I always smile and say hello, and ask them where they have come from, when I don't know them at a meeting, so that we have something to chat about. I am always aware that even though I may be comfortable at meetings, where I don't know anyone, many other people are not, so it helps them to feel calmer and welcomed.

Belonging is a critical, yet often overlooked, aspect of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). While diversity focuses on the presence of different identities and perspectives, and equity ensures that everyone has access to opportunities and resources, belonging is what makes those individuals feel truly valued and accepted. Without a sense of belonging, diverse and equitable environments can feel performative, and inclusion remains superficial.
In workplaces and schools, creating a culture of belonging is essential for fostering engagement, collaboration, and well-being. When people feel that they belong, they are more likely to contribute their unique skills and perspectives, leading to more innovative ideas and stronger outcomes. However, achieving belonging goes beyond policies or programs; it involves cultivating an environment where people feel respected, heard, and supported, regardless of their background. This includes celebrating differences, encouraging open dialogue, and building genuine relationships that break down barriers.
In schools, belonging can impact academic performance, social development, and mental health. Students who feel like they belong are more likely to participate, excel, and develop the confidence they need to reach their full potential. In workplaces, employees who experience a sense of belonging are more motivated, engaged, and loyal, leading to lower turnover rates and higher productivity.
To foster a true sense of belonging, institutions must go beyond diversity training and inclusive language and take tangible actions. This includes creating safe spaces for dialogue, establishing mentorship programs that support underrepresented groups, and embedding inclusive practices into every aspect of the organization’s culture-from hiring to team dynamics to leadership. Leadership must also model inclusivity, showing empathy and understanding, and reinforcing that belonging is a shared responsibility across the entire institution.
Ultimately, belonging is what makes diversity and inclusion meaningful. When individuals feel that they truly belong, they can thrive, contributing to a culture where everyone feels valued and empowered to be their authentic selves.

“A society that puts equality-in the sense of equality of outcome-ahead of freedom will end up with neither equality nor freedom. The use of force to achieve equality will destroy freedom, and the force, introduced for good purposes, will end up in the hands of people who use it to promote their own interests.” ~Thomas Sowell

Thanks for sharing your DEI strategy. You've really helped raise my awareness. I love connecting with people through humor and have found if it's positive and uplifting, it can help people feel included. Congrats on a great TEDx Talk!

Do you think straight white men have "positive personal experiences of belonging" under DEI when every metric of this grift portrays them as the ultimate villian?

This all reminds me so much of the typical cheer leading and "team building" staple to tech startups that went right out the window shortly after an IPO pump-and-dump and subsequent layoffs.
There's plenty of diversity, equity, and inclusion in homelessness and unemployment.

How is that your response smh? If you watch the entire video, you'll see your comment doesn't make sense and is off topic. She's simply talking about creating a work environment where everyone can thrive. To your point, it's common sense that if you can't do the job it's probably not for you.
