  • Guide dog Sammy is retiring after more than eight years of service.
BBC correspondent Sean Dilley wanted to film their final walk together to show the impact of losing a guide dog. He may now have to wait to two years for a new dog.
Since the pandemic, guide dog partnerships in the UK have decreased from around 5,000 to 4,000 because puppy breeding was stopped for volunteer and staff safety.
Sammy will now live with Sean's mother throughout his retirement.

Yes totally agree important things were missed in this news video! Like saying guide dogs get good homes to retire in, like they are trained to match the person and "job " they do also the massive difference donating to the guide dog charity can make to someone and their dog.

It's horrible that dogs live their entire lives for their owners & then they're shunted off to a new home. How utterly heartbreaking for those dogs to lose their human & home in their vulnerable years.

@Helen Alison you start this reply definitively with “like all working dogs”, and end it with “some are in a position to keep them too”.
So it’s not “all” working dogs.
This clip really triggered you didn’t it, I don’t mean triggered in a bad way either, but you’ve made 5 comments on this channel in 2 years, and they all appear to be here, mostly chatting nonsense.

(Breeding centre, puppy raiser, Fosterer, guide dog owner) they can go to their retirement family (which is sometimes their puppy raisers, fosterers or the Guide dog owners family member) if their guide dog owner can't look after them.

I'd never leave my wingman. Sammy has feelings too. Animals feel. it's not all about service but it's about the bond of love that doesn't get severed cos you cant work for someone. Keep present regardless I apologise in advance for not understanding. We're not all the same we all have different needs and capabilities. it's just me... there are no goodbyes for me. Take care.. UPdate... I'm just saying that apparently Sammy will live with mum...oh...alright...woooohooo.. thank God for that... doesn't say anything about that in the video it just looks like people turning their backs... It looked like he's staying. He's got to wait 2 years for another working dog, but that doesn't mean he is going to want to live alone. They've got an unbreakable bond and I can't see him giving up his mate. He did say at the start that you lose your guide dog twice. The obvious time when they pass on, but before then, when they retire. That says to me that he's now going to be a pet.

Hi there. He has retired and is living with family and in very regular contact when a working person is to go through the trauma of retiring a dog, they may not have the luxury of being able to keep a retired dog at home, particularly if you think someone might be out the house for 16 hours in a day the dogs welfare is always first, central and paramount

In this case it seems that Sammy will be living with his mom. I volunteer raising puppies for a guide dog organization in the US - generally it goes, from my understanding, like this: if the person can't or does not want to keep the dog, the next choice is for someone they know to keep them. If this isn't an option, the original puppy raiser has the opportunity to keep the dog (and then potentially someone they know - but I'm not sure), and if none of those options work out, there is a long long list of people and families who want to adopt retired guide dogs or those that did not make it all the way through training.

Extremely ignorant, you obviously know nothing about Guide Dogs. I would advise you to actually look past your feelings and go and see what Guide Dogs do. When the dogs retire they sometimes stay with their owner or owners family members or they go back to their puppy raisers or fosterers. The dogs welfare is always put first. The dogs are usually fine when they are moved to different homes. I know this from experience.
