In much of the Nordic countries including the British Isles and Northern Europe, many if not most of the laymen were still quite pagan. The Arthurian legends still hadn't even been written yet. Beowulf and Siegfried were the most common stories of morality across England and Germania.
@Alfred5555 No they weren't, they were overwhelmingly monotheistic Christians. Paganism was widely abandoned by North Europeans upon prolonged contact with Christianity.
@@kapitankapital6580 The time of Alfred the Great was not really after prolonged contact with Christianity though. You're making the typical bias historian mistake of thinking that when the elites had converted, that means all the common folk had done so also. The reality being that it wouldn't be about another 1000 years until the average common person gave a toss what the King himself thought about things. It's simply a matter of actual history. The common people couldn't read Latin or Greek, most couldn't read at all. People relied on traditional stories, and bards to spread information. We today are keenly aware of how syncretised and warped Biblical Christianity is when set in various cultures, all the festivals, celebrations, etc, are plainly Christianisation of previously existing festivals, the same is true of the way passages are told, the style and ethos of national churches, etc. We can see all this obviously in current day by just looking around us. However the reason for this is because there never was a magical time when the world just switched to Christianity over night and left everything else behind. It literally took best part of a 1000 years, and then came the Renaissance anyway which only revived all the old stories, traditions and beliefs of the pagan world, and they've never really gone away again since. That being said, I didn't say it was as if in the 1300s you could readily find a temple to Wodan or people wearing Thor's Hammers and such, of course the culture became Christian, but it is the reality that it happen very gradually, writings and archaeology simply show this, common people were conscious of their traditional informal pagan ways being merged with a more formal religion, place names were still named after Norse gods, the days of the week are still happily in honour of pagan gods, etc. Like I said, at the time of Alfred the Great, the Arthurian legend still wouldn't be written for another few centuries, Beowulf would of been the primary most common story known, all the Norse sagas still hadn't been recorded to paper for many centuries yet. The point being, these ancient people weren't dumb, they knew Christianity was a foreign thing, new to them, and they didn't see their paganism as an alternative religion to be dropped in favour of Christ, they saw it as themselves, just their history and tradition, and thus, expectedly, much of that never really went away. We could compare it to the Spanish Empire. Today South America is famously Catholic, but they still maintain plenty of their historic traditions and relatively common knowledge of their culture, and that was a situation where the Christians were in the early modern era, and the natives were largely in the stone age. So compare that to a situation where the Christians were no more advanced than the natives, and the natives in fact were famous for being closely related to the Gothic army that had conquered Rome and essentially ruled the dark ages. Do you really think it was as simple as everyone suddenly being Christian with zero knowledge or thought of their own revered culture overnight? Again, plenty of archaeology and writings show that it wasn't. You're also presumably mistaking the direct Christian efforts by churches to break tradition and erase history, with some sort of mass movement of conversion. This is a myth, it was just zealots being zealots, which is very well recorded in late Rome during the rise of Christianity. Acts that I imagine often the Church as a whole, and obviously the common people, thought was extreme and morally wrong.
@@Alfred5555 that's a lot of words for "I don't know what syncretism means". The reason why it's a common view among historians is because it's true; yes ordinary people couldn't read Latin or Greek but they did go to church, pray to God and baptise their children. You talk about the "evidence" while ignoring the overwhelming amount of it that disproves your hypothesis; not only were there no shrines to Wodan in the 14th Century, there were no shrines to Wodan in the 10th Century, or the 9th, or the 8th. We have a vast amount of Christian imagery from this time, from weapons to architecture to art, as well as plenty of accounts of mass baptisms and other forms of religious conversion. And by the way, on the subject of dates Alfred the Great ruled 200 years after England had been Christianised, which I would say constitutes "prolonged exposure". On the subject of the days of the week, this was simply the translation into Germanic languages of the Roman seven-day week (that was officially adopted, by the way, by Emperor Constantine, a Christian). They were not invented by imaginary 8th Century English pagans. In fact, this weekday nomenclature would have been mostly adopted by those who interacted with Roman institutions on a daily basis; in other words, Christians. As for place names, do I even need to explain that? Not everybody in Kidderminster is a Christian... Next time if you think you've come up with a single piece of evidence that debunks the settled academic consensus on a given topic, I suggest you do a little bit more research on it. I’ve always wondered what you in the Eastern Church were chanting during the liturgies - nice to hear it in English. Very similar to the Latin Mass, as it turns out.
O holy right-believing Alfred, great king of Wessex and father of the English nation, hear our supplication. Thou hast shown us an indelible example of courage and faith in the marshes of Æthelney, when all England was suffering the depredation of the heathen Danes. Thou didst build up the defenses of thy kingdom as thou didst also strive to increase the Christian Faith in thy kingly heart, showing an example of true wisdom to friend and foe alike; enlightening thy people, showing mercy to thy vanquished foes, wisely preparing for war, but striving always for a holy peace. Thou didst love learning and render into English many holy books, sending them out to all thy people, raising up their minds and hearts in the light of true knowledge. Thou didst renew the ancient laws of England, becoming a new Justinian, showing an example of the righteous judgement required by God of all who are in seats of power. We, thy spiritual children in America, ask now thy strong intercession before the King of kings; help us in our time of trouble. Be like Elijah and grant us a double portion of thy spirit that thirsted after these virtues of courage, faith, steadfastness in the face of uncertainty and fear, the love of the Lord that bringeth holy wisdom, and righteous and merciful judgement in the fear of God. O Alfred, wise king, do thou entreat Him to guide us steadily, as He guided thee, and to grant order, justice, peace, and tranquility to our native land. In the name of the Father to Whom thou drawest nearer every day, the Son Whose love thou didst teach to all, and the Holy Spirit Who fillest thy heart, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. ☦

I’m not Anglo-Catholic, I’m Anglo-Orthodox. I won’t abandon my Church, I’d prefer to fight the heresy from within. My parish refuses LGBT issues, refuses female priests and bishops, ignores the heretical orders from Canterbury and York. The Anglican Church was an attempt to return to Pre-Augustine of Canterbury Christianity in Britain. I don’t get Anglicans attempting to reconcile with the Pope in Rome. Pray for me, pray for the devout nicene and apostolic faithful still in the Anglican Church.
I thought the true vision of the Anglican church came to the fore through Cromwell and the Puritans? It was largely just a political tool until then when the English people actually got involved with it. And started doing things like banning journalists and activist entertainment and hedonistic fun in general during times of war because it was, to paraphrase "disgraceful to be playing games and follies while the nation was at war". Those people won the war by the way, several times consecutively. Almost like a divine right, you might say?
@@Alfred5555You're way off... The Puritans would have abhorred the Orthodox Church- from veneration of saints to icons. It's why low Church Anglicans tend to have chapels even devoid of a cross and have a said rather than sung mass etc.
@@Manpayi Way off? Did you even read my comment? That's what I was saying, that what many would call the "truest form" of the Anglican Church, the context that it still largely exists within, the church of Cromwell and Puritans, was very different to an Eastern Orthodox church. That's why Anglo-Orthodox, in relation to your later reference to Anglicanism, seemed like an oxymoronic term to me. Thinking chronologically. Henry VIII founds the Anglican church, it was not some sort of devote Orthodox return to tradition under him. Then Elizabeth I confirmed it as a nominally Protestant church. But when it became what we commonly think of as "Anglican", high-church, low-church, etc, that was a little later with Cromwell, and as you say, Cromwell and Puritans would have criticisms of Orthodoxy.
The Church of England almost joined Orthodoxy back in the 19th century or early 20th century if I'm not mistaken. Well, no chance that's gonna happen now, considering everything that's going on. Maybe GAFCON? (wishful thinking)

Alfred the Great, King of the West Saxons and then King of the Anglo Saxons, lead the successful defence of England against the pagan Danes on numerous occasions and set in stone the path for English unification.

No, he is Alfred the Great (Alfred is a pagan name meaning Alf-read, Elf read, meaning, taught by elves), King of Anglo-Saxons, and only English King honoured as the Great. He was more like a proto-Anglican. In his sphere of influence, the Pope in Rome was the primary spiritual leader, with further away patriarchs being seen as peers rather than superiors who could anoint him with any authority, unlike Pope Leo IV who may have anointed him at one point, and did anoint other kings. Alfred the Great pushed for his people to all be educated and to read texts in English rather than Latin, even translating many clerical texts to English, an act that over 500 years later would contribute to the protestant reformation.

England existed a good while before the great schism so you could argue that it was Western “Orthodox” for a good while.
I’ve always wondered what you in the Eastern Church were chanting during the liturgies - nice to hear it in English. Very similar to the Latin Mass, as it turns out.
Ah yes. The Anglican Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
@Wisdom of a Recluse no. England is Anglican
You snuck in a little Greek Orthodox in the middle there, dint cha?
Amen. ☦
amen!
Thank you for your prayer. I feel it too & need that strength, courage & steadfastness.
Lord have mercy.

Thank you so much for this. Any chance of Ireland next? Is there enough material out there?
Anglo-Bro says thanks for this 😍
Perhaps in another universe, England remained in the Orthodox Communion. That would be a fascinating topic for an alternate history.
The Church of England almost joined Orthodoxy back in the 19th century or early 20th century if I'm not mistaken. Well, no chance that's gonna happen now, considering everything that's going on. Maybe GAFCON? (wishful thinking)

As much as I would love it to be the case, Alfred has not been canonised (yet)
Yes he has
He can still be venerated. Considering he was the sole defender of a Christian Kingdom from hordes of pagan invaders and promoted seminary education he is worthy of veneration. Plus he converted the Viking pagan king Guthrum (Æthelstan).
Fr Seraphim Rose is also not canonised yet. But that doesnt mean we should ignore him. We can still ask him to pray for us. The same goes for Alfred.

FR. APOSTOLOS HILL!!
Was St. Alfred Orthodox ☦ ???
@@Alfred5555 thanks!
He was Western-Orthodox, just like the rest of Northern and Western Europe before the great Schism.
@@Alfred5555 Having a pagan name doesn't mean much, Christianity has always allowed its followers to keep their own culture which includes (most) pagan names. Also, although Alfred literally means taught by elves, it means wise so it would still be an acceptable name for a Christian
