for everyone still confused, overdrive lowers RPM acting as an extra gear to save gas. at higher RPM your engine uses more gas to rotate it at the high revs. with overdrive it reduces the need for extra gas by slowing the RPM.
It's simple, this dude explains it like it's hard to understand. The input shaft turns (EXAMPLE) 2/3th turn as the output shaft will make a FULL turn that's all overdrive is. It will indeed save gas and make it more responsive/lively.
Thank you Peter for your very informative and helpful-to-me video. I tried changing overdrive to 'on' and 'off' (on my Isuzu Bighorn) as you portrayed, at various speeds, and it all worked out as you demonstrated. Please forgive the negative comments from folks who have never been overseas or never met anyone from beyond their local neighbourhood. And thanks to those prior comment- makers who encouraged new viewers to just listen; persevere; learn and not be unduly prejudgiced.
Thanks for your time to explain the overdrive. Sure, it is a fuel saver and engine wear reducer. But my only use for the option of deactivating the o/d is while pulling a trailer. The added drag of the trailer changes the requirements on the transmission, in my case, to a point where the transmission at highway speed is always near the point downshifting out of o/d into 5th gear on my FJ Cruiser. This causes frequent shifts up and down just to maintain a constant speed on anything but a flat surface. Disabling o/d here makes for less wear on the engine and transmission by keeping it in 5th. And yes, if I would drive faster the drag increase might keep it in 5th. Or conversely slower driving may allow it to stay in overdrive.
*FOR ANYONE WHO DOESN'T UNDERSTAND* Turning off overdrive just stops the transmission from switching to 4th gear, therefore the revs will be higher since the transmission is still stuck at 3rd gear... And it's just usual knowledge that higher revs equals more engine power (Which is why people would want to use this feature). The issue with this is that while you are benefitting from the higher revs and extra power, the car is also using *much* more fuel compared to usual since the car isn't switching to the 4th gear
Oh God, all along my understanding of overdrive was upside down. I would think that I am in overdrive when the lights on the dashboard were showing. Thank you teacher to open my eyes.
I also thought the same, know I know better. When the OD OFF light is showing on the dashboard that means you are in economy mode. (No need for much power) when you need much power you press the button to turn the light off, meaning you have enable OD for more power and high fuel consumption uphill.
+54sloth My Chevy has over 550,000+ miles. It's a 1990 Silverado 2500. It's been to Colorado, Oregon, and Washington a lot. Same engine. it can still burn out which amazes me.
In overdrive there is a special gear that connect the engine with the wheels directly dismissing the transmission completely thus being very economical at the highway.
Pressing overdrive ON = Economy horse power. Pressing overdrive OFF = Increase horse power. Now I iunderatand fully and thank you for the important infos👍👍👍👏👏👏😁😁😁
If you're pulling a really heavy load, turn off O/D when going up hill if you need. It's like having a 5th gear. It allows you to go get much better economy. Think about how when you shift into a lower gear on a bike. It's a lot easier to do when you're already going, takes less energy than peddling second gear, and allows you to go faster, but hills are harder to get up unless you already have momentum. Same deal for the car.
Thank you Peter for explaining this function so nicely. Well i got myself a 2003 landcruiser gxr (V6) in Qatar and was wondering what is this OD function all about. Thanks once again for this brilliant video.
Thank you for this sir! We recently converted our toyota corolla from manual to automatic and I have seen that overdrive button which I don't know what use it has until I watched your video. Now I understand why sometimes I can't accelerate that much because of the overdrive and I have difficulty on going to steep slopes/elevation. I'm going to try with overdrive off and see how it goes. Thank you!
How much did it cost to change from auto to manual? I'd like to do the opposite and change my automatic camry to manual, but not sure the cost is worth it lol.
Thanks for the briefing the Over drive. i really don;t know about the button, but after watching your video, now i know what to do and when i need to use over drive. thanks peter
okay, I know NOTHING about cars, so I've been trying to get this concept into my head for a bit, tell me if I'm wrong, but: Overdrive is basically something you can use from the 3rd gear up usually, and it can keep my revolutions down while making my car push harder, so basically it is like switching to the hardest gear of a bicycle, right? except it's not me pedaling, but the engine?
To put it simply, pushing the button turns O/D off. All this does is disable the car from entering the highest gear. That's it. If you're automatic car has 4 gears, and the you push the O/D off button, the car won't shift above 3rd gear no matter how fast you go.
What year is your Camry. I have a 95 but my OD off light won't come on. The OD on/off button of the transmission works because I can feel the car going into and out of overdrive. I think the light bulb is simply burned out. Also, your Drive light bulb is out.
By using overdrive (OD) off option, car gear will not shift from 3rd gear into 4th top gear to get more power (RPM) but at cost of more fuel consumption
Thanks a lot Peter! I appreciate you can give me a hint. My car with automatic transmission works very well when overdrive is OFF, But when overdrive is ON the transmission doesn't shift from 2nd to 3rd. if I apply more gas it get like slippage. Could you give me any idea to solve this problem? Thanks in advance
I am so indebted to you. My O/D OFF light is on. I tried searching for my Camry manual and couldn't find it. I googled Camry Overdrive, and got you. I've had this old Camry since '07 and was not aware to this button on the gear shift until I found your video!
hi peter, big fan of yours..i seee in the video you switching overdrive on and off while driving at 80mph.. isnt that bad for the gearbox as its making the gears and rpm to shift erratically? shouldnt you slow down below 30mph before turning it on and off? thanx
If on a congested traffic wherein you can only run at 40kph due to braking and accelerating often, does overdrive off save you more fuel because it is using more torque?
So it won't damage your car if you turn O/D on or off while driving. I have a 1999 Grand Marquis and have always left it on. Scotty Kilmer used my car in one of his videos too and talked about it.
Hi sir..how about my corolla seg 110 5afe auto gearbox. So basically when overdrive off light( on dash) is on the car is gonna stay in lower gear(say the limit is 3th gear and not going to 4 th gear so higher rpm) and over drive on( light not on dash) it’s gonna go through all the gears (now it can go to 4th gear) to save gas and be at a lower rpm.
I drive an '09 camry, 2.4L, 5-speed auto. Generally if I'm under 55mph I keep O/D off (so gearbox stays inbetween 1st - 4th) for the best mpg. Otherwise, it will up-shift too early for best mpg. Do you agree Peter, or does the auto-gear box know best?
Sir, I have a question regarding driving an automatic transmission car on a 30-kilometer range uphill route. What is the best driving method to use? Should I use the OD (Overdrive) OFF function or gear 2, 1 or L gear? And to assist with engine braking, on downhill, should I use gear 2, 1, or L for the entire 30 kilometers to prevent damage to the transmission? Your answer and explanation would be greatly appreciated
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor but most of the mechanic say" if you use gear 2,1 or L for the whole driving uphill or downhill for 30 kilometer route it will damage your transmission" so they advise instead of using gear 2,1 or L you should use the OD OFF. My 98 Corolla has just hit 100K and the engine is so smooth. But let me get this straight...Turning off your overdrive is like turning on Sport right? Will it harm the car.I always have it on.
I have three questions, first does Off give more acceleration from 0-30 km/h for example? also is the maximum horsepower stated in the car manual with overdrive on or off? How is the speed the same with more power? (when it increased 800 rpm) Answer what you can and thanks!
Yes it gives more acceleration because it changes the gear more later with higher revs making the car accelerate faster, than what it would be in the next gear slowly accelerating. The Horse Power is a mesurement of how much energy the engine can produce, 1 horse power = 746watts, so the horse power stated in the manual is the limit of the engine, the overdrive (on/off) option will only make you reach that limit number of horsepower (faster or slower) but it will not give you more horsepower. You will eventually reach the limit and thats the top you can get, so it only changes the time it will take you on eaching the horsepower limit. So it doesnt matter if its on or off the horsepower will always remain the same. The speed is not the same with an increase of 800rpm, you get more torque and that gives you more acceleration. Torque is needed to climb faster or reach a certain speed much faster
Sir my over drive function is not working I install new 5afe auto engine in my car. Everything properly working . Where what could be wrong . Kindly ur suggestions. Thanks
I really love this guy but recommend this to watch it with family at Saturday night ..don’t forget to turn on the captain or english automatic generator and some have snacks while watching, reading, eating and laughing 😂
keep the transmission in lower gears for more rpm, might make it faster too since you dont have to wait for the transmission to drop gears when you push the gas.. also helps on hills to slow down with engine
L is first gear. Your car will stay in first gear. I never use. 2 is second gear. Your car will only be able to shift between first and second gears. I sometimes use going down a steep hill. It will allow the engine to do your braking. D is Drive. Your car will use all three gears and overdrive if the button is on.
maximum time I drive car 40/50 in city. is it create any problem/ benefit if I always on my over drive on mode. or what happened if I drive 40/50 in over drive on mode.
Just going by my experience driving with over drive on/off. I think with over drive off it gives you more torque and with it off it gives you more acceleration. So by my understanding when you are off the highway don't use overdrive and when on the highway use it. Is that right?
Hunt Guy you can use it to lower the revs on your engine when cruising at a constant speed and to make the transmission brake you harder when you release the accelerator pedal. That's all you should use it for.Accelerating quickly should be done without overdrive and generally applying more power to the wheels should be done without overdrive...
Do you accelarate while pressing overdrive or releasing the accelator before pressing the over drive button?, which is safe sir? Thank you for the positive response
Thank you sir for the time to reply. How about shifting gears sir from drive to gear 2? Do you accelarate while shifting gears or releasing the accelator before shifting gears? My worries on suzuki wagon when shifting gears might be the engine breaking that may wear out the tires and engine.
Hi nice video, My car is a Toyota Camry 2003 Altise, it is unable to shift into overdrive (4th gear) - but shifts to gears 1-3 perfectly. Please help thank you

Higher rpms means more engine wear and tear.
Good video
Thanks for the visit
Sir my over drive function is not working I install new 5afe auto engine in my car. Everything properly working . Where what could be wrong . Kindly ur suggestions. Thanks
Maybe some wire or sensor connector is disconnected or damaged there
I really love this guy but recommend this to watch it with family at Saturday night ..don’t forget to turn on the captain or english automatic generator and some have snacks while watching, reading, eating and laughing 😂
You talk so slow I had to turn the video speed to 1.25
Thank You for Your comment. :-)
I mean, pretty sure this is his second language
I always say, someone’s English is better than my Russian, German, French or whatever native language they speak
What is the problem if the O/D indicator is always shows and no functions?
Hi, O/D button is off or gearbox failure
Hello Gentlemen
You give a very impressive knowledge.
I want to know
What is use of 2 and L mode?
keep the transmission in lower gears for more rpm, might make it faster too since you dont have to wait for the transmission to drop gears when you push the gas..
also helps on hills to slow down with engine
L is first gear. Your car will stay in first gear. I never use.
2 is second gear. Your car will only be able to shift between first and second gears. I sometimes use going down a steep hill. It will allow the engine to do your braking.
D is Drive. Your car will use all three gears and overdrive if the button is on.
maximum time I drive car 40/50 in city. is it create any problem/ benefit if I always on my over drive on mode. or what happened if I drive 40/50 in over drive on mode.
Thank You for comment Sir 😃
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor pls answer my question
Just going by my experience driving with over drive on/off. I think with over drive off it gives you more torque and with it off it gives you more acceleration. So by my understanding when you are off the highway don't use overdrive and when on the highway use it. Is that right?
Hunt Guy Overdrive gives little better fuel consumption.
Peter Finn
Ok, Thanks!
Having O/D off and traction off gives the its max potential.
NumbnutzTV
Ok thank you.
Will engaging or disengaging the overdrive while the car is at high speed damage the transmission system?
Yes, it could hurt the system.
Peter Finn no, it's just like down shifting when you step on the accelerator a little more.
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
is it recommended to turn on while driving or should you come to a complete stop?
Hi, please keep it always On.
thnks
from 🇧🇩
Welcome 😊
Well explained
Good call!
so if I have overdrive off in the city I save gas but in the highway I turn it on so I don't mess up my car is that right
Ok
Do you accelarate while pressing overdrive or releasing the accelator before pressing the over drive button?, which is safe sir? Thank you for the positive response
Hi, good point! So I releasing the accelator before pressing the over drive button.
Thank you sir for the time to reply. How about shifting gears sir from drive to gear 2? Do you accelarate while shifting gears or releasing the accelator before shifting gears? My worries on suzuki wagon when shifting gears might be the engine breaking that may wear out the tires and engine.
Hi nice video,
My car is a Toyota Camry 2003 Altise, it is unable to shift into overdrive (4th gear) - but shifts to gears 1-3 perfectly. Please help thank you
Ok, interesting. Please replace transmission oil, it might help. You might have worn out clutch in gear 4th
Did you find out the problem with the overdrive?
And have a nice day to you, so wholesome 😭🥺
Noted 👍
MEANS THAT ON NORMAL ROADS THE O/D OFF INDICATION SHOULD NOT BE SEEN ON METER.
AND WHE WE GO THROUGH HILL OR STEAP ROADS THE O/D OFF INDICATION LIGHT SHOULD BE SEEN ON METER.
Can you turn off and on while on the move?
Yes
Thx man
Sir chikhe my car ruining time d2 not working and overdrive batn not working way.
Ok
