How To Tune 808 Samples Properly

  • No more out of tune 808s! Here's how to tune 808 samples properly.
    Try or buy Cableguys plugins: www.cableguys....
    What’s the biggest rookie mistake you can make as a beatmaker? Out of tune 808s, of course! Here’s a foolproof way to get your 808 samples in key.
    First, identify the root key of your song. I like to use a basic sawtooth synth and play along until I hit the root note.
    Then try loading a tuner plugin on your 808. But beware… 808 samples often have pitchbends baked in, so tuners can be wrong.
    My foolproof method is to play the 808 over a sawtooth C note, then transpose the 808 by ear to C.
    If the 808 is too deep to hear its pitch clearly, distort it for more tone.
    Then, once tuned to C, play a MIDI riff in the key of your song. Job done!

    I think you forgot that trap producers quite obviously don’t have ears 💀

    for me, certain saturators/drives make the 808 sound out of tune at low volumes.
    it might be because distortion messes with harmonics?

    • @Cableguys
      @Cableguys  ปีที่แล้ว +22

      It’s likely more that the 808 was out of tune to begin with, and the saturation is making that more audible.
      Basic saturation/drive doesn’t move the harmonics up or down - it just generates new harmonics, and changes the levels of the harmonics that are there. So if it sounds out of tune after distorting, the 808 was likely out of tune before too, and the distortion has just highlighted it - which is the idea of this technique.
      Also, the fact that you say “at low volumes” points to a perception issue.
      However, distorting too much of the upper harmonics can sound discordant, especially if the sound has non-harmonic resonant overtones. Bass guitar, for example, usually has some weird constant ringing tones. So you need to make sure that lots of the fundamental is saturated.
      Or maybe the plugin is modelling some weird tube resonances - it’s best to use a basic distortion algorithm in this case.
      Hope this helps!

      Just go some octaves up, tune it and go back

    • @JohnnyOat
      @JohnnyOat ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PedroPauloAmorim That usually works but pitching it up an octave can shorten the pitch bend and make it sound like it's a different note - Cableguys mentions this in another video. Distorting it is more accurate.

    Today I found a way to tune my 808, put a reverb on it. It will stick out in the mix like nothing else and after you're done tuning remove the reverb. You're welcome

    The most rookie mistake to do is to start to use 808 in first place. 808 is overused sound that rinsed to death already. Together with hi hat rolls…

      What do you use, 303 or a moog? They don’t hit like an 808, especially for slower songs you’re gonna want something that fills the spaces, sub bass is perfect for that

    I'm not gues. Sometimes obvious non-experiency creators making extremely hot bangers with out-off tuning bass notes. If it sounds completely in harmony and don't disturbs your ear - why not?

    • @Cableguys
      @Cableguys  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's the typical trap/hip-hop bass you hear in many tracks nowadays. The source is the kick drum from the Roland TR-808 drum machine, hence the name '808'.

    Thanks! Im pretty new to this but in the 2nd last step, can I always trust that the distorted parts are in tune? Is there a specific type of saturation that consistently works best for this?

    • @Cableguys

      I recommend using a basic saturator or drive plugin - nothing too fancy or creative.

    • @Cableguys

      I agree! When done with purpose, out-of-tune elements can create a sense of menace or unease. The problem is when you want it to be in key, but it isn't 😆 - Joe
