Omg that first story is almost what happened with my old district manager too. Our store wasn't upselling as much as corporate wanted, so he visited to "show [us] how it's done". We ended up receiving complaints from two different customers about how pushy he was and how uncomfortable he made them feel. I developed a very specific hatred of district managers from that job.

I somehow went from being the manager's 'fair-haired child' to being on her s**t list no matter how hard I worked
While I freely admit that I was having problems due to my mother's death and the s***storm that followed, it was clear that she wanted me out.
The handwriting was on the wall. She was looking for any excuse to fire me, which would have meant no pension after 33 years at the compant.
The bottom line is that my then-boyfriend, now-husband told me that I needed to retire. So I quietly spent the next week getting my ducks in a row regarding my retirement arrangements.
Then, on a Friday, I called and asked if I could stop by her office as I had a few questions to ask.
I walked into her office, sat down and asked the first question, jotting down the answer,. Then the second question, adding that my coworker was willing to take care of of it. Blessing on that from the manager.
I then rose and walked to the door. In the doorway, I turned and said "Oh, there's one other thing: This is my two-week notice. I'm retiring".
The Look on her face was priceless!
She knew I was pretty much untouchable from that point, but I worked my ass off for the next 2 weeks, because she was so sly.

To understand this F-U, you first need to understand how unemployment insurance works in my state. A company pays unemployment for the amount of time they employed you. For instance, if I work at company A for years, then switch to company B for just a couple of months before being laid off, then company B pays my unemployment for only a couple of weeks. Then the state makes company A pay the rest.
So I work for company A for years until a new manager comes onboard. We hate each other with a passion. I quit (meaning no unemployment, right?) and go work for company B. But I knew company B is struggling and I volunteer for a layoff. I explain to my boss that they're only going to be on the hook with unemployment insurance for a very short time. So he agrees to lay me off and not challenge my unemployment application. With no challenge, my unemployment is approved.
Things take time to work themselves through, so company A does not realize they have to pay my unemployment until it's too late to challenge it. I get a months long partially paid vacation while hated manager gets blamed for "letting him collect unemployment at their expense". LOL, he had no choice. I took the time to find a job I liked - a complete career change - so I got to collect extended unemployment out to 6 months. All at company A's expense.

Tried to get promoted three times, finally got a promotion into another department. Got told I couldn't transfer till x amount of people were hired. I asked if they could match the pay so I wasn't losing money. They said nah that's a different department. So I put in a two week notice. This is the same job that I found out i didn't get promoted cause I "tried too hard." I'm competitive by nature but I also like to get things done quickly. Sooner I get x done sooner I can do y. Let's just say I didn't do my full two weeks and left on day three saying "nah i had enough and don't need to do this anymore."

Worked at the McDonalds at a mall for a while. They have a corporate rule, or at least they did, that you can't even start cleaning, not preparing to clean, nothing, until close. So the guns for the sauces? Can't take them apart, even though you can get the sauce without the gun. Can't start washing the last of the dishes, can't take tubs out and empty them, can't start refrigerating things, etc etc. You were ONLY allowed to start after 9PM. You were also expected to be *done and clocked out* by 9PM. So you were supposed to start and finish cleaning, and then clock out, in the fraction of a second between 8:59 and 9:00 or you'd get in trouble.
Now, realistically, managers told you to start cleaning earlier but only do certain lesser used things, don't do the grill, etc etc. Which was fine. And we had until 9:30 before they started getting grumpy. But some days... Some days even higher ups came in, barked their orders, and then complained if you started pre-cleaning, but then when 9 rolled around asked why you weren't done.
If I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't, I'm gonna go with don't. Have fun with the fry station, loser.

@LegendStormcrow One would hope, but it's not written explicitly, it's a verbal rule. The people working that sort of job typically aren't the sort to be able to afford to go up against giants with no evidence in their hands besides personal testimony. At best you'd get laughed out of court and at worst they'd draw out the proceedings so long you starve and go bankrupt before you actually get anywhere.

I use to work for TK madness when a new store opened. When I started the store manager was never there, anyway after a while a rumour started that he had done a runner with money from the safe, I'm unsure if it was true. In the same store they use to make us clock out and return to the shop floor to finish our work. The Loss prevention team were also sleeping with some of the girls at the store and another LP stole more money from the safe. When they fired me, they told me and my mate not to tell anyone else, and as young men...... we told everyone. Good times.

I worked in private industry when I was younger before joining the police here in Australia. I have to say that in this country, our minimum wage is excellent and protected by our Federal Government. I have never had a boss harass me to sell more, work more hours, do unwanted overtime. I was never threatened with losing my job for not working more hours as that is illegal here. Boy, I’m so glad that I have worked in a culture where money and profit is not the only criteria.

@@RufusReadit the balance here is great. We are not terrified of losing our jobs. These “managers” have some serious issues, and I’m just grateful that they don’t seem to flourish here as they do there. Never met one in my life 😀 My first ever boss owned the company and we all got presents for Christmas. One year it was money, another was a magnum of champagne (I was 16, still underage even here 😂), and gift baskets. He was great. My father owned a large Ford dealership in outer Melbourne and his staff adored him so much that even after he retired in 2000, that some of them flew up to visit him in Queensland in 2017. My darling dad died in 2022, and I have heard from some of his staff telling me what a wonderful boss he was to them. It’s lovely to hear that about my dad ♥️

@@RufusReadit that sounds dreadful! Move here, you’ll love it! Four weeks annual leave, 3 weeks sick leave and numerous public holidays. You cannot get fired for being sick, it’s illegal and most places will send you home nicely to recover. When I worked at the Federal Court they called and paid for a taxi and someone to come with me to hospital as they were so concerned. My sister in private industry lost her only child and had two years off on full pay due to a mental breakdown. Employers here look after their staff which in turn makes employees more loyal and hardworking. It cuts both ways.
