Have done about 4000 km on mine so far without drama. Seems to leak a bit of oil maybe but smooth and solid. After watching this video I have new respect for both design and manufacture. Wow.
Been commuting on an 11 Alfine Genesis for a few months now and in 1000miles I have had 3 minor mid shifts under light load and barely discernible at all. A bit spongy on set off for about 1/8 of a crank and then feels rock solid. Nice and quiet too.
Even the little lower category Nexus i8 of this masterpiece is working fine and reliable since 15000 km in our all seasons used pedelecs. Many people commenting negative have no clue. Of cause it's not made for competive sports and supposed to serve torque up to 60 Nm but for that it's made for it's just excellent when you regulary doing each 5000 km maintenance by a person who knows what to do.
This video would have been a lot more useful if the narrator spent his time describing the actual flow of power from sprocket to hub instead of wasting it on repeating the marketing BS over and over ("the Shimano Alfine: fashionable, sleek and sporty!")
I have Nexus gear box hub and it looks pretty similar to alfine. I have disassembled and assembled it and you have right - it is complicated. But not impossible if you have good video tutorial which show how to put parts together. :)
thanks, nice video to help understand the ways these paws, clutch, and planetary gears work! I needed that to service my 6 years old Nexus 8 that is si slipping/ missing lately..
They dont mention that the Alfine 11 is a pig to stop jumping. Having pushed three more gears into the same size hub tolerances as a result are lower. Trying to adjust it to stop jumping is like attempting to stand a pencil on it's point. Perfect adjustment is NOT where the yellow dot's line up. The best you do is reduce it to a minimum by trial and error which in my A11 is about once in every thirty shifts. I have a Nexus 8 speed that has never jumped.
@@fractalofgod6324 The 8-speed is the better choice in every way. If you want that hub for commuting / touring you gain nothing since the three more gears extend the range on the long end which you will almost never use.
Very interesting animation! Funnily enough considering the target consumer is the commuter, the content of this video is waaaaay outside their comfort zone. Who's it for??
I want one with a belt drive for ultra low maintenance. Seeing as how I would be limited to only one front gear, what Shimano dropbar shifter should I get for the left hand side? One that has the brake only. I want the di2 for the right.
I just had this idea for greatly simplified internal hub gearing: ...../ >< ......\ You just use a a small diameter geared cone on the chainside (left) that can slide up and down a large geared cone on the drive side (wheel, right) using a friction shifter .. ??? Why isn't this the greatest idea ever? 😊
Shimano's stuff is tough & durable, usually. Is Alfine as durable as Rohloff ? Or reduce the requirements, 2-5000 km distance Alfine can have not any problems to happen? I would like to try a internal hub gears system, but Rohloff is too expensive
Of course it isn't as durable as a Rohloff. But, the Alfina doesn't cost $1500. Although, a Rohloff will last you the rest of your life. Cheaper in the long run.
how hard is to make this 130 mm, and add a couple of spacers for wider range of use; than having to hack it ?? the Rohloff is way too expensive to just test for fun
This is the future of bikes. Add Gate's carbon belt and you have a perfect non-maintenance bike. I can't wait to get rid of the dirty drive set. Hope to enjoy this wonder soon.
A hub needing an oil-change once or twice a year is not what I would call "maintainance-free". And BTW: That belt will get dirty like any old chain from the leakage.
I have used and abused the 7- and 8-gear hubs for decades and love them (except the first Inter-7 which had pathetic efficiency) but sorry Shimano the 11-gear Alfine is anything but "..fine" That hub is CRAP! 1.) The internal gearing is much too long, and it's not allowed to compensate with shorter input gearing than 38/21. So the added range compared with the 8-gear hub is wasted. You just get three additional longer gears you will almost never use instead of gears below 2m which would have been useful on uphills with touring-baggage. 2.) Quality issues! I had serious trouble with the hub skipping/slipping gears and occationally letting the pedal fall through more than a quarter turn which once lead to a painful crash with extensive grazings on my left (from upper arm to wrist and knee to ankle). This skipping is a known problem and regulary discussed in bike-forums, but totally ignored by Shimano. 3.) Quality issue, seconds: My Alfine-11 now busted a bearing in addition the the above problems, which not only made the crank drop completey but also left me with a wobbly rear wheel (a few mm play in the rear axle) barely able to keep control to stop the bike without crashing another time. I'm done whith this heap of junk and going back to 8-speed. And before you ask: YES - that hub has been serviced and adjusted correctly to specifications. This did not keep it from and destroying itself in just over 4.500km I'm thinking of personally slamming that busted Alfine-11 on one of the marketing-reps desk at Paul Lange next time I'm in Stuttgart.
Thank you for your comment. My Alfine-11 is total loss, even I expect, with only view kilometers. Maybe 2-4000. (Bought the bike used) But failed to maintain it properly. Reading, if again investing in Alfine-11 makes sense, or if I should switch to Alfine-8. I think, you helped me. @@latinumbavariae @BlackZero RS mentions 4 comments below the NuVinchi CVP. Did you hear of it? How to compare it with alfine 8? Thanks for your advice.
@@danielbieling Andreas Oehler did some efiiciency-measurements on the most common hubgears, and comes to the conclusion that the NuVinci is not the best choice strong riders. Not surprising since the Nuvinci, like most CVT, relys on oilshear for transmitting forces thus allowing slippage and more so with higher loads. Assuming that you are German too you can read his article at: fahrradzukunft.de/17/wirkungsgradmessungen-an-nabenschaltungen-2/ Don't get too excited about the comparison between the Alfine-8 and Alfine-11. No, there are steel races inside the aluminum hub shell. All the bearings are exclusively steel-on-steel.
