Championship Fighting: Explosive Punching and Aggressive Defense, by Jack Dempsey (Recorded book)

  • A recording of Jack Dempsey's excellent book "Championship Fighting: Explosive Punching and Aggressive Defense". Champters one through five. I plan on recording the entire book, including the illustrations, with video clips to demonstrate techniques as I go along.
This book is public domain and is available to read or download for free online. I highly recommend anyone interested in training, teaching, coaching, cornering, or competing in boxing, MMA, kickboxing, Muay Thai, even BJJ and wrestling... or any other combat sport as well as practical self-defense invest the time into studying this book and internalizing it's principles which transcend boxing. It really is one of the best books on martial arts ever written, regardless of style.
And for all the Bruce Lee fans out there- Mr. Lee himself owned this book, studied it, and borrowed heavily from it in the development of Jeet Kune Do. (Compare Dempsey's illustrations from Championship Fighting with Lee's from the Dao of JKD, and the resemblance is shocking.
Jack Dempsey set the bar higher for all boxers that followed and inspired many subsequent champions including Rocky Marciano and Mike Tyson. Tyson idolized Dempsey and modeled his aggressive high risk, high reward style on the template that Dempsey laid out decades previously.
Jack Dempsey is a personal hero of mine for many reasons, and I'm honored to give you my rendition of his words.
Stay tuned for the chapter by chapter break down to come.
Thanks for watching, now get out there and train!

It was Gene Tunney who studied other fighters and learned their weaknesses and came- up with strategies on how to beat them.
Gene Tunney only lost one fight-
to Harry Greb and he fought greb four more times after that, winning each time . That's in an era when there weren't referees and doctors stopping fights, if there was any chance that somebody might be getting hurt,
Tunney in the modern day never would have figured out how to beat greb because the fight would have been stopped with him getting the beating he was getting in that first fight and it's very likely his own boxing career wouldn't have gone anywhere after that had he not regained his American light heavyweight title back from greb in the rematch.

@Tino Gisondi I feel like you don't understand just how fuckin' scary weapons are. Once they're involved, there is no Mr nice guy and Dr Evil, there's just you and a person capable of ending your life. In that situation, you sure as hell try to talk them down first, which is exactly what Ramsey tried to recommend a while back. If you show them intent to kill, then now suddenly you've put them in the same place and they are gonna be attacking you WITH A KNIFE like their life depended on it. That is really a last-ditch resort.

Having trained in gyms around the world for years, I learned more from this classic, timeless book than I did from multiple trainers - across cultures and fighting styles. It is not only a crystal clear break down of critical punching fundamentals, but insight into the corruption of all fighting businesses, as still seen in MMA and strip malls across America, 70 years after its publication. Mr. Dempsey first warns about the terrible dangers of street fights, but not while crying about weapons?! Instead, he teaches the skill of quickly knocking someone out with either hand in self defense if a fight is inevitable. An old school, trained boxer can still do this quickly and efficiently today - at least as quickly as someone can brandish a weapon outside a bar on a sidewalk and long before you Kung Fu Panda types complete your mid-air Flying Omaplatas. Yes, "all fights do go to the ground" - especially when a shopping mall MMA guy is unconscious on the sidewalk from the techniques so beautifully explained in this book.

It parallels politicians and legislators who don't have backgrounds in anything around science, engineering or math making decisions that involve all those things
like assuming if everybody had electric cars, it would be some "free lunch"
they don't even know what a kilowatt is without googling it
so they seem to feel that electricity, magically appears out of nowhere behind sheetrock where a receptacle's mounted and these incompetent but arrogant- buffoons make decisions affecting how millions of people have to live each day.

My younger brother and my second SO taught me the importance of using bodyweight. The first cos he was fit as f@#k, but I'd overcome him through sheer weight, being the b@stard I was, and us having regular fights. The second, cos moving a heavy weight around ain't so easy, especially when it's angry (thank you Akido). Nowadays, I'm c.180lbs, and that's perfect if you ask me. Yeah, in my younger, fitter days I was c. 154 (5'10"), which is great for climbing mountains , but not so good one on one; as I learnt, working in a factory, where the big humungous women would have a lot of fun mucking me about, all in a good natured way of course.
