- In 2020, journalism schools went through their own “racial reckoning.” The result? New classes focused on reporting on race. Many students embrace what is taught in these classes as it aligns with the ways they see journalism. But what happens when they try to take these new ideas on how to engage with communities into newsrooms? What if there’s pushback from more senior staff? And is this new way of reporting actually better? - This panel is from Emancipator's first Racial Reporting Convening, held on September 23, 2023, to discuss solutions to mainstream media's persistent insipid and problematic coverage of people of color.
Panel: From the Classroom to the Newsroom
Speakers:
Lisa Armstrong - Professor, UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism
Wesley Lowery - Executive Editor, Investigative Reporting Workshop
Kori Suzuki - Staff Reporter, KPBS Public Media
Myah Overstreet - Freelance Journalist, UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism
