Hallo Bob, absolutely I agree, most people do not understand - that *Time is money,
Dekades back - I had had a Beech-360 for business not for toy, So the time works for me,
in time of amortisation of costs.
As I sold my Company - also gave away, to the right time- as PT6 coming up
I guess piston engines consumption is too expensive actually.

Two big things missing from this video - avionics and engine time. A modern glass IFR-certified cockpit swings the price $30K compared to a busted, barely legal, VFR steam panel. Also, engines get overhauled about once every 2000hrs, and that can cost $20K per engine. So depending on how much time those twins have on them, that's another $40K swing. Paint is another $10K. The airframe is only about a third of the cost.

I have a Cessna 337G with completely redone IFR glass panel, and would not trade that plane for anything. The breadbox cabin design gives the best shoulder and head space and leg room is phenomenal. I have removed the most aft 2 (jumper) seats and made that space cargo friendly, so technically it became a 4-seater, though.

Great reviews. One thing that everyone in the industry never talk about though is useful payload. yes you can get 6 people in these planes, but how much fuel are you leaving on the ground? Mfg's almost never list useful payload...which is calculated at full fuel. The range with 6 people in these plans will end up being half since you have to stop for fuel and have reserves in IFR. You missed the 206/210's which can be had for under $100k as well. Still a great review. I am in the process of buying right now and cant decide on a 310 or Saratoga (little over the $100k range).

Under $100k? 6-seat? Twin engine redundancy? Safety? Load capability? And safety, again. The answer is the C-337. If you don't stupidly takeoff with insufficient fuel or stupidly fly one into a rock-filled cloud, either of which will kill you in any aircraft type, this airplane won't kill you. I own one in Alaska. There is absolutely no piston aircraft I would trust more for night, mountain or IFR flight.
Or in harm's way in hostile locales. I flew them in Vietnam, and later in Kosovo and Iraq after quitting the airlines at the 27-year point.
Lose an engine after takeoff? Ho-hum. There's less noise and a reduced rate of climb. Now what else? There must be more to do. Oh yeah, the FAA says I'm supposed to land at the nearest suitable airport.
Price? 50k to 60k is common. To get it over $100k, you're talking a Riley Rocket or a pressurized or a turbo with a loaded panel.
C-336, the fixed gear model, is also an option. It's less expensive to maintain, but watch the rear engine temps.
She is ugly; that's true. But that's only skin deep.

Having owned a V35B and a B55 in the past I can tell you for sure that the purchase price is only the admission to the show. Be ready to pay at least 10k USD a year just to have it sit (annual inspections, hangar space, insurance). It's a rich mans sport and it will make you a poor man in a minute ;-) But... do it if you can.

  • @joelstatosky1817
    @joelstatosky1817 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

For those mentioning the cost of ownership, you must understand that most people who are interested in the purchase of a airplane or a boat will use it substantially more often than most people. Hell they might use it every other day. So while for us it is more economical to rent an airplane, for many others it may be cheaper to just purchase one. Of course this depends on the type of plane or boat. Hell a sail boat or an airplane powered by a Chevy engine, is a lot cheaper to maintain than a cheap private jet.
If you don't use it often, don't buy one.

He and some of his buddies would fly to North Carolina from Massachusetts for a few days of golf in the spring. One of the other guys owned a Cessna Super Skymaster. My dad would take one of the guys and all the luggage. He always got their first because the Super Skymaster didn't have the range of the 6.

Many light twins are available for little-to-nothing because their cost of operation is insane. They have massive fuel consumption, and double the engine rebuild cost. Basically, if you can afford the fuel and the maintenance of a twin, you probably don't have to limit yourself to only 100k anyways.

Good assortment and choices. I'm glad you pointed out operating costs above and beyond fuel. that's the nut right there. be very thorough (& honest) in determining your operational needs prior to selecting an aircraft. In addition, you may want to consider the type of flying you want to (can) do. 1000 mile range sounds nice yet realize that's 5+ hours in a plane with your PAX. fly safe and fly well.

@@habaneropepper4156 Most notably, the Rutan Voyager. It had two different models of Continental engines. A 240 up front and a 200 in the rear. These were in a push/pull configuration.
The Gulfstream Hustler had a Turboprop in the nose and a turbofan in the tail.
There were also a bunch of mixed engine aircraft using props and jets. Like the B-36 Peacemaker with 6 radial and 4 jet engines.
Trying to balance the weight and power of two different engines outside of the fuselage would be... interesting. And a mechanical nightmare.

Looking at this i cannot help but wonder at how close the US came to making flight cheap, affordable, common, and convenient, almost getting to the point where the average family could own an airplane. One has to wonder why that never happened, with people choosing instead to buy cars from enormous corporations that had massive lobbying power with the government... I guess it shall forever remain a mystery.
