Some Americans are ignorant about US Territories. Public schools have failed in this area.

Most “Americans” have no idea that America is a continent and not a country. They also aren’t aware that America is the name the Spaniards used to name the whole continent a full century before the Anglo Saxons(the thru immigrants) migrated here. What’s more ironic is that the people they consider “illegal immigrants” were called Americans a full century before the white people migrated to the already America by the Spaniards.

The military has provisions where those who serve can be fast tracked to citizenship. Many vets have used it and the discrimination that stopped it was history not present day so there is no excuse. If you thin American Samoa should be a state vote for it to become one. Or even a possession like Puerto Rico.

The can’t vote in American Samoa because it is a Territory and not a State. They can vote if they move to one of the States. They don’t have to “immigrate” because they’re already US Nationals.

    • @cgallegos2106

To be fair, it’s a really stupid legal issue that’s been around since the Guano Act when we annexed American (east) Samoa. Samoans are designated as “American Nationals” instead of “American Citizens” because the island of American Samoa is designated as a Unorganized Unincorporated Territory of the United States, which means it’s a territory of the US that has no government.
It’s a legal issue that has never been addressed, which is why American Samoans are not citizens but can travel to the US and gain citizenship (easier than any other immigrants but that’s not by much).
Puerto Ricans, Mariannans, Guamese, and Virgin Islanders are designated as American citizens but can’t vote in US elections unless they move to the US.

@@leeman1525 Not quite right. They play a semantics game. I went through this issue with law enforcement being from Guam myself. There is no legal difference between a National and a Citizen with rights gained from natural birth. It is just like the difference between visiting a state and moving to a state. If I move from Wyoming to South Carolina I cease being a citizen with resident status in Wyoming and become a citizen resident of South Carolina with the right to vote in South Carolina. If I just visit South Carolina I am treated as a US National in South Carolina without the right to vote there. It took a federal judge to tell law enforcement and my grad school (they wanted to see my student visa) to knock it off and treat all people from US territories as US citizens. They are only "Nationals" if they were born before the territory became a US possession.

The question of American Samoa’s unincorporated status has recently gained attention, as prominent leaders and institutions call for re-evaluation of the century-old Supreme Court rulings known as the Insular Cases. These rulings effectively allow people in U.S. territories, including American Samoa, to be treated differently under U.S. law, reinforcing a status that many argue resembles second-class citizenship.
In a historic move, Assistant Attorney General Carlos Felipe Uriarte recently condemned these cases in a letter to Congress, explicitly denouncing the "racist rhetoric and reasoning" within the Insular Cases as incompatible with "foundational American principles of equality, justice, and democracy." This statement marks the Justice Department's strongest stance to date against the Insular Cases, acknowledging the long-standing inequities these rulings have enabled. Although the letter stops short of asking the Supreme Court to overrule them, it signals a unified policy within the Justice Department to reject these cases as valid legal precedents.
The Insular Cases, decided in the early 1900s, limited the extension of constitutional rights to territories acquired by the U.S. after the Spanish-American War. In one opinion, a justice referred to territories as “inhabited by alien races” who may not align with “Anglo-Saxon principles,” reflecting racist beliefs that have shaped territorial policy for over a century. These cases have been widely criticized as a legal basis for unequal treatment, with advocates like Neil Weare, co-director of Right to Democracy, noting that this public disavowal from the Justice Department represents a substantial shift.
For American Samoa, the implications are profound. Many residents support preserving the current status to protect communal land and traditional culture, fearing that full constitutional rights could disrupt these customs. However, others believe U.S. citizenship would rightly honor American Samoans’ long record of military service and sacrifices for the United States. Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Sonia Sotomayor have both signaled openness to revisiting the Insular Cases, making it possible that the Supreme Court could eventually take up the issue.
If Congress and future U.S. leadership can forge a solution, they could offer American Samoans a path to U.S. citizenship while safeguarding the communal lands and cultural practices that define Samoan life. This balanced approach would reflect both the principles of equality and respect for American Samoa’s unique identity.

For those who don’t know.. Tulsi Gabbard was born in American Samoa.. she served in the US military and she ran for president of the USA.. she also votes and is a current standing member of congress for the state of Hawaii .. US nationals are allowed to vote. Also why back in 2020 Biden went to American Samoa to secure votes from the people there… when it comes to the constitution, bill of rights, and the outlying US territories ALL AMERICANS SHOULD BE EDUCATED ESPECIALLY THOSE who are getting paid to enforce the laws… ESPECIALLY SINCE AMERICAN SAMOA PUTS OUT THE MOST US MILITARY SOLDIERS PER CAPITA, THEY FIGHT AND DIE FOR THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE! More than any American
Update: American Samoans can participate in party primaries and caucuses because these are internal processes run by the political parties to select their presidential candidates. However, when it comes to the general election, voting is restricted to U.S. citizens. Since American Samoans are U.S. nationals, not full citizens, they can’t vote in the general election unless they reside in a U.S. state.
Primaries and caucuses help determine party nominees, while the general election selects the president.

For me, if the U.S. is going to hang on to those lands, claiming them as U.S. territory, we need to change the law making them full citizens, no more "inbetweens". There are two Samoas, one is American Samoa as being referred to in video as an unincorporated US territory . And then there is Samoa- formerly called Western Samoa which is an independent island country. And i think they do have rights in American Samoa just as much as they do in other US territories as well as US states.

@@liliisiufanua5830 that is incorrect.. American Samoa holds a caucus as part of the Democratic primary process, it is a small and remote U.S. territory with a relatively small number of delegates (6 delegates in 2020). Major presidential candidates, including Biden, typically focus their campaigns on larger states and battleground areas with more significant delegate counts.
However, Biden did win the Democratic caucus in American Samoa, securing four of the six available delegates, while Michael Bloomberg won the remaining two… that’s a whole other story, Biden sent AS government 500million to help “secure” those delegate votes back in 2020. Look it up. But yes AS can’t vote in Presidential Elections but they can nominate who will run.. In the 2024 election, Donald Trump secured all six of American Samoa’s delegate votes for the Republican nomination .
