    The rifle arrived today and I dialed in the scope just a couple hours ago th-cam.com/users/postUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL . I haven’t shot with a scope in probably 25 years. The X on the left was my target. (the shot almost in the bullseye on the right X was my father in laws first shot after I made adjustments) The two shots circled are my first 2 shots. Then I brought it down - shot once. Then brought it over to the left. From there zeroed it in to dead center. This all was from 25 yards out. Follow instructions carefully when mounting the scope. So far I'm very happy with the purchase.

    There's nothing like hunting with a vintage gun. You can watch all the videos you want with a new gun, latest scope, in the latest, greatest caliber, but an old gun is something special. Last year I shot a whitetail buck with a Winchester 1894 in .32-40. That was one of my favorite hunts.

      @veteranironoutdoors8320 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I second that sentiment. I took my biggest buck this year with an 1891 carcano. Its my favorite hunt, besides my first when I took a big doe with a mosin 91/30.

      Very true! You (I) connect to the history and your ancestors in very different way, by using old methods and equipment. The focus changes from beeing about the kill, to the experience about the hunt. Somewhat to prove I got some of the skills the oldtimers depended on. I prefere to use my old ferlach (Johann Siggot) drilling (20gauge & 7x72R) from 1931(not that old), with external hammers. Light, slim, and a beaty to use!

      @@veteranironoutdoors8320 As a teenager, we had an old SMLE 303 at our farm house; hunted for deer with it, but there were few deer about. Several years later there was a buck that began crossing our small farm near our neighbors pond. I nailed up a plank in a forked tree and waited there one frosty morning; caught him chasing a doe and put a 170 grain slug through him with a 1937 Model 94 Winchester 30-30. I have that rifle, except mine is a take down with a 4 round magazine. I use the exact same mold, the same brass and the same powder. I use a compressed charge of 80 grains of powder through a 2/3rds meter drop tube. It allows the powder to settle in the case better. I also use a magnum primer. Bullet lube is SPG or a concoction made of tallow and bee's wax. My accuracy is about the same. I have never taken the pin out of the mold.
    You are a true hunter. And this is one of the best video's about hunting that I have ever watched.

    • @capandball
      @capandball  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks! I will also try the compressed charge later, but as the largest game we have here is red deer, the 66 grains can also do the job. SPG is an excellent lube, I used that also on my bullets.

    When I retired from MLAIC competition (clay trap) I took up patched round ball shooting on paper and now I can good enough I hunt game too.
    Many of my hunts a fruitless, but for me, it's about being out there enjoying the wilderness; seeing game is a bonus and to take the game is the icing on the cake.
    In our NZ winter, I help on a peasant shoot as a beater and at seasons end, the beaters get one or two days shooting and as a clay target shooter, taking a high pheasant with a muzzle loading shotgun is so rewarding.

    One thing I always do when hunting in snow or dense woods is place a piece of electrical tape over the muzzle. I've never had it affect accuracy in a notable way, and it can prevent dangerous muzzle obstructions when beating around in the bushes and falling in the snow. Not graceful, but very practical.

    Its funny to think about all the modern ammunition factories introducing new high-tech projectiles made from exotic materials and alloys in all sorts of shapes and complicated manufacturing processes....and then you get absolutely perfect performance from that cast lead hollow point over some black powder.....reliable expansion, total weight retention, excellent penetration.
    To me, it just makes many modern projectiles look like over-engineered wastes of money, designed to attract us with their new shininess.

    Watching this video reminded me of when I hunted as a kid. I’d go into the woods with my Winchester 62A and still hunt squirrels. I lament much of what is now called hunting because it strikes me as predominantly shooting and not so much as hunting. I believe a great disservice was done to the sport when, in the pursuit of increased sales, military rifles like AR’s were called sporting arms. Armed with military weapons we turned onto a road more militaristic in approach to the taking of game. Camouflage clothing, laser sights, overly long distance shots, ATV’s or even helicopters as shooting platforms, and other modern approaches are commonly portrayed as the way to hunt. Thanks for this video. It says much more about hunting than just your spoken words. Regular clothes and one good shot is all a man needs to experience the experience. I believe that the stripping away of the superfluous is the thing to be most sought after when immersing oneself in what is left of the natural world. Thanks again for conveying that beautifully.

    i wasn't expecting such a complete review, really nice piece of history, here in argentina a lot of wild board hunters uses 44-40 1892, rolling blocks and 1891 mausers, its good to give the prey an opportunity, using modern equipment kills the vibe of ethical hunting and make it easier, in my childhood used to hunt with +100 years belgium shotguns and single shots to learn to take perfects shots or leave the animal. greetings! got a new sub

    Hungary must indeed be a beautiful country. Hood shooting with a traditional rifle. Nothing tastes better than wild boar in a brown gravy.

    Excellent video, great shot in low light with iron sights on a beautiful rifle, we hunters are very fortunate to be active participants in nature, not just observers from the sidelines.

    You are fortunate to be able to live your dream! I have been carrying in Canada since the 1980s an original 1886 that was converted from 33 win to 45-70. I too have been fortunate to live the dream, my most memorable and successful harvest with that rifle was a bull elk in 1994 . Good hunting.

    There is little finer than wandering alone,or with your dog,hunting.To sit quietly in the depths of the country whilst gradually the wildlife restarts it routine ignoring you is life enhancing.

    Beauty. pure clean pure beauty. Having walked to woods with a rifle just as you. Hear the sounds, smell the air, feel pure raw nature as I look for the bounty. Fail in procuring a harvest but enjoy the day regardless. and what a beauty of a rifle and load. My compliments sir. You show the kernel of being Human.

    Watching those from one of the most populated cities in the world. It really gives me nostalgia for my family's original mountainous country side over 15,000 km away. I miss hunting with my grandpa. If I go back, I'd love to do the same with a lever action black powder riffle instead of the shotguns and bold actions we used. I miss the woods and tracking in silence.

    I use the same bullet in my Marlin .45-70, cast with 1-30 alloy and driven to about 1400 fps/425 m/s. I get the same result from a well-placed shot on our blacktail deer...straight down in a heap. And it doesn't tear up a lot of meat, either.
    For those interested, it's Lyman mold #457122. Cast them soft and keep the velocity low, these aren't a high velocity design and will work best at black powder velocities.
