The dead giveaway Kiwi accent where every vowel is turned on its head, terms like "chilly bin" (Kiwi) and "Eskie" (Oz) and trying to explain why you talk so funny. I moved to NZ from the US and became a Kiwi citizen in the early 90s and went through the whole thing in reverse, trying to figure out how to speak "Kiwi". It's a hard accent to mimic, harder than Australian, but then NZ is this little microcosm bubble unto itself at the bottom of the Pacific, so it's refreshing to see the PM on a major USA talk show. She comes off as so down to Earth. Sweet-as cousie-bro!

@@Gregoryismnz There are a lot of self styled 'experts' on the politics of NZ. Like the vast majority of people, they know bugger all about what it takes to run a country or whether or not the incumbent is doing a good job or not. It's an unfortunate fact that Kiwis, like all other peoples, make their judgement on how the current situation benefits them, rather than how good it might be for the population as a whole. The fact that the comment is ad hominem tells you exactly what it's worth.

    • @robe2504

As a NZ History graduate - many NZer's have a delusional view of the racial harmony in their own country. Cheryl had the British Colonists actually done what you claim Maori would still own 80% of NZ land, and probably still be a self governing independent people, with all immigrants effectively being tenants.
Consider that when the treaty was written the Maori population was estimated at 100,000 compared to the 2,000 unruly British inhabitants, that were dependent on them for food. The treaty was written in response to Maori complaints about the lawless behaviour of British residents and the suggestion that if the Brits didn't get their house in order, the locals would do it for them.
Also consider that in a treaty the weaker side usually makes concessions - so as you note British citizenship was given to Maori as an appeasement. Why would a dominant nation give that up? Britain did not give citizenship to the natives of any other country it colonised.
As late as the 1950s houses on Maori land in modern day Auckland were burnt down by the Auckland City Council because they were an eyesore on the route of a planned royal visit and officials did not want the Queen to see them.
New Zealand has as many dirty little racist secrets as any country, but we have perhaps recognised them and started undoing them a bit quicker than some other countries, but make no mistake - racism is alive and well in NZ, and like the USA the incarceration rate of Maori is 20 times that of European just like black Americans.

As a New Zealander let me say she doesn't care for others just about UN and WEF initiatives. The average New Zealander faces low wages, terrible infrastructure and extremely high housing prices. Jacinda's response to the rising cost of living in NZ was that it was a "non issue". I along with many other young people who see no future here (as we can't afford housing) will be heading overseas. You're welcome to move here and take my space and enjoy renting/earning a pittance of what you could be overseas.

@@101noz101 I'm a kiwi too and feel pretty much as you do in terms of low wages, high cost of living, housing affordability, student costs for tertiary education. Rest assured none of our issues are the result of the current government. Labour, with Jacinda at the helm, has done its best to correct National's decisions (reducing housing stock, cheaper labour by keeping wages low, reducing the state sector but employing contractors to make up the shortfall, etc.,) whilst also battling Covid, and other serious local and world events which impact and are beyond our control.
Regardless of perceived problems, I believe we're still living in the best country in the world.
PS she corrected herself by acknowledging there's a problem with the cost of living and difficulties experienced by families buying food and petrol. That resulted in swiftly lowering, for a period, tax paid to the government in petrol charges to help drivers. She gets an 'A' for effort and achievement for the things that matter. How easy would you have found it to build properties in the middle of a pandemic when even individual sheets of gypboard aren't available for sale?
