  • One of the most enjoyable highlights at this year’s HSR Classic 24 at Daytona presented by IMSA was the appearance of the famed Holbert HR1 Porsche 962. This was the first 962 not built by the Porsche Factory and was ultimately the most successful non-factory built 962/962C. This car was built at the Holbert Racing shops in Warrington, Pennsylvania and many of those who had a hand in its creation were on hand.
Driving the car at Daytona was Derek Bell who won 16 races driving with or for Al Holbert. Joining Derek in the cockpit were his son Justin, Gunnar Jeannette, Todd Holbert, (son of the late Al Holbert), and the car’s owner Rodrigo Sales.
For our Jim Roller it was a walk down memory lane and a chance to see some old friends.

I was at the Charlotte Camel GT and got to speak to Al and Derek. Two of my racing hero’s and two really nice guys that would take time to talk to fans. Rest In Peace Al Holbert. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I met Derek Bell at the Charlotte Camel GT race in the Pitts. Such a nice man and great racer. I wanted to say hello to Al Holbert but he was being interviewed by TV newsmen. Those were great days in racing. Al And Derek were a force to be reckoned with in IMSA.

I remember having a poster of this car up in my bedroom. Most times, it dominated the competition! Holbert & Bell . . . . Wow!!!

Löwenbräu must have pumped some Oktoberfestrevenues into that track engagement. It is always amazing to me how these Swabian top racers have been rebuild, modified and tuned almost everywhere on the planet. Thankyou.

Saw them race many times at Lime Rock Park, not to mention all the IMSA races on TV during that time frame.

I was at Lime Rock in 1984. That was the year the 962 debuted. The year before he was racing in the CRC March-Porsche. Sarel Van Der Merwe won in 84 with the Kreepy Krauly March Porsche. Al won in 83.
