    While I'm not familiar with this tune, I'm quite sure its name's spelling is a misinterpretation or reinterpretation of a local landmark here in Dallas, Texas: "Deep Ellum" (so named for the way locals pronounced Elm Street). Its reputation in various portions of Dallas's history totally fits with the message of the song. :)

      Actually its a misspelling. This is an old traditional tune about the neighborhood you are familiar with. Many recording of this song have been done beginning in the 1930's during the great depression.
