There's a video of Harry Connick Jr. playing piano with his orchestra where he solves the problem of the audience clapping on 1 and 3. he slips in a 5 beat measure and, voila, the audience is now clapping on 2 and 4. You can see the bass player raise his arms like he's saying "Yeah!".
Happy 60th! I just celebrated my 65th on 10/23. I saw a teenaged Wynton play in a club in New Orleans (that hadn’t opened yet, since it was early early afternoon). His dad Ellis was there too.
Did anyone else notice Sarah Willis, 4th horn extrordinaire of the Berlin Philharmonic & star of her own TH-cam channel, standing next to Winton on the stand?
Yes. Hard not to notice. Besides being a world class horn player, she is a great ambassador in many ways in the music world. And always handles it joyfully. However, she is in so many places doing so many things, that I have done the math and am convinced she has been cloned and there are three of her.
It's not Brandford on soprano saxophone, but the also great Mike Basden, an old friend of the Marsalis family who has lived in Berlin for the last 20 years not seeing his friend Wynton.
We need more prominent people like Sarah Willis shining a light on Cuba!, I used to live in the U.K., but unless I've overlooked things they tend to shine a light most so on themselves (perhaps I'm more disgusted now than then). In any event, America's Classical Music benefits from this event in Germany, as do we all.
What a great evening that was. And thanks for capturing this touching moment at the end. (Do you know, who the guy with the soprano sax was who was entering from the left at the end?)
