In North Carolina we got sent by Google maps down a golf cart size road. We have been sent through small town alleys. We pull a trailer. Now I'm looking onto a RV Garmin unit. Thanks for your review. We do rely on paper maps to and love them. This is just another tool. Take care.
Yes, no matter how good a GPS is, no one is as good as the driver and their navigator! We really like this unit, but in Utah this past summer, it tried to send us down a "road" that was probably last used by a covered wagon. We opted to wait for the next intersection. LOL Thanks for watching and commenting!
I can agree with the trust but verify with GPSs. I bought a Garmin (I can't remember if it's the 890 or 790) but it took us 20 miles past my sister-in-law's house only to turn us around and run us back on the same road. No there was nothing on the southbound exit where we couldn't take that one. Sometime they're just weird. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
I remember a number of years ago when we were using, I believe, a TomTom GPS unit and it tried to take us to Jessi's grandparent RV park and it had it on the wrong side of the road. I said, "The GPS says it's up ahead on the right." Jessi replied, "I've been coming here since I was 4 years old, it's ahead on the left." Yeah, Jessi was correct!! -Ari
Last week I had google maps drive me past the business I wanted to go to and take me 1 mile further into the back of a huge cemetery where the back of the business I wanted was on the other side of the cemetery wall. While we were backtracking a massive pickup truck hauling a huge trailer with party equipment in it came into the cemetery. They were going to the same place we were. I don't know how they ever got out of there with all those tight turns.
Wow, that is crazy! We've been in a few situations with Google Maps where I said, "Well, at least we're not hauling a big trailer." This is why we now have a dedicated RV GPS! Thanks for watching and commenting. -Ari
I always pictured the Trekers just going where the open road takes them while getting into Hollywood type high speed chases with several State Highway Patrol units in hot pursuit aka Smokies...🚨
Great video! Off topic question, looks like you have an extension on your side view mirrors. Do you like them and would they be helpful on the Road Trek? Where did you get them.
Thanks! We purchased those from e-Trailer.com, here's the link: www.etrailer.com/Towing-Mirrors/Chevrolet/Express+Van/2022/LVT-1700.html?VehicleID=20227016821 I never really felt like I needed them with the Roadtrek, but I do find them incredibly helpful when towing the trailer. They're designed to fit different sized mirrors based on the year, make and model of your van. -Ari
I have some reservations about Garmin. I have a smaller unit in my car, which I update several times a year. It is now about 4 years out of date on local speed limits. These are on roads I drive almost every day, and which have had speed limit changes over the years (some increased some decreased). If Garmin can’t keep up with changes to speed limits, can I rely on them to be up to date with data such as bridge clearance? I’ve also had problems with destinations. I was once taken to a bank instead of a museum (Trip Advisor app to blame) and been taken 20 or 30 Km to destinations which were supposedly only 3 or 4 Km away - difference between road distance and “as the crow flies”.
We have not had any issues with Garmin staying up to date with data on speed limits, or any other functions. Maybe the newer models update more frequently and that takes care of that? Hard to say. As far as the total distance versus crow flies, we have noticed that on all GPS programs lately, even including things like Google Maps. You'll look to see how far away something is and then decide to go. And when you say start directions, suddenly the distance becomes much further because the first reference must have been as the crow flies, which doesn't do any of us any good!

Ha! I have made the comment a few times when starting out, "We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there..." LOL -Ari
