Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher Heartbreak in Hollywood

  • It was a tragic holiday season for Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher’s family, with the mother-daughter pair, both long-time Hollywood stars, passing away within a day of each other. No one had a closer view to the heartbreak than Todd Fisher, who lost sister Carrie on Tuesday, December 27, four days after she suffered a heart attack, and mother Reynolds the next day after she suffered a stroke.
Todd Fischer sat down with 20/20’s Elizabeth Vargas in Los Angeles for a special entitled Debbie & Carrie: A Hollywood Love Story on Friday, December 30, 2016 to talk about the tragic deaths, the unique love the mother and daughter had for each other and the final days of both of their lives.
Here are seven things we learned from the emotional program.
    1. Debbie and Carrie were next-door neighbors in recent years, with the two sharing the same driveway. Debbie bought the house next to Carrie's, Todd revealed, and enjoyed being closer to her granddaughter, 24-year-old Scream Queens actress Billie Lourd.
“I think it just sort of happened,” Todd said, when asked about Debbie moving in. “That was also a beautiful thing, that they could be together at that level. On your way out [of the house], you’d see how Mom’s doing.”
    2. In Carrie’s final hours, family members, including Debbie, got bedside time with the Star Wars star. “Things didn’t need to be said or done differently,” Todd said. “Things happened naturally.” He continued about the grief-stricken Singin' in the Rain legend, “My mother had said, 'I don’t want to attend my daughter’s funeral.'… [While planning Carrie’s funeral], she said she wanted to be with Carrie. Within 30 minutes, technically, she was gone.”
    3. Only one week ago, Carrie “was at the top of her game,” Todd said, as the actress had been in England promoting projects, including her new memoir, The Princess Diarist. “She was excited about Christmas. Her favorite thing to do was give out gifts. She always had the most amazing things for everybody.”
Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher attend the 2011 Creative Arts Emmy Awards at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on September 10, 2011 in Los Angeles, California.
    4. Family members thought Carrie, upon arriving back in California, might pull through, though the Blues Brothers actress was in critical condition. “We thought we might be able to save her - that was in play for a little while. [It was] not a sure thing, by any means,” Todd said. Debbie knew, Todd said, that her daughter was fading. “[Debbie] felt she had already left the building, so to speak.”
    5. Debbie’s sudden and quick death happened in front of Todd’s eyes. “I just sat there and watched her leave,” he said. “She had a will to not want to leave Carrie.” Todd said lightheartedly that Debbie will be a help to Carrie in heaven: “God said, 'Get up here, and give us a hand.'"
    6. Debbie and Carrie, who didn’t talk for years, would never have done so had Carrie not initiated the silence, according to Todd. "Debbie would never break off communication with Carrie, whatsoever," he said.
    7. Carrie and Debbie’s final resting places will be next to each other, surrounded by family friends Liberace and Bette Davis at L.A.’s Forest Lawn cemetery. “It’s horrible, it’s beautiful, it’s magical,” Todd said. “They’re together.” Source: Usmagazine.com

In the early 80's I met Debbie Reynolds after her show in Vegas. I was awed by her beauty and grace and was acting a bit of the star-struck teenager. (I was 19). I even asked her the stupidest possible question: "What does Carrie REALLY think about being most famous for Princess Leia?" Right after I said it I realized how dumb it was and turned red. But Debbie, bless her, just hugged me and said "You have no idea how much she would love to hear you ask that, she has BECOME Leia and has so much fun with it." She paused and added "I'll tell her a very handsome young man wanted to know." She was gracious, we chatted for a few minutes more and she hugged me again when we were done talking.
Shortly after I started working in the film industry as a technician and met many celebs in person. Most were as kind and gracious as Debbie was. I do regret never getting to meet Carrie in person. I did however meet Billie Lourd in person, she was also a very nice and warm person, and at the time I had no idea Carrie was her mother.
After Carrie died one of the celebs I worked with, who knew her well, told me that if Carrie and I HAD met, it would have been interesting as we shared the same sarcastic and irreverent humor.

Debbie never got the recognition she deserved, and in later life far fewer good roles than she deserved. In ‘Mother’ as well as Will & Grace and Behind the Candelabra we can see her talent (and range). I saw her one woman show in London when she was 78. She was hilarious and open and warm and fantastic.

It was a pleasure listening to him, what a wonderful being. The whole family seemed a bit crazy and original, but at the same time very loving and warm; rich and famous, but down to Earth. He said "Carrie had more needs" and doesn't seem resentful, so maybe the favoritism wasn't as bad as it seems and Debbie made it up to him in some way and/or he had a good relationship with his sister. @Alita Hargrove I'm sure living with Carrie was enough to recognize that she had more issues and needed more attention. When you have a mentally ill person in the family and they get more attention it's not because that person is loved more than any other and the rest of the family usually understands that. There may be phases in life where there MIGHT be some resentment but by that stage in life experience that resentment would be gone. In this case, Debbie seemed like a very loving and positive person who would not have neglected Todd, just focused a little more on Carrie. You can tell that by the fact that Todd seems to be so much like his mother.

A beautiful love story. What an amazing son and brother! Heartbreaking, YES!
!A love story which also included Todd, a modest, poised gentleman who narrated his Mother's and Sister's relationship with such grace.
The world will always have a special place in their hearts for these two amazing women; each owned their incredible legacy. Debbie went home to be with her darling Princess, they were truly imseperable! They say that relationships carry over into the next dimension of life!. Love conquers all.
Two beautiful jems! Blessings to Billie and Todd. The Heaven's are rejoicing! Much love!!!! ❤❤

Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds were both extremely intelligent and talented in many ways. I have always loved everything Debbie did since I was a little girl and Carrie became a wonderful writer in spite of her addictions and that takes true grit. The comments about looks are so hollow and empty, as Carrie was a lovely women with many talents; and catty remarks are from people who are not very sensitive or do not know how to curb their ignorant criticism. Looks are not everything in life. One's personal traits such as courage, determination to overcome problems are much more important. Cynthia McLaglen
