- The trail to the top of Picacho Peak is rocky and, at times, steep. It is a relatively short hike, though, and offers a spectacular setting for observing a desert sunset, making it a desirable location for hiking after work.
Picacho Peak is located about 7 miles northwest of downtown Las Cruces, so it is relatively convenient to reach. Be advised, though, that the final 1.5 miles of road approaching the recreation area is unpaved and relatively rough!
The recreation area is home to over 15 miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and ATV use. The trail to the peak, however, is available for hiking only. It's around 1.5 miles, one way, and includes about 800 feet of elevation change to reach the 4,959-foot peak. The summit views of the Organ Mountains and Mesilla Valley are worth the effort. Be sure to bring plenty of water and to protect your skin from the sun!
As always, our hiking and backpacking videos are filmed in 4K Ultra HD. TH-cam will automatically tailor the video quality to your device, but we suggest viewing on your 4K-compatible television, or device, for best viewing results.

Looks like a great place for a after work hike 👍😎
Absolutely... Thanks for checking it out!
hiking after work...great idea..I have done that a few times!
Thanks! I find it can be a good way to de-stress after a tough day. And if the weather's not nice enough for a hike, I just watch a couple of your videos 👍
Great video. Looks like a lovely hike with breathtaking views. Thanks for sharing 😊👍
Thank you! I thought the views were awesome for a relatively short and easy hike 👍
Nice! New Mexico is beautiful. I hiked in the Gila Wilderness a couple of years ago. Thanks for bringing us with you on this one.
Totally agree! I wanted to make it to the Gila Wildness while I was there, but it didn't work out. I'm hoping to make it back to the southwest this winter, so I may reach out to ask you a few questions about your experience 🙂 Thanks for watching!

Adding New Mexico to my list! Love the terrain and those views are amazing! Can’t wait to see your videos from the AT!
I highly recommend it... I loved it there. I'm hoping to swing back through the southwest this winter 🤞 Thanks! I've got one more short trip planned before I head home this weekend for another round of editing!
Las Cruces is so beautiful!!! Stayed there for 2 days and had no idea there were any hiking trails there!!! 😭😭😭
I absolutely loved it there! Hope you get the chance to make it back! I've got one more Las Cruces hike suggestion coming out tomorrow. Thanks for watching!
Great video! We were wondering, what is the temperature like on that mountain? cheers!
Thank you! It's actually pretty warm... Although you could probably see, and hear, it was pretty windy on the summit, I filmed this video back in March, and it was still in the mid-upper 60s Fahrenheit (around 20 Celsius?) in the late afternoon.
Me want see rattlesnakes!!!!
😔 maybe another time.
This hiking trail looks quite different from the ones I know. However, I enjoyed watching it till the end with great interest. The summit view was gorgeous. Thank you so much for sharing. Have a wonderful day. 😊😊
Thanks! It's different from most of the trails I'm used to hiking, also, but the desert is a great place to hike when it gets too cold where I live! Thank you for watching, and hope you have a wonderful day, also 👍✌
