Karen Carpenter,s voice once made me cry as a little 5 yr old in the early 70,s. So did this voice when I first heard it 1990. Have not heard it in 27 yrs!
I saw them play this song at the Roxy in Los Angeles shortly after it came out in 1990. Harriet sounds just like this in person. I agree on Karen. You should hear the Carpenters 1975 version of "Desperado", if possible listen to the entire Horizon album from that year. Karen left us too soon.
Wow, all the way back to 1990. Feels like yesterday. I think I was the only guy in the US that liked this band back in the day. True art stands the test of time.
@@peppermint740 I miss the simple authenticity of artists just playing their music. No gimmicks. No politics. Just the music. How the heck did we lose the whole point of the exercise?
since i've heard this song like 7 years ago at a young age, it forever changed me, and since I didn't understand lyrics at that time because english is not my first language, it just sounded like the humming of a mother, this song just screams nostalgia for me
this song for some certain reason always makes me cry so much i listen over and over again and makes me so sad and melancholic i can't control myself and always break on tears...i don't know why but this song touched very deeply inside of me .sort of memories come to my mind and feel like there's no much rime left and really the story will end.. everyone of us we have story ....sorry im still crying ...
ivan espindola I can relate and can imagine how you feel deep inside as I go through pain and agony every time I here this song. Even as how beautiful Harriet's voice is I break down do to a terrible break up that ment the world to me. Stay strong and try to see the brighter side of it my friend.
It’s a very, very, very powerfully sad song: a fitting way to express the anguish of having a deep, happy, joyous relationship come undone, especially for outside circumstances. One of the many risks of experiencing profound, intense love is that it enables profound, intense heartbreak-the kind of emotional pain that either kills you or deeply scars you for life.
Heard this for the first time in a record store when the album had just been released. The singer's voice grabbed my ear immediately! I wasnt at all surprised when I saw the video for the first time and she was as lovely as she sounded. If this is not three minutes of pure timelessness, I don't know what is. 'Nuff said.
The rambling begins then her voice then all the meaningful lyrics still resonate deep for me. Like any really good song, it speaks to you, like it's just about your life.
This is undoubtedly the album version of this song. Anyone who's listened to it since it came out should recognize it. No electric guitar on stage, no live drums have ever sounded like this ... it's the exact same...also, it's the exact same... :)
Yes, seems to be playback, just like Top of the Pops. I was hoping to hear it live...I guess that is the reason why "Live" is in quotation marks in the title.
Genuinely wasn’t sure if she miming this for the first watch. One of the best vocal performances I’ve watched on TH-cam…what a gorgeous voice and a gorgeous song
Self-titled album? They had three albums, none of them called "The Sundays." Their first album, "Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic," is the one that includes this song. Is that the one you mean?
It's one of my all time favorite songs and i love the Sundays and Harriet Wheeler's voice . yet, It maybe on live tv but i doubt seriously if they were playing and singing live .
Love seeing Harriett in this beautiful outfit. More colors and different belt. Takes me back to high school feelings. Hadn’t seen this video. Hope there’s more treasures still out there. Thanks
Una voz única, poderosa, dulce, sublime, Nunca me cansaré de escuchar esta canción. Dios!! es una obra maestra, por supuesto sólo podía ser cantada por ella .🙏 Me emociono siempre 😢
Alonzo, When "The Sundays" came to the attention of the assorted music press in England they were described as being a hybrid of "The Smiths" guitar sound and "The Cocteau Twins" vocals. So, you are not to be blamed for looking in the 'Cocteau' or 'TMC' direction.
She's actually not. Everyone is playing correctly, and if you watch other live versions of this, she's perfect. Small subtleties if you listen closely as well. They were very good, and she's absolutely incredible.
Thanks to whoever found this video. Maybe someday we will find more live footage of our favorite 90s band: The Sundays. It's rare to see Harriett in colorful clothing besides her black one piece top. She is so beautiful!!
Harriet is 60 this year, with kids older than i was when this came out. No doubt she is still beautiful but i would rather keep my memories of her and the band in their prime and as a reminder of just how good the 90's were.
The german broadcast series this is taken from was called "LIVE aus dem Alabama" And if you wonder why the audience seems to be "Crappy"... Just read "Live aus dem Albama" again... Bands were supposed to play LIVE not PLAYBACK, so you might have felt had facing this. That was a crappy comment as well, I think. That's what I am! Cheers!
Lovely story I heard about a live gig by The Sundays. A male patron up the front randomly asked Harriet Wheeler to marry him. She couldn't sing the next line of the song because she was laughing so much!
Hi ya'll. There are numerous reasons why they, television shows, used to do this, and sadly some still do. 1. insurance. (record company not having faith in the bands ability to play live - and they want the best sound (album) of the single so people will buy ($) it. 2. Technology. Some studios had good equipment, some had bad, some were missing a few pieces, some had great camera but bad audio, etc... 3. Schedule - If the artist(s) played/sang 7 hours ago at a 2 hour concert- then had to pack-up, take the bus 1 hour to next hotel, check-in, shower - bed for 2 hours - then wake-up early to bus again to the tv studio - then sing it perfectly again.... Some have actually put it in their contract that they simply can not do back to back performances. The band RUSH just recently (their last / past tour) (at age 60 x the 3 of them) told the record company / touring insurance co' that they can not do back to back shows anymore (keeping in mind not only their age, but the type of music they play and Geddy (singer)'s high range, so much equipment, 3 hour show, etc). 4 (and a half) - The tv show's upper people (way at the top) are worried about having a bad performance blamed on their show / channel, etc... (the list actually continues). Biggest reason is usually money - record company insists on the best 'performance'. You can have the best musicians ON, and they will still be asked to lip-synch or simply 'play along to it' - then the audio the studio uses is (or mostly) the album version. These days it is far more rare (finally!) - and the better the band, the more chance of them actually playing. :) Check out RUSH on 'the Colbert report'. :)
Leonard Paz It’ll be the TV producers decision, not the band. It was especially common in the 80s and 90s. I remember Mark Hollis from Talk Talk deliberately botched lipped synced performances to make it obvious they weren’t playing live, in protest.
