Fellow Midwesterner here (Michigan) living in Ikoma, Nara and I can attest to missing the diner culture! There's a lot of great cafes down here in Kansai/Kinki, but sometimes I just want a FAT stack of pancakes with a diabetes/heart attack-inducing amount of maple syrup and butter on top! 😮‍💨Apple pie, casserole, salad that isn't really a salad (apples with whipped cream and snickers), all that good stuff I never thought I'd miss. And before anyone asks, the souffle pancakes do NOT suffice as a replacement lmao
As a sidenote, I've been bingewatching your videos over the last few days and am now itching to move up to Tohoku. You radiate passion for the Japanese outdoors and, as a fellow hiker and trail runner, fills me with such joy to learn about and visit these places, even vicariously!
Okay last tangent: as a Deaf person, I'd really appreciate it if you could do proper closed captions! The auto-generated ones are often absent when you're talking outdoors with wind, and they're awful at picking up any Japanese. If you could edit them with Romaji + translation for non-Japanese speakers or use a service like Rev, it'd make your content accessible to a lot more people!

    • @GoNorthJapan

Yes, exactly!! Also miss having someone come by and continually refill my coffee...
And great! So happy that you're enjoying them! Tohoku is definitely a great place to live! It is hot up here right now, but generally nowhere near as bad as central Japan. And all the amazing hikes that you can do where you have it basically all to yourself!!

Listening to you made me want to visit Wisconsin! The cafe culture sounds great. You're right, independently-run cafes are not huge in provincial Japan, much less breakfast cafes - maybe you should open one, since you seem to be a good cook :)
Glad you're also taking more gear with you, I was a bit worried in your early videos about how little you were taking. I always err on the side of caution and take a little too much, but it's worth the peace of mind when hiking alone. You're wise to turn back when weather turns bad, it's not about being tough, it's about being safe.

The craft beer, the cheese curds, the obnoxiously huge stacks of sugar coated fake maple syrup soaked pancakes, crispy shredded hash browns, yesssss. I'm really going to miss Latin food (if I'm actually able to move next year still). We have a huge Latinx population in our current area, and the food is just on another level. I'm going to have legitimate withdrawls. Also, I just firmly believe the Midwest is so underrated. I can't wait for the equipment video, but the rivers of molten sulfur sound pretty freaking cool too. lol

Started watching your videos after seeing you in Sharla and Chris’ and I’m having a blast going through them; There are a lot of places I want to visit and hike at now 😁
I have a question for you if you don’t mind - How did you learn Japanese? What methods and resources helped you the most? As someone that has studied it for a while now, I’m always interested to hear other people’s journey with the language, and I bet I’m not the only person interested.
    Looking forward to seeing more!

    • @GoNorthJapan
      @GoNorthJapan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching!
I learned before the age of smartphone and apps (Passed N1 in 2004), which was good and bad. Bad in that there are so many great resources now that I didn't have access too, but good in that there were less distractions back then and I think most of us had longer attention spans and weren't so addicted to little dopamine hits from our phones...
Basically, I bought beginning textbooks meant for people trying to enter Japanese tech schools that taught Japanese from zero but without any English glossary or anything. (I think the books were intended for Indians, Chinese, and Southeast Asians.) I also made a few thousand flashcards by hand and practiced with them, keeping them in different piles based on my familiarity with them so I would eventually move all of them into the (I know it without thinking) section...
I started learning after I arrived in Japan, so I had tons of access to Japanese people for help and practice.
Not sure if that helps, but that's what I did!

      @@GoNorthJapan Thanks Quinlan, that is super helpful - you’re a star! ⭐️
I’m following a similar method to you, so it’s good to know I’m on a tried and tested path. I have to say I am thankful I’m learning in the age of apps etc but I absolutely agree with you how difficult it is to maintain focus now - I’m definitely guilty of being easily distracted! It’s easy to get overwhelmed with the sheer amount of content at your disposal. It’s ultimately a good thing to have more options though and there’s never been a better time to learn.
I have a couple of Japanese friends but I’m far too self conscious of my ability to speak with them but I absolutely should. I’m guessing this was a massive help for you when learning as well? Finally, (sorry for bombarding you with questions!) could I ask how you approached your flash carding? Was it solely for Kanji?
By the way, your Airbnb looks amazing! I didn’t get to Morioka on my previous trips but it’s on my list and I’d love to visit (fingers crossed for 2021).
      Thanks again.

I used to hike in the rain, but then one of our favourite trails in the Waitakere ranges had a flash flood, destroying the bridge. Sometimes it's better to play it safe so you can hike another day. I'd like to hike North Japan someday, the hikes I've done in Japan were enjoyable :)

I sometimes wonder how much of what I see as "American" or "normal in the States" is actually just Midwestern... I've seen some of these TH-cam videos that are sort of jokes showing how Wisconsin people behave, and it made me realize that being friendly and chatty to strangers at the bus stop (or supermarket line) is not normal in the States, just where I'm from....

Yeah- I'm relatively new to it. Probably still not using 75% of its potentiality. I have 2 Sigma lenses for it. That one and a 16mm. I'd love to use it more but it doesn't work well on a selfie stick (kinda heavy, not quite wide enough, and relatively weak stabilization compared to the GoPro) so I mostly use it when I'm talking to a camera on a tripod.

If you aren't gaining any money at the moment you should put in ads in your videos so you do get a bit more of an income and stop them when you get more money! I am sure putting in one add won't bother anyone for the time being. Adds really annoy me generally especially because its pushing you to buy stuff (and it isn't eco-friendly). Now I wouldn't mind for this situation, so don't hesitate to put one in !

@@GoNorthJapan I was thinking about the pop up ads that you can allow youtube to put into the middle of your youtube videos. But actually the ones you are talking about will probably get more money so why not!

I think you mean Monetisation of youtube videos. There are rules about being able to monetize a video and one of them is having a certain number of subscribers, so tell all your friends about the GoNorth Japan channel and soon Quinlan will start earning some money for his hard work.

@@jifuk Oh- I'm already monetized actually. I thought that you meant something else. Monetization doesn't really make you money unless you have more than 100,000 subscribers I think. It's like $40 a month. That's nice, but not exactly enough for groceries.
