A few words about materials for the newbies: "Run what you brung." Its more important to be making marks rather than what materials you are using. Any tool, any paper and just do it. They'll all work. When the time comes that you notice something isn't working the way you want use the following information: Pencils: (H)ard and (B)lack. Higher the number, the more hard or more black. Graphite pencils have graphite which is what gives them color, and a binder which gives them durability. Hard pencils have harder binder, Black pencils more graphite. HB is sort of a compromise. The so-called #2 pencil used for taking tests uses a different grading system, but is similar to an HB. Most mechanical pencils come with #2/HB leads, sometimes you can find them in other grades. Harder pencils, combined with a light touch, are often used for putting in guidelines; press too hard and you dent the paper making later erasure challenging. In the beginning it only matters if you are using a sketchbook as the harder pencils will dent the paper. If you put a sheet of thin plastic or cardstock under the page you're working on, this becomes a non-issue. Colored pencils are not graded this way. Paper: When graphite sketching, notice how smooth the paper is. Cheap printer/copier paper is pretty smooth. If you use a 2H pencil on it your marks may look silvery instead of black. If this is the only paper you have, try a Black graded pencil. If you can't get one, make a pad of the copier paper by putting extra sheets under the one you're working, 3-5 should help. Yes, the paper will dent, but you're going to use this to your advantage. The paper will wrap around the tip of the pencil as you apply pressure which increases the surface area of the contact which results in more graphite on the paper. Most sketch paper is not so smooth. This is called "tooth" with papers for pastels being almost rough. It is this texture that grabs your medium from your tool and holds onto it. If the paper is too smooth for the medium, you may be tempted to apply too much pressure. Pen and marker paper don't need as much and are smooth, paper for pencil needs a little more, charcoal needs even more, etc. If you see Bristol paper, know that it comes in two surfaces, smooth and vellum; remember the smooth is better for marker, so the vellum will be better for graphite. Some papers are two-sided, one side may have more tooth than the other. Paper comes in different thicknesses and weights. Stay with cheaper, thin paper for practice. When the time comes look into thick papers for your project, they'll hold up to aggressive erasing, inking and color washes. Erasers: Pink erasers used to have pumice added to them and have a tendency to damage paper and leave a tint behind. White plastic or vinyl erasers are the standard used by artists. Gum erasers have some unique properties that make them very messy, but very good at lifting marks off the paper. Kneaded erasers are soft, putty-like and tacky. They can be shaped to a point to erase with pin precision, or dabbed on an area to lighten the marks. You probably won't need any of these other than the white one while learning to sketch.

3:30 Also, if you sketch with colored pencil(s) you can draw over it with "regular" pencils, or even ink, and be rid of colored lines in Photoshop after you scan them leaving only the finished lines. This is how you can ink with pencils instead of ink btw.
"Beginners always care about the materials and the quality of it" I'm not bragging, but bro! I drew a literal artwork using the cheapest pencil in our school!

Very informative and refreshing presentation! I've drawn for most of my youth, but fell away when older ... You've inspired me to relax and have fun again.
As a beginner at drawing, I find it funny hearing about the challenge of not using an eraser or simply just using a pen. When I started actively trying to learn early this year, I had started with office pens and yellow notepads at my job, (because that's all we really had) and stayed with it for a long time. My thoughts always returned to the idea that it was probably more punishing as I negated so much room for any mistakes, which after watching this, I'm glad it isnt just me thinking this. I feel like it paid off to a fair degree once I transferred to a more professional grade mechanical pencil. I feel I've made a lot of improvement from switching to one as well. I especially want to keep in mind that no sketch needs to be perfect, and that not every line needs to be a mirror image when using a reference!! Really appreciate your insight!! I'm definitely binging more of your videos. ✏️✒️🤍🖤
Im really late, but thank you for making these kinds of videos, you have really comforted me with rich art supplies, and you don't have to use rich art supplies to be good at art. I LOVE your videos! You make drawing fun! I'm sure you already know this, but when you were talking about pencils, I just had to find out about what HB does mean. B stands for black :) which translates to a softer lead having the ability to make the shadows more black. THANK YOU again for all your super fun tutorials!
Thank you so much for this video, I honestly though about quitting bc I didn’t see any improvement but it seems like I’m stressing it to much and forgot I started drawing because it was fun in the first place so thank you 🙏
4:09 yeah, I use this method when animating. If someone us walking, the right arm will ve orange, and the right arm will be blue, same for the legs. To keep track of which arm is which, and which leg is wich. I HIGHLY, Suggest using this method if your an animator and still learning.
Hey Marcel, just wanted to say I really like your leather(?) cuff, it looks really nice. I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I’ve learned a lot from you. Bless❤
Most videos about drawing out in the internet are mostly about figure drawing. I would love to see the process for background on a comic or something like that. A world in which to insert my characters. Thanks 😊
I actually prefer pen, it forces you to think more, it looks better and in my opinion feels smoother and more natural Also notecards! Draw on notecards. All the space on a sketchbook page can be really intimidating untill you learn to draw small
6:00 - Tracing Paper is an option too. Though, you have to REALLY like it in order to waste more pencil lead by applying a thick layer to the opposite side to draw it again. But the light board and window is easier. ( I have a lighting board.)
I did expect something else when i clicked on this video at first... But man, DrawlikeaSir, you had me laughing at some parts, making my day, and made me tear up with your amazing words (Im emotional okay!?) i love the video alot and i think all your other videos will help me in the future aswell. my biggest problem is judging myself and the fact i lose patience before i even started XD thank you alot for the videos!
I always just sketch with a normal #2 pencil on blank paper sheets and use a basic pink eraser. I always felt bad seeing how other people had fancy pencils and sketchbooks but my family just didn’t buy them but over time I realized it literally does not matter. I like sketching. I may not be good at it, I don’t know proportions that well, I can’t draw most things, but I really have fun. I love sketching eyes, flowers, cats, and other things even if they aren’t as good as when others do it
H is from HAUT. It means HIGH. French somehow dominates pencil labels haha. i dont know why. The larger the H number, the lighter the stroke. So, if you need the lightest of touch, use the H pencils. They also stay sharper longer. B comes from the French word BAS. It means LOW. The letter ‘B’ signifies a LOW quantity of binder creating a higher pigment/graphite deposit and darker stroke. thus softer .
I really do think drawing on cheap paper is one of the best tips. I take it a step forward and draw on whatever I can find. Scrap paper, paper towels. Whatever can make a mark and can be drawn on. It's great to practice on. Especially that you don't care how it would turn out. Plus you can clean it up later on something nicer. Like better paper or digital.
Thanks man I always get bummed when I draw because I'm not that good. I'll try focusing on enjoying myself and learning and hopefully I get as good as you.
i thought the main reason why people use blue and red pencils is because they can ink directly on top of it and when they scan the page to be edited for the manga, the blue or red pencil gets ignored by the scanner because its too light

6:00 - Tracing Paper is an option too. Though, you have to REALLY like it in order to waste more pencil lead by applying a thick layer to the opposite side to draw it again. But the light board and window is easier. ( I have a lighting board.)
thank you master🧙♂️
I did expect something else when i clicked on this video at first...

Great tips presented in a fun, lighthearted way. Thank you!
Thanks Arnold, I feel way more confident!

I'm 13, and I started drawing like a month ago. And he inspired me.
bro still is the best, even multiple years later
i thought the main reason why people use blue and red pencils is because they can ink directly on top of it and when they scan the page to be edited for the manga, the blue or red pencil gets ignored by the scanner because its too light
