I read this book when it first came out earlier this year and thoroughly enjoyed it. My reaction was much the same as yours and you hit the nail on the head-it was flat out entertaining!

Great breakdown, glad you liked it! I had a lot of fun with it too. It felt like it drew a lot of inspiration from Scott Lynch's Gentlemen Bastard series to me, have you read those? If not based on this you'd enjoy them immensely.
I'm definitely going to pick up book 2, but I wasn't as invested in the story. The sequences felt much more repetitive to me than productive. The book 2 cover is just as awesome!
I listened to this, and *LOVED* it! Personally, I felt it had more in common with The Gentleman Bastard series than any Grimdark. I haven't seen any other reviews, but now, I'm curious. Book II cannot come out soon enough for me! 😎😎💜💜

I'm going to take a look at this one. It's depressing that an actual epic fantasy with an actual epic fantasy cover is news. They're even repackaging older books and giving them lame covers, burying all that great artwork.
