  • Wildlife habitat improvement is ever evolving. Most land managers are always trying to improve/tweak their farm as is the case with Tom on Project 17. Four years ago, he converted 17 acres of production ag into wildlife habitat and has learned some things through that time. Now it's time to do some of those tweaks and see the wildlife/whitetail response.

Love the update and can’t wait to see the results. Gives me some hope on my old pasture restoration some day soon. Love seeing Bo. Grand babies are the best.

Honestly, I have watched less of your channel since this project started because of the direction you were heading with the grass establishment; however, I’ve periodically tuned in to catch updates for this site. I can appreciate the learning curve when it comes to managing wildlife habitat for various species, so I’m glad you’ve reviewed the literature and sought guidance from biologists. There are lots of good resources out there from people who hope to help others eliminate the potential for mistakes. I believe the diverse mix of natives is the way to go. I’ll keep tuning in to see the progress in the future. Keep it up!

Excited for an end of Summer update on this! I recently sprayed off my front yard, and planted it into a clover blend. With the drought this year in MN, it came up in a fairly weak stand....But, in the other areas, a multitude of "Weeds" grew up. Lots of ragweed and others. People always say "Seesh! You need to mow!"......until they see all the pollinators, toads, frogs, rabbits and small critters that now can call my yard home. :)

A growing season burn followed by a post application of a grass-specific herbicide reduced my grass by 75%. Broadcast your forb species right after the burn. Mimics what grazing did on the Grand Prairie, etc.

Love the design and seeing this project continue. Adding some shrub thickets could encourage more deer bedding later in the year. Arrowwood, dogwood, sumac come to mind looking at that field.

Ok first, I love watching your work. I’ve got a farm in eastern NE where I planted a 20 acre block of native some six years ago. Same issues. Planted thick and now it’s too thick to walk through. Burned once and no sheds. I’m planning on burning this spring and discing all to thin, spraying or something like what you have done. Any chance we could talk for a short spell on the phone???

I love the change. I'm very happy that I only did strips of switch in a conversion that I did because the diversity has exploded the wildlife.
