      I always go with the power stroke hook set! Especially with the small rods I use.

    Me and my wife just moved here from texas! What campground were you in? I want to check that place out!

      I don't know the name of this particular campground. It was closed. I am usually fishing in the backcountry by the time the campgrounds in this area open. If you go to my lakes and reservoir fishing playlist, I have clips for Loon and Icehouse Lakes as well which are in this Crystal Basin Recreation area. There are campgrounds at all of them and dispersed camping is allowed at this Lake and Loon Lake. a simple internet search for any of the three lakes I mentioned here will give you the campground names and reservation options. I also have a lot of hiking and fishing opportunities in this region across my fishing and hiking playlists. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the mountains.

      It will stay like that through spring. Once the surface water warms up and a thermocline is established it is harder to get those nicer fish from shore. The time to go is now!

      Fun time out there. It worked out so that we were fairly hungry by the time we got to cooking.

      It was a wash! That last rainbow I got with the predator scars and his mackinaw were pretty close in size. I think we were both so hungry by the time we started cooking fish we simply forgot about the $5!

      I saw a couple of boats out and one group fishing down the shore a bit for a while but, for the most part, we were alone. Get on out there and get some!

    Hey I’m just curious if anyone told you that you couldn’t fish there ? Tomorrow will be my birthday and I don’t want do a bunch of driving ,but I called some forest service lady and she said that all the lakes in that area will be closed off after April2022 for construction . I want go up and check out union valley or loon lake but don’t want drive all that way for nothing.

      Closing Crystal Basin Recreation Area? I have never heard of that happening outside of the National Forest closures for fires last year. Email fish and wildlife or call the nearest National forest office would be my next move. This is the time when all of the campgrounds should be opening soon.

    Im new to trout fishing in California, is there particular size requirements and limits for trout ? Great video by the way!

    • @wildernesswithamani1027
      @wildernesswithamani1027  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your best bet would be to just bring up the regulation guide for California Fish and Wildlife. Look at how the special regulation chart is set up and then read over general regulations. If the water you plan to fish isn't on the special regulations chart it's probably under general regulations. Section 5.85 is fairly new and expands river fishing opportunities. I have never been comfortable giving out regulations! I could be wrong! Good luck.

      It's the time of year. I might be hitting some of those close lakes with how windy and sketchy the weather will be on my next days off. It's supposed to snow in the mountains Monday!

      I was there on Monday. I saw two boats come in to the ramp we were near. Maybe one of them was you! Sounds like you had a good day. I was going to bring my small boat but I think I just got lazy! Beautiful day out there though.

    Definitely a Cormorant.

    • @wildernesswithamani1027
      @wildernesswithamani1027  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That thing had a slash on it's back and a puncture wound on it's side. It also had what looked like a scrape towards the tail behind the puncture wound. It was interesting so we took some time checking it out. It looked like something took a bite but who knows.

    • @DD-mz4fw
      @DD-mz4fw 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cormorants have little razors in there mouth. They grab the fish by the side, and usually puncture the fish with the tip of the beak. But sometimes the fish is to big to handle, and will slither out, getting sliced while escaping. I’ve been sliced by one, right through my rain jacket.

  • @dccnightowl
    @dccnightowl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Amani, another great upload. I have 2 questions for you: Is there a minimum size requirement when it comes to keeping trout? Also, do I need any additional licenses to have more than one pole in the water? (I have a CA and NV license.)

    • @wildernesswithamani1027
      @wildernesswithamani1027  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For California you need to pay for a second rod designation on your license to use 2 rods. With that, my non-resident license ran about $160 (I live in Reno). As far as size limit, I think it's 6" for trout under general regulations but don't quote me on that. If I catch a fish that small it's usually in a backcountry creek where I'm fishing barbless and letting everything go anyway. What I pay attention to mostly is the chart for trout waters with special regulations in the CA fish and Wildlife regulation guide. Check to see if the water you plan to fish is listed alphabetically on there because sometimes there is a minimum size requirement on any allowable bag limit. For example, it might say "limit is 2 trout 14" or larger. Hope that insight helps.

      @@wildernesswithamani1027 It certainly does help, thank you. I'm in Reno, too! Have only caught anything at Boca so far, but I'm trying hard on the Truckee, using some jigs I've seen on your videos.

    Mack’s come in shallow in spring to harass the spawning rainbows. I like to throw spoons for them. They are good to eat you should try some. Throw out one bait rod and second rod 3/8 ounce spoon like a cyclone or daredevil.

    • @wildernesswithamani1027
      @wildernesswithamani1027  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried Mackinaw a couple of times. A little fishy for me. I guess it would help to remove the skin. For me, I like rainbows because they fight and taste better. That's mostly what I'm going for in Lake Tahoe. Mackinaw just sort of "happen" by chance sometimes.

    Why not pan~fry the
    whole fish?. Filleting wastes a lot of meat

    • @wildernesswithamani1027
      @wildernesswithamani1027  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Filets with larger fish cook fast and evenly. Cooking a fat 16" trout like that on my stove is tough. The meat along the spine is often still rare when the outer meat is past done. I do a pretty good job of getting the meat off the fish.
