    Hawaiian diver 48 years of diving alone best way to dive ! Know your limit ! Always inspect your gear. There is no reason to die because of a worn O-ring. Main thing always listen to your inner voice if something feels wrong abort the dive and if there is a problem underwater work the problem keep your cool and when possible always have a back up plan. Want to be safe dive sidemount two rigs better than one

    This is a great topic! And Achims take on the matter is spot on.
    There will always be pros and cons, but's and if's...., lovers and haters...
    A solo dive can be a dangerous "place" to be, if you don't have a clue about what to do and how to it....
    But the same goes for a buddy dive/team dive!
    It is NOT a given thing that we are safe in numbers!!!
    Compare this to driving a car...
    (I'm maybe stepping on some toes here..., but surveys show that 90% of people with a drivers license thinks they are better than average...!)
    (Time to go look in the mirror!)
    Alot of us knows how to drive a car, but how many are really, REALLY proficient at driving a car!?!
    How good are our reactions really, honestly, in an emergency...?!
    Now put more people in the car..., feeling safer now!?! More eyes on the road, right, or...?!
    Is it possible to become very skilled and proficient driving solo?!
    And are there scenarios where more people in a vehicle makes the driving safer?!
    BIG yes to both! But only with proper training!
    Should you doubt this, then ask race drivers, rally drivers, police, ambulance service and fire service.
    Returning the topic of diving:
    Is it safe to dive?!
    YEP! With proper training.
    Is it safe to buddy dive/team dive?!
    YEP! with proper training.
    Is it safe to solo dive?!
    YEP! with proper training.
    (I wonder how big a percentage of divers that think of themselves as better than average...!?!)
    (Time to go look in the mirror again!)
    Dive safe and have fun!

    I have been diving for a few years, and i came to decision after my expirience - that you dive almost every time alone. dive guide - doesnt care about you. your partner - you never know what he capable of. in Cuba lernd that you need your own regulator - because there wanted to give me broken one for a 40m dive - they told me that its not a problem (well for theme, maybe. not for me). after some more dives a learnd that i need a sidemount (2 tanks), 2 dive lights, 2 masks, a buoy - to be able to survive on my own in any case.... aaaand to help some one if i will be able to. My decision is - you NEED to learn to constract your own solo equipment and learn to dive alone - that way you actually can help your self and some one else, if cant be able to watch your self, how can you tell you can help another
    best regards!

Good dive partner extremely difficult to find. 99.9% of all the drivers out there who feel they are diving with the dive partner are really solo diving, they just don’t know it. Professional diver since 1991, so I have a few dives under my belt. Deepest saturation 700ft. Would I advocate solo diving? No. Would I ever solo dive? Yes, but rarely.....However!....
    There is a cliche used tongue in cheek; it goes like this: ''I am the second best diver in the North Sea'',,,,,''Because everyone else says he is the best diver''.
    The reality is there are good divers, and very bad ones, then there are ones who think they are very good but are bad or mediocre.
    There right away is the problem with advocating solo diving. It's a problem for these reasons:
    1. Bad or mediocre divers will make up excuses why they are o.k to do X,Y or Z, but the reality is it maybe way past their capability and they are kidding themselves. So for that reason alone there needs to be a training standard set and agreed upon and actually used by all professionals,,,,,,,,,and that has always been the buddy system.
    2. Using the excuse that an instructor with 6-8 divers is in effect solo diving is a nonsense argument to defend solo diving, i.e kidding themselves. The reality is that a instructor should only take 6-8 divers in water conditions where he ABSOLUTLEY knows his risk assessment will allow him and all students to egress the water, very quickly and safely, that is normally going to mean, no tide, warm water, perfect viz, shallow.
    3. The buddy system is used in many arenas, not just diving, the purpose is simple, Safety and Preservation of Life.
    4. Solo diving absolutely is possible, and safely, but the safety aspect is determined by the location, the weather, the tides, currents, depth, water temperature, visibility, redundancy, access to emergency services and tonnes of experience and training etc etc so assuming all those are perfect? your left with just a few scenarios you cannot control, heart attack, loss of consciousness for various reasons or knocking yourself out by hitting something or something hitting you, entanglement, catastrophic equipment failure. so after all that planning? Solo is Russian roulette and It is an individual choice based on risk.
    Solo diving is something that needs careful planning and to be avoided if possible, if your diving in warm clear viz fairly shallow, good conditions and somebody is close by then you might plan for a dive that is safe 'enough'. If you think that solo diving in cold, tidal, dark, murky, wrecks, deep is o.k?.......then hang up your fins your a liability to the emergency services.
    There is tonnes of things that can go wrong underwater, and on the surface, twice I have been washed out to sea, because of my bad planning? No! the surface cover lost us! and one of those was a full blown multi million pound all singing and dancing dive vessel, took 2 hours to find us, but see that little word there? 'US'. Me and my dive partner were able to support each other whilst we bobbing about the Sea, another hour and it would have been dark and 'we' would have been in a sticky situation, but two are always better than one.
    There is nothing big or clever about saying: ''I mainly dive solo because I am such a great diver!''
    And as for some of the comments here? sorry guys but as unpopular as this might sound, a professional diver will have the patience to allow a less experienced diver to dive within their limits and not encourage them to go beyond or be frustrated because they are limited by a partner with less experience, that is just selfish.
    A good diver will always advocate the buddy system, not because he cannot dive solo or doesn't have the expertise and equipment to dive solo, but because he is modest enough to admit there is no such thing as 'over the top' when it comes to safety. That is why there are professional divers and sports divers ;-)

    • @aterneroc
      @aterneroc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good explanation, I wonder why anybody or Achim replied you yet. Diving with your buddy is in reality diving "solo" with your buddy, but your buddy is close to you if you need help. Your buddy should have the skills and capabilities for that specific dive that you consider when planning the dive. Solo diving is not related with how good or profesional are you as a diver , it relates with non expected circunstances that help is needed, everybody could need help even the "best" and "most" experienced divers.

    • @helioxheo2586
      @helioxheo2586 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aterneroc I agree Alfredo, and that is why it makes common sense not to change the proven safest method in training curriculums, i.e buddy system should always be the starting benchmark for training and diving once qualified. Everything after that should only come with experience and proper assessment.

    • @bugman9787
      @bugman9787 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is up to the diver. Like you mention, a deep dive, or any bad conditions, or unknown places should preclude you from a solo dive. To me a 30 foot dive in calm water with no hazards should be ok. You have your redundant air supply and you are realistic about your ability. You drive your car solo, and lots of people flay a plane solo, there is no reason that you can’t dive solo if you approach it the right way. No, it is not for everyone, but is doable!

    Pilots fly solo, why can't divers dive solo...you must feel confident of your diving skills not cocky, you must know your equipment, have good dive skills...keep your dive shallow, double up on equipment, two lights, two knives, tow dive flag and SMB, keep it to one tank, know your dive sight, I check in with the local police department and check in again on the return...

    If you get entangled, it fine to have a buddy. My sister is diving at the same level like me. So we are good buddy team. She helped me several times to get out of fishing lines. But it was nothing I would not handle myself when diving alone. It just helped to save my gear from piercing or ripping.
    I general. I was taught to be self reliant diver. I can handle most of situations myself and when solo diving, I plan dive carefully just not to get me in a bad situation I would not handle. Stay away from lines, ropes, branches, good weather, enough air, well maintained gear, no deco dives when without surface support, etc.

    Solodiving discussion is tabu, and an endless one. I solodive and buddydives all year in coldwater. I got many great solodives and buddydives, but a few close on too disaster too in both types of dives.
    Some divers i know here is solodiving, but never talks loud about it. Myselfe is not afraid too say i am doing solodives whith or whitout my camera.
    As you said here, whath help could i give my Buddy when i want too shoot some good macropictures as could take minute off time too shoot if not my buddy is close too me. Its going both ways, i could get problem like my buddy could get problem. But some people is giving mee a hard time when i talk about it. But thats ok, people has different meanings about everything.
    The most of diving acsidents here in my country happens in the surface, some tragical one and some ends well, foult in the equipment in acsidents is very few.
    When diving solo or not, i always has my 7 liter stagebottle on me. My regular equipment is an 15 liter 232 bar steel cylinder whith 2 regulator, one regulator is whith a 1.8 meters longhose.
    Yes, it could go wrong any way on a dive, whith or whitout a buddy, but diving is like any other exstremesports like skydiving, basejumping and many other sports.
    This is just my uppinion about this, and i has respect of other people menings about this, but they should also respect my meaning of solodiving.

    As I’m in the process of getting OW certified I feel that as i become more experienced having a backup air source for self reliance in the event of being assigned a terrible insta-buddy I’ll have a better chance. I think having a buddy is still good. They can see problems with your gear and help you fix it. They provide another air source. They may be able to get you back to the surface if there’s a problem. Being self reliant, and diving the buddy system makes the most sense when done together.

  • @PeterBonacum
    @PeterBonacum 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Very honest discussion. Agree that solo is not preferred/ideal but neither is being a buddy to another person with vastly different skills, training, experience, dive philosophy, safety mindset, etc. Solo diving should only be considered when your personal training AND experience is extensive enough to allow you to be comfortable alone underwater. Reality is that outside of diving with people we know, solo diving is typically preferred vs. accepting the responsibility for a person we don't know.

    Hi and thank you for these always concrete discussions and demonstrations.
    I dive alone 80% of the time (no pair available or at a sufficient level), in fact the particularity of my solo dives is that I really respect my runtime, something which very often will be adaptable in a team. I am also paraglider and curiously in this sport it does not cause any problem to take all its responsibilities. A question, however, is there a return to the experience of the famous "Inflections of 'syncope'" under water responsible for drowning which pushes the community to flee the solo?

    I do and like solodiving a lot. Know your limit, have proper gear, train the skills and go home when you feel uncomfortable. But what i don't understand is the often seen idea of two regulators and a third one on a second safety tank. For me that's one too much. If you need your backup system, you should not have to choose first which one to take?! Take a main reg and a backup. Thats simpler and sufficient.

So I got my personal buddy with a fabulous lung (2 liter/300bar), that stays under my arm all the time and go with me everywhere. @@elmo319 1- You need a dive center with a 300 bar compressor. 2 - You need to insist with the staff to make sure you end up with 300 bars. A small tank like this is very sensible to temperature and after being «filled» it is very hot. When it cools, you can easily lose 80 to 100 bars. Yes... you can end up with just 200bars. So you need to wait for the tank to cool down, fill it up to 300 bars again and repeat a third time. It takes usually a couple of hours to be properly filled to 300bars. 3- In spite you don't use this tank and the only «leaks» are when you test the second stage prior to the dive, this is enough to need a refill every 20 dives or so, when it reaches 250bar.

    I want everyones attention if you do ever go solo diving make sure you chose a spot that is a shallowing incase if something does happen you can swim right back up within 5 seconds dont go diving deep down like an idiot I recommend sticking to 5 feet or 10 feet or hell go ask a friend to borrow his pool and get use to your gear in the pool practice get comfortable knowing all your gear as you learn and get to know ir equipment also im pretty sure your not gonna wanna dive with a partner for the rest of your life its good to dive alone at some point so that way your mind get use to it again stick to shallow end only ! Dont jump in no river or ocean or none of that pick a lake that u know just by standing on top u can clearly look down

    I think every dive eventually becomes a “solo”dive at some point, I think all diver should Learn to become a self reliant divers. I for instance practice it and have my redundancy source of air with me and want to get my solo diver certification.

    I agree to all of you who says that every dive is a solo dive. I always dive with another diver, a so called boddy, but we both know and agree that every dive is a solo dive. I’ve never been in the water alone, and i always dive next to another diver, but every dive is a solo dive, watch this!

    Videos by Popular Demand , poor man ;) , but every level of diver , even non-DIR cracks , knows the problems with inadequate , or unfocused , "allocated " buddies ,
