    to this day i don't understand the knight, needle and now question

    • @CarlosFernandez-fh1lj
      @CarlosFernandez-fh1lj หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The question was about words which had similar prefix pronunciation (knight/needle). Starting with an “n” sound. Geoff answered as if the question asked what words sound the same in their entirety (knight/kite). Geoff focused on the suffix sound of “ite/ight.” “Now” grammatically could be correct, but for some reason the only correct answer was needle.

      Knight is /naɪt/, Needle is /'ni:dəl and now is /naʊ/. I answered this above, but actually needle is the wrong answer. The phonetic transcription has knight and now beginning with the same sound only. They also don't teach this in k12 so technically needle and now should still both be the correct answer. Unless teachers have just given up (which kinda think they have to be honest)

    • @AzureRoxe
      @AzureRoxe 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Knight only had one correct answer and it was Needle. Now does not have a similar sound to Knight compared to Needle. Say the words and you'd notice that.

    • @sirprintalot
      @sirprintalot 10 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Just 'saying the words' doesn't work as everyone has different accents. For me, they all sound the same. For someone else, all three words may start with completely different sounds. I have taught phonics and you teach 'kn___' words, and 'n___' words. Needle and Now are too similar for there to be a correct answer.

      The letter "J" is indeed pronounced like 'zhee' and sounds like a "G." Now on the other hand, "G" in French is pronounced 'jay' to sound like "J." It's basically the opposite in France.

  • @mattmiller1335
    @mattmiller1335 10 ปีที่แล้ว +118

    As someone who's training to be a Speech Language Pathologist, that Needle/Now question was total bullshit. Both have the phonemic /n/ sound, exactly the same as the first sound in knight.

    • @Kazutoification
      @Kazutoification 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the question was asking for the actual sound from the first letter and vowel. So, needle has a 'neee' sound and now has a 'nuh' sound. Knight also has a 'nuh' sound. Perhaps that's what the question was asking.

    • @feralcatgirl
      @feralcatgirl 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      knight: /naɪt/
      needle: /niːdl/
      now: /naʊ/
      yeah, i think 'now' should have been the correct answer as well.

    • @MurdocBack
      @MurdocBack 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Knight and needle has a "e/i" pronunciation after the "n" sound, whilst now has a more "a" related pronunciation. This makes "needle", sound more like "knight" than "now".
      So for the official American English language, needle would be the most likely candidate.

    • @tibschris

    • @endzordays
      @endzordays 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Knight is /naɪt/, Needle is /'ni:dəl and now is /naʊ/. That's the phonetic transcription for each of those 3 words. Needle is actually the wrong answer because it's phonetic transcription is /'n where as now perfectly matches knight with /n. However they definitely aren't teaching phonetic transcription to k12 students so that entire question is garbage as the answer should be now and needle.

      We were meant to learn Spanish, actually, but after fifth grade they cut it.
      So I can believe that it could go both ways--it depends on the region and how much the local government views the education budget as less of an investment and more of a till to reach into whenever they want to cut taxes to stir up base support.

      You have to read it as being spelt by an English speaker though. «J» is pronounced 'ji' which in English terms is the sound of the 's' in 'measure' and the 'long E' sound, so 'zhee' would be a sensible way to spell it phonetically. How would you have wanted them to spell it?

    So many problems with this game.
    1. It has unreleastic expectations of school kids. What American 1st Grader knows French? I finished High School and I don't know French. The game thinks 2nd Graders should know all the state shapes and their border relations, yet I didn't learn that till 4th grade. And 5th Graders should know how big the moons of Jupiter are? I didn't even study ANY kind of Astronomy until 8th Grade.
    2. Buggy. The "Knight" question proves that.
    3. It's subjective. "Who had the first great Navy in the Mediterranean?" What defines "great"? Is it relative to the rest of the region, in which case 2 military ships can mean great? Is there a set number of ships? Is it based on number of ships, quality of ships, or quality of soldiers? How organized a command structure do you need to be "great"?
    This is why I stopped watching the show long ago. It's so stupid.

    • @VolvagiasBlaze
      @VolvagiasBlaze 8 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      I know right, that last question alone had 3 possible answers! Phoenicia was the first to have a vast ammount of ships, but most of them were used for commerce, so i don´t know if you could consider them a navy. Greece was the first to have a legit naval army capable of warding off invaders. And Italy (technically Rome, but they want countries) had the first navy that was used to conquer on a large scale. Man fuck this shit.

      Minoans were far before Phoenicians, if they were going to go down the semantics route (as they did) then it should have been the Minoans. But no, the people who made the game are even dumber than 5th graders, so I guess I can't expect that much from them.

    I couldn't handle that calendar question. Just look at it. For one, the number of days in JUNE has NOTHING to do with the question. Secondly, you can just simply look at the answers. You have four answers, all of which are multiples of 7. You're asked for the THIRD Wednesday.

      Actually the number of days in June DOES matter, at least determining whether it has 30 or 31 days, to then determine how many days May has. If May 3rd falls on wednesday, and may has 31 days, then June 1st falls on a thursday so answer is 21st. But if May has 30 days, june 1st is a wednesday, thus the third wednesday is the 15th.

      That is the part of the question you /don't/ need to read, because that's stating a fact. Gavin starts reading, realises he knows the fact, then moves on to the question part of the question. I think that saying it can cure cancer takes it a little too far. I know you didn't mean to make it offensive, but just think a little more about what you say in comments. I hope that you will take this into consideration.

    • @Nyrata
      @Nyrata 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Trust me, I'm always very careful when posting comments online, if only because I'm not a native speaker and every word I choose I think about if it's right or wrong in context. I don't see anything offensive about my comment. Not only is the focus of it clearly positive, it doesn't begin to compare to all the rape and death threats and curses people post daily on all kinds of outlets. True, as horrible as it is, cancer is a real thing. But nowhere did I mitigate cancer or it's effects; instead I focussed on the extreme positive effect of Geoff's laugh. Happiness can cure mental hurt and that too can effect a person's physical health. Those who get depressed during the process of fighting cancer are more likely to stay sick longer, or never get better at all, compared to those who have a fighter-mentality. I'm sure most people can feel that positivity which fuels a good attitude in this video. So, in a sense, there is truth in my comment.
      And, some well-meant friendly advise... if you really found that comment offensive, I suggest you never travel to the Low Countries. People wish all kinds of horrible deaths and diseases upon each other every day. Unless you can handle a healthy daily dose of 'I hope you get the typhus and die in a ditch', you might wanna stay away...

      Mushroom Smuggler Well the first episode of "Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader" aired in February of 2007. The first episode of"Are you Smarter than a 10 Year Old" aired in October of 2007. So actually you're watching the remake. Whether it's shitty or not is your opinion though.

    Phonecia was a nation? I suppose if you take the broadest possible definition of the word "nation," as a large ethnically similar community of people.... the more proper definition of "nation" includes generally accepted set national boundaries, and a more steady, organized form of government.... but whatever, Jeff Foxworthy says it's a nation so it must be.

      Omg, it's just subtraction. Look, I'll explain it to you. There's 832 total games and 400-something wins. So to figure out the total losses, subtract 400-something from 832. Then subtract the losses from the wins. That's so easy, a 1st grader could do it

      My father got a Minor's in Math and a Bachelor's in Astrophysics.
      Growing up I had a better Math teacher in him than any of the paid teachers from school. My brain also shut off on the Math question.
      Fuck you guys.
