  • Pingyao Ancient City (平遥古城), located in Shanxi (山西) province, China, is a fascinating destination that offers a glimpse into the country's rich history and culture. This well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage site, dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties, allows visitors to step back in time and explore ancient China's architectural brilliance and traditional lifestyle.
The city wall of Pingyao, constructed over 2,700 years ago, stands as a testament to ancient Chinese engineering and military strategy. Stretching about 6 kilometers in circumference, the wall is punctuated with watchtowers, gate towers, and battlements, offering visitors panoramic views of the city and a sense of its historical significance.
Within the city, the streets and buildings retain their historical layout and design. The traditional residences, shops, and temples are characterized by their courtyards, ornate gateways, and classic Shanxi architecture, providing an authentic feel of ancient Chinese urban planning and social organization.
Visiting Pingyao is not just about exploring its monuments; it's an immersive experience that includes sampling traditional Shanxi cuisine, witnessing folk performances, and participating in local festivals. The city's relatively untouched appearance compared to more modernized urban centers makes it a unique destination for those seeking to understand China's ancient heritage and its continuity into the present.
Whether wandering through the narrow lanes lined with red lanterns, visiting the ancient government offices and temples, or simply enjoying the tranquil ambiance of a bygone era, Pingyao Ancient City offers a captivating journey through China's illustrious past. Its preservation and continued importance as a cultural and historical site make it a valuable treasure not just for China but for the world.

Qin Shihuang’s favorite big yellow dog may never be seen again in the future

According to legend, Qin Shihuang always led a big yellow dog during the process of unifying the Central Plains. Su Dongpo also once wrote a poem: "I am talking about being crazy as a teenager, holding the yellow on the left and holding the blue on the right." The "yellow" here refers to this kind of big yellow dog used for hunting, formerly known as the Chinese Pastoral Dog.
According to legend, Qin Shihuang always led a big yellow dog during the process of unifying the Central Plains. It is this kind of dog that once made Li Si, the prime minister of the Qin Dynasty, lament before his execution: "I want to go out with Ruofu and lead the yellow dog, go up to Cai, chase the cunning rabbit at the east gate, how can I get it!". Su Dongpo also once wrote a poem: "I am talking about being crazy as a teenager, holding the yellow on the left and holding the blue on the right." The "yellow" here refers to this kind of big yellow dog used for hunting, formerly known as the Chinese Pastoral Dog.

Li Xinchun was from Jinan, Xiangyang. The family has a dog, whose nickname is "Black Dragon". He loves it very much. He walks with him when he walks and sits with him, and shares his food with him when he drinks or eats. Suddenly one day, he was drinking heavily outside the city and was unable to return home, so he lay down in the grass. When he met the prefect Zheng Xia while he was out hunting, he saw the grass in the fields was deep and sent people to set fire to it. The place where faith is pure lies, and it is suitable for the wind. When the dog sees the fire coming, it pulls Chun's clothes with its mouth, but Chun doesn't move. There is a stream next to the sleeping place, thirty or fifty steps away. The dog immediately ran towards it, wetted itself in the water, walked back and forth to where it lay, and sprinkled its body with it, thus sparing its owner from great trouble. The dog was tired of carrying water and died in the test. Er Xinchun woke up and saw that the dog was dead and his hair was wet all over his body. He was very surprised. There is only one trace of fire, and I cry because of it. I heard about it from the prefect. The prefect took pity on him and said, "A dog repays kindness better than a human being. How can a human being be ungrateful like a dog?" He then ordered him to be buried with a coffin, coffins, and quilts. There is a tomb of righteous dogs in the south of Jilin today, which is more than ten feet high. In Chinese history, there are countless stories like this about loyal dogs protecting their owners.

The Chinese Garden Dog is one of the excellent local dog breeds in China, with a shoulder height of about 40-55 cm and a weight of about 20-25 kg. The appearance of this dog breed is very similar to that of a wolf, with a short muzzle and a flat forehead. It is widely distributed geographically. It is the product of China's Han ancestors who first experienced thousands of years of farming society. It is traditionally called "Tu Dog", in the south it is called "Cao Dog", and in some places in the north it is also called "Chai Dog" or "Shiba Dog". "Stupid dog". However, due to the impact of a large number of introduced foreign dog breeds, Chinese pastoral dogs, also known as "local dogs" or big yellow dogs, are now being discriminated against and are even on the verge of extinction.

The ancestors of the Chinese Garden Dog are similar to other dog breeds. They are also derived from Southeast Asian wolves. They are widely distributed geographically. China is a large agricultural country, and people's daily life is mainly based on food. Therefore, the native dog has the characteristics of medium size, moderate hair length, not strong carnivorous, omnivorous diet, coarse and not delicate.
According to the records of Qiu Guan Shu in "Book of Rites of Zhou": There are three types of dogs, one is field dog, the other is barking dog, and the third is food dog. This shows that in ancient China, the classification of dogs was based on function, and did not pay much attention to the appearance of the dog. Due to different abilities, the best dogs that can hunt become field dogs, while the dogs that are not able to hunt but are still ferocious become guard barking dogs. If they are no longer useful, they can only be eaten by people.

The Chinese Garden Dog is a dog breed that was selected through natural and artificial selection by Chinese ancestors for thousands or even tens of thousands of years. It has a relatively docile personality and is not likely to actively attack humans. It can live in groups, is very territorial, is easy to raise, has high loyalty, and is not easy to get sick. Even if it does get sick, most of them can find medicine to cure themselves. Therefore, native dogs were widely used in rural areas to guard homes and for early hunting.

Dogs have been mankind's most loyal friends since ancient times. The author was born in a small mountain village in the middle of the mountainous area. As long as I can remember, I have had a big yellow dog at home. It can be said that this big yellow dog accompanied me through my happy childhood. Rhubarb is very benevolent, which is called human nature in rural areas. Every time during the New Year and festivals, when pigs and sheep are slaughtered at home, the meat will be put on the low table in the courtyard. At this time, Rhubarb will lie next to the table and face it. Rhubarb doesn't think twice about the pork and pork bones on the table. If you don't give it to it, it will never take a bite. It lay here just to take care of the meat, and let the neighbor's cat come to steal the food. When the mother threw a bone to it, Rhubarb would quickly pick up the bone in its mouth before the bone fell to the ground.
When the author was about ten years old, Dahuang suddenly became rude to others, always crying and sobbing, and his mother sadly said, "Dahuang is dying." Until one day, rhubarb disappeared. My sister and I searched every corner of the village, but we never saw rhubarb again. A few days later, a neighbor told my mother that Dahuang died in a forest far away from the village. My mother took my sister and me to find Dahuang’s body in the woods. It was late autumn, and Rhubarb was almost covered with leaves. My sister and I burst into tears, holding on to Rhubarb and refusing to let go. My mother also cried secretly. Finally, we buried Rhubarb at the place where it died.
When I got a little older, I heard from the old people in the village that native dogs can sense their own death. When dogs know that their death is approaching, in order not to make their owners sad, most native dogs will find a hidden place to die by themselves. Die in silence.

I think they can rent them and have their hair and make-up done as well, so they can take photos with the beautiful buildings. Not sure though. Do you know?

Very bad. A cidade tem 2700 anos. Mas não filma para mostrar esculturas, nem portas, nem vitrais, nem prédios ou telhados antigos. Só veículos, buzinas e pessoas.

Very true. I also find it strange this video choose to ignore some structures, where the architecture is interesting in this this ancient town. Just merely walking around behind crowds. Lacks planning.

You are from a jealous neighboring country which has nothing much of old to show. Too bad, being between the grandiose of ancient China and refines of old Japan, you just have nothing much to show.

Ping Yao is a UNESCO World Heritage Centre recognized site for its authenticity and historical provenance . Its exceptionally well-preserved example of a traditional Han Chinese city, founded in the 14th century with Its urban fabric shows the evolution of architectural styles and town planning in Imperial China over five centuries.
So you speak with plain jealousy and frustrations.
