Good to see a mature overview with no gimmicks or stupid comments. Reign in Blood changed my life forever, went all the way to London to get a cd version from shades records in soho, it was expensive but worth it, still sounds amazing, iron maiden and even Venom sounded tame after that and led to my decent to the metal extreme, (bathory and Celtic frost)
My favourite is ANNIHILATOR - Alice in hell. Masterpiece
Amazing intro to that record. Human Insecticide has to be oe of Annihilator's most brutal tracks.
You did it!! And totally agree with your top 3, although I would of had Sepultura in the top 5 with Beneath the remains. Now, will you slip further down the darker end of metal and consider the likes of Nepalm Death and the multitudes of sub-genres, to the edges of hell with Burzum & Mayhem. Perhaps that’s just too far down that rabbit hole! Thanks for that video, 80s thrash had a huge impact on my teenage ears.
All great albums. Some other favorites of mine
Sepultura - Arise
Voivod - Nothingface
Overkill - Horrorscope
Death Angel - Frolic Through The Park
Annihilator - Alice In Hell
Anacrusis - Screams And Whispers
Flotsam And Jetsam - No Place For Disgrace
Good list, can't argue with Reign in Blood or Master of Puppets being put at 1 and/or 2. I personally prefer Peace Sells...But Who's Buying over Rust In Peace and Spreading the Disease over Among The Living.
Fantastic list! I'm so glad you tortured yourself to try and come up with this list as I never could because there is a plethora of great thrash albums to choose from.
Impossible for me to just pick 5, so here's my 10, in no particular order, Megadeth - Peace Sells, Flotsam&Jetsam - No Place for Disgrace, Slayer - Reign in Blood, Tesament - The New Order, OverKill - Years of Decay, Laäz Rockit - Annihilation Principle, Suicidal Tendencies - How Will I Laugh Tomorrow, Anthrax - Among the Living, Kreator - Extreme Aggression, Metallica - ...and Justice for All. And as a bonus I get Annihilator's Never NeverLand and Voivod's Dimension Hätross since I'm Canadian. Oh and any of the first three Exodus too.
1. Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? - Megadeth
2. Pleasure to Kill - Kreator
3. Forward to Termination - Sacrifice
4. Leave Scars - Dark Angel
5. The Force - Onslaught
6. Eternal Nightmare - Vio-Lence
7. Epidemic of Violence - Demolition Hammer
8. Deception Ignored - Deathrow
9. Tapping The Vein - Sodom
10. Chemical Assault - Violator
Honorable Mentions:
Dimension Hatröss - Voivod
World Circus - Toxik
The Edge of Eternity - Hexenhaus
Seasons in the Abyss - Slayer
I Hate Therefore - Cyclone Temple
Raging Violence - Hirax
For Whose Advantage? - Xentrix
Possessed by Fire - Exumer
The Ultra-Violence - Death Angel
The New Machine of Liechtenstein - Holy Moses
Game Over - Nuclear Assault
No Place for Disgrace - Flotsam and Jetsam
Twisted into Form - Forbidden
Victims of Deception - Heathen
Excellent picks and honourable mentions, my personal fave is Bonded By Blood...
These are my favourite ten -
1. Exodus - Bonded By Blood
2. Slayer - Reign In Blood
3. Anthrax - Spreading The Disease
4. Meliah Rage - Kill To Survive
5. Metallica - Ride The Lightning
6. Sodom - Sodom
7. Exodus - Fabulous Disaster
8. Metallica - Master Of Puppets
9. Angel Dust - Into The Dark Past
10. Exodus - Tempo Of The Damned
1. Reign In Blood - Slayer (1986)
2 - Master Of Puppets - Metallica (1986)
3 - Spreading The Disease - Anthrax (1985)
4 - ...And Justice For All - Metallica (1988)
5 - Rust In Peace - Megadeth (1990)
6 - The Legacy - Testament (1987)
7 - Morbid Tales - Celtic Frost (1984)
8 - Arise - Sepultura (1990)
9 - Entombed - Left Hand Path (1990)
10 - South Of Hevaen - Slayer (1988)
I can't wait to go to hevaen one day lol
Overkill again is overlooked
Excellent list, & many thanks as always :)
No problem 👍
Great list. Master of Puppets has long been my favorite metal album, but I I respect your choice to put Reign in Blood at the top. It is a distillation of thrash metal and is certainly the most ferocious 29 minute blast of blissful cacophony I've ever heard. I think I'll give it a listen tonight.
Pretty well nailed it. Id like to see a top 5 list of bands who were at the the threshold, or the tilting point of what was to become thrash...
5. Metallica - And Justice for All
4. Metallica - Kill 'em All
3. Metallica - Ride the Lightning
2. Megadeth - Peace Sells
1. SLAYER - Reign in Blood
Love the review! I would agree with all of those choices! I grew up on these albums along with many other styles and genres of rock and roll. I am going back to check out more reviews on your channel..
Rust In Peace should be number 1. It's an absolute power trip. I would add Metallicas And Justice For All and Slayers Seasons In The Abyss
I have to agree with you on Reign in Blood. That album is absolute perfection. That album changed everything for me when I heard it back in 1986. It still stands up as one of the greatest extreme metal albums of all time.
A hard thing to have just five. Sacred Reich’s ‘American Way’ would make my list; three decades later and the title track could have been written about this weeks news.
Testament The New Order would be in my top five, probably top two!,
Ride the Lightning is by FAR the most iconic, sustained and complete work in Metallica's catalogue. And as others have said - Rust in Peace should be #1.
Agree on RTL over MOP..........but it's his list, not yours
Great vid!
Great list, MoP for me is no.1 but everthing else in your list is righr there as well.
Nice one mate! old school thrash is the best!
Got all those albums. That exodus cover is fairly rare as it got banned.. Among the living is my personal favourite. I would've put beneath the remains in myself I think. You know your music pal.
Act III by Death Angel is worth a spin.
Little bit later than these but I'll put ACT III in my top 10 fure sure...
Maybe a separate list for the German Thrash Bands as they tend to sound quite different, leaning more towards Death and Black Metal.
Great list…I would also ad:
Metallica- Ride the Lightning
Razor- Violent Restitution
Metal Church- s/t
Bonded by Blood baby!
Suicidal Tendencies - Lights...Camera...Revolution!
As far as #2 through the rest, there can be some debate. But, there can be only one #1.
Among the Living was my first real intro to thrash back when it was released, I was 13 at the time, an absolute classic album great to see it make your list 🖤
Reign in Blood isn't even my favorite Slayer album. MoP and RiP are tied for tops, in my book.
Glad I grew up in the Bay Area during the hey day of thrash! 🤘🤘
Swap Anthrax - Among the Living for Testament - the Legacy and you've got the same top 5 as me.
Off topic but i hope you can find time to make time for a dedication to Dan McCafferty (RIP).
I'll be honest with you, I rarely do them. That doesn't mean I'm not saddened by it, but I usually post something on the Facebook page and leave it there. I did do a dedication to Jerry Lee Lewis, but it is rare that I do. I will be playing 'Hair of the Dog' later as a tribute
I'll be playing No Mean City but thank you for your reply. Must admit i didn't think thrash metal would be of interest to you but just highlights your eclectic taste.
RtL > MoP
SoD > AtL
Lyrical themes are usually the least important parts of music
slayer is the most overrated metal band of all time. the vocals are absolutly unenjoyable. the barking the singer produces is very annoying. people say mustaine's singing is annoying, well i tried, but i cannot listen the whole way through a slayer album. there is not a problem with the music but the vocals completely kill it all. i love megadeth with all it's flaws and metallica with their 180 degree turns, but i have never been able to listen through a slayer album due to the vocals.
