  • Recently digitised by London's Screen Archives, and largely unseen since it was produced in the early 1950s, this rather beautiful 16mm film was made by Wimbledon Cine Club and commissioned by the Municipal borough of Wimbledon to show the many activities carried out in the district by the council. The voiceover is provided by BBC TV and radio newsreader Frank Phillips.
The core of the film focuses on how the rates are spent on essential services - street cleaning, refuse collection, sewage, parkland, etc. - and how the council is working to defray the rates by recycling and producing fertiliser. The film is bookended by two sequences taken from the Town Hall’s council chambers: the first of which shows a council meeting in session, the second features the ancient ceremony of Mayor Making.
Sights of significance include Wimbledon Town hall, a trash destructor facility on Durnsford Road, Wimbledon Common, possibly Cannizaro Park as well (the voiceover mentions the council’s recent acquisition of the park but it is not clear if it is actually shown - if you know, tell us!) and scant views of River Wandle.
This film is from the Merton Heritage and Local Studies Centre. (The full catalogue record for this film, LSA25860, is available at www.londonsscreenarchives.org.uk.)

delightful footage..great narrative, good voice.Im watching this bit of vintage in Feb 2015 ! How times have changed..and not always for the better even without 'elf &safety!' On the Parkside of WC is virtually a water-logged marsh since many many trees have been removed the council trying to return it to 'heath-land' ridding non-decidious trees ! Try tell the birds that when they fly and scatter the 'air-bourne' seeds that will simply reintroduce the same type of tree the powers that be are trying to keep at bay !Look what happened in the rain forest when trees were removed ? Nature is female and can't be controlled by man...yet,thank the good Lord.

In the 1950s the river Wandle was filthy, it run through Wandle park and my dog fell in to it once and a man had to fish him out.
