20 pounds safely?
Do you have freeze dried recipes for cats?
Not yet!
@@thefreezedryingcommunity please make one for cats! ;)
Nice bonus.
What was left in the bowl?
I live in England and cannot find canned pumpkin anywhere. So instead I'm going my my own from fresh. How many ounces are in the cans so I know roughly how much to make.

Why did you need to cook the eggs ?
The egg white needs to be cooked to prevent salmonella. Keeping the yolks raw is best. Light boil eggs 3-4 minutes.
I notice most ppl use the Medium sized FD
Why not the large size?

grow your own carrot, potatoe spice,n i mix it with quilty kibble, chix hearts, gizzards, liver, cheap
PS They also only get well or reverse osmosis water.
patty moore do you freeze dry your dogs food? I cannot wait for my FD to arrive so I can FD my dogs raw diet!
