I Always went by the package instructions of how to cook grits. I'm still learning new things. Praise God for TH-cam and the people who take time to teach things. 👍
Good morning! Yes we ate sugar grits when mom fixed them. But I do eat them different with other recipes. And yes washing grits even cornmeal is a true plus. Thank you for showing and being clean!!!! For me prepping cook space is wipe down , start coffee, get food out and ready for my great niece and nephew back in the day, when I lived with them. Once I was told that I had issues! OH NO I DON'T! My food , raw veggies, meats, fruits, fish, poultry, all washed and any frozen bags, and can goods r washed when they come into house before put away. GLOVES are a true must in kitchen. I take out more than two pairs cause I change them. I'm a free hand artist by life, cooked as a cook for places of children, and food places. I was always like this before I ever left home. Cleanliness ran in family. 👌🏾. This is where I always say " Don't eat after everybody." Have a bless day Mrs. Donna.
Hey family!❤ Donna, I make my grits like that now. After watching your other video where you were telling us about "cleaning our grits" I was on that!😉 Honey, not only do they look better, they taste better!😆 My daughter thought I was crazy at first, until she tasted them.😏 Donna, I may be older but, I am always open to learning something new!☺️ It is good to see you and your Dude #1!❤❤
I made grits the other day and I didn’t think to wash them. After seeing this video I’ll try washing them next time. The internet explains that grits are.. “The finished grain products that are typically boiled in water, and served as a breakfast cereal or side dish.” So technically you can eat grits as a hot cereal (ie with sugar) or as a side dish (ie with salt, pepper and butter). Basically, the choice is yours alone and whatever you prefer doesn’t make it wrong.
Well I guess I learned something new. I was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and I know that grits are made from ground corn. My grandfather was a sharecropper and he explained to me that grits were made of ground corn. Sometimes they're imperfections on the corn. I think that's what that black stuff that you see is starch. My big mama. Never rinsed her's ,but I'll give it a try. I definitely wash my rice.
Ms Donna, I love your sense of humor. Thanks for this because I stopped eating grits because I didn't know I could wash them and I don't feel comfortable not washing them.
The black/dark specks you see in your grits are the particles of germ that are left in the product. The germ of the corn kernel is naturally darker in color and it is absolutely normal to see grey/black/dark flecks throughout your 🌽. You also see black specks in 🌮 it’s not harmful. You’re basically washing ALL the starch out like many do rice 🍚
Hi 👋🏽 Mrs. Donna & Dude#1 . We have been washing our Grits for many years. My sweet Mother always washed her Grits and that’s why I do the same. As a matter of fact, my Mother was the only one I saw do that until now seeing that you also do. I was asked to cook breakfast 4th of July. I was asked why I was washing the grits and I told them my Mother did and that’s what I do. They said they had never heard or seen anybody to wash grits. I cooked for about 15 people. The grits were white and clean. They kept running to the stove for seconds and thirds talking about how good the grits were. I also had the bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs and biscuits. (No Sugar)Just salt 🧂 pepper and butter. 🙏🏽💕
Every since you’ve mentioned washing your grits, I do it now. I love eating whiter and creamier grits. But no sugar. Cheese, salt and butter, I’m good. 😅 tfs ❤
@@aprilsunshine7565I do sugar. Depending on how I want it to be sometimes I like savory grits as it is showing on here. Sometimes I make sweet grits but then they can use whatever seasoning you want to as long as it takes good there should be a rule on how it has to be done with all these types of flavored butters, and all these types of seasonings in the world I’m not going to limit grits to just butter and sugar or butter and salt. Lol
Hey Donna! Thank you so much for this video! I had never heard about washing grits until I started watching your videos. As I have said many times, I really enjoy you and your family. You spread so much joy and love. I am looking forward to running into you in your Dude #1 while I am out and about. Stay blessed!❤
Like you Miss Donna, I always washed my grits. I only like salt, however, in my grits. Whenever my sister visits me she wants for me to cook grits. You are right there are no 5 minute grits. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Yes, Ms. Donna! I rinsed my grits for the first time, and it really did work. I was so tired of picking those black specks out (couldn't stand cooking grits) after cooking them. Like I told my daughter, you're never too old to learn something new for something you've always done. I stopped buying Quaker grits and oatmeal because of too many black specks. Thank you so much!
Hi Mrs.Donna you and I make our grits alike, I wash my grits until the water turns clear and I pick out the black specks plus you introduced us to those grits when one of your subscriber sent them and I just love how creamy they are and thank you for sharing
Because of you Mrs.Donna I now wash my grits I use a strainer and a bowl rinse until water is clear remove as many black specks by the way I love cheese and a little salt Thank you ❤
The thumbnail caption made me click so fast. Hilarious. 😂 I grew up country in AR/TX on sweet grits. Sometimes using our grandmother's homemade preserves. So good. Now I love savory, cheesy, buttery grits.
Lady Donna, I did not know, you rinse the grits. You learn something knew everyday. I love me some grits with salt and butter. However; I grew up eating grits wirh butter and sugar, delicious. Thank you and will see if Dixie Lily grits are in my store. Stay safe.
Thank you so much for a nicely presented video! In all of my 70 years, I have never heard of rinsing grits, and yet I have always disliked the black specks in them. I had no idea you could rinse them out. I can't wait to try this method and quit eating dirty grits. Thanks again!
I have always washed my grits!!! I grew up that way and never 5 minutes either I cook them slow and low and my sister taught me to put a little milk in them to make them smoother too
I am watching you wash your grits and you wash them so many times so it gave me an idea I thought I would go on Google and ask what are those little black specks that be in the grit they say they're germ particles that's leftover for the from the corn or the grain whatever it is they say is germ particles so I guess it is good to rinse your grits I think I'll try rinsing them even though I have never tried it before and never even thought about it but I did use to wonder sometime when I eat my grits what was the hard part of the the grit that I used to get a crunch from sometime I used to think I wasn't cooking them long enough but I know I was because I love eating my grits creamy but it was always sometime of hard crunch so maybe now I'll start washing them or eval try one time just to see if it give it a different taste but either way now I know what those black specks are that being the grits because I did go on Google to ask just saying
Hello Mrs. Donna. Thank you so much for showing me how you clean and cook your grits. Mrs. Donna I tell you it is so much better the way they look and that taste OMG. I don't care how long it takes it is worth the wild. Thank you once again. Love you for the information. Hello Dude#1❤️🌹😘
Well well Mrs. Donna you have taught me something new today. I can't stand those black things in my grits. I was wondering how I to get them out beside picking them out. It's amazing how they just started appearing some decades ago. In the south you don't get those black things. One of my church members use bring several boxes back when she on vacation but she passed away blessed her soul. I'm going to try this out the next time I cook grits for my husband. I stop eating them a few months ago. Thd brand we use is Quaker.
They remind me of Cream of Wheat. I would add milk, butter and a pinch of salt. NO SUGAR, I don't care for sweets. Love to watch you cook😋 But unless the package says to rinse, I wouldn't do it. Also love the apron, all the cereal brands
Good evening Tee Donna and everybody. Since you talked about washing your grits the 1st time, I've been washing mine. I'm steadily spooning out anything dark as they cook. My grits always cook longer than 5 minutes. Thank you for sharing this important information. I said the same thing about quaker grits. You are spot on. I love grits. 🙏❤️
I've heard about rising grits saw my mom do it once or twice and they do turn out creamy but I have to try it. I am a salt , pepper and butter on grits nothing else 😋
Thanks for sharing and absolutely right Quaker Grits does have more specks...I never wash my Grits but will start now and will try the Lily Dixie Grits👍😎

Hey Donna, adding sugar and milk to the grits is considered cereal. I think that option is on the back of the bag/box. It's however you like it🙂. And look who comes in the kitchen just as you're about to plate up those delicious grits by no coincidence lol, dude, number one, lol.
Hey Errya Donna! I just put my grits in the pot to boil and enjoy 🙂Thank you for sharing how it takes time to rinse and pull out those nasty little bits to make them so creamy and delicious. Keep on posting and Blessings forwarded.
After seeing one of the rice particles 'move', I don't blame you Mrs. Donna. Grains are a wild card as I also remember opening up a box of Jiffy Mix and it was a suckah in an unopened/sealed box in there moving around like he was paying rent. Some people are clueless to the fact that many food items sold in the U.S. are banned in other countries cuz the U.S.'s USDA's threshold for safety/inspection is low OR missing altogether. I inspect/wash everything.
Love grits, but have only used instant kind. I did order the Dixie Lily yesterday. I would think rinsing them would remove some of the starch. Which I will do, as I have to be mindful,of carb intake. I like salt, pepper, and butter in mine. Thank you so much😊
Thank you Sister Donna for showing how you PATIENTLY cook your grits. I still use Quaker Grits, however, I cook them 30 mins., add unsalted butter, cheese and yes, I dip those black pieces out while they are cooking and afterwards too. Enjoy your Saturday morning breakfast. 🤗😊🍽🍞🍳🥓☕
Donna, I grew up washing grits. I don't think I was as thorough as you were. I can honestly say I have never washed my grits ten times. I do pick out black specs as they cook. I also have never put sugar in my grits. I'm like Dude #1, I like cheese in mine.😋
Saw the video you did before. Don’t eat them that often, but will try this the next time I decide to have grits. Grew up eating them with butter, salt & pepper, no sugar.
Hi Ms.Donna. ever since you mentioned washing the grits I do it now. The first time I heard you say that I was wondering how in the world can you wash grits without all of them going down the drain. I would pick those black things out after they were done. Once you show us how I wash first. Thanks for teaching. Miss hearing Jaxon saying " bye everybody,"
😂😂😂😂 I sure do know about them pats of butter on the Old school toast Delicious! And I still do make it that way Best toast ever, thank you for sharing your grits video they looked very clean and white I don't cook grits very often but when I do I find myself picking the black specks out so I will try washing them next time I get a taste for some. Bless y'all ❤️
Ms. Donna, I've got a request for an old fashioned coconut layer cake. I love baking but can never find a good recipe for coconut cake. I keep finding recipes with cream cheese in the icing but it's not what I recall my grandmother making.
""Now, Ms Donna , you on to something,👍 because the very first time I watched your channel you were washing your grits, long long time ago,, I never seen anyone ever wash grits, we eat grits at my house and yes they have those lil black specks in them, I always thought that, that's the way they're soppose to look 🧐, I have to give it to you tho,,your grits Ms Donna look like restaurant grits, and now that I think about it, when we go eat breakfast out and order grits I've never seen those specks in my order 🤔🤔🤔, so they must be washing their grits too,,Anywho thanks Ms Donna for sharing, this video was very educational 👍"", Westcoast Listening 🙏🎧.
Miss, Donna, why don't you use the Smaller strainer with the holes And it's just for the 2 of you. It will still float to the top for you. And let the water drain at the same time. Let me know what you think.
Hey Ms. Donna 🫡. 1st- your hair is growing so fast🥰. 2nd- never heard of or saw anyone rinsing grits but I do see the water runs clearer. You rinsed off alot of the starch. I never paid any mind to the dark specks. Yes, it's Quaker grits- I have some right now. When cooking them that long, why not buy the old fashioned grits as opposed to buying the quick grits?

That was nice of you to send Donna those grits
Flour and cornmeal is full of bug parts but we still eat biscuits and cornbread. I ain't scared. 😊

I enjoy watching people cook things differently than I do. That's how I learn new things to try. Thanks for your grits.

Hi Donna, I’m learning something today about washing our grits. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏽🤗
Please don't. It's ground corn. Those dark colored flecks are not dirt. It's the corn. 😑

Cool water, onion and garlic powder

Hi Ms.Donna. ever since you mentioned washing the grits I do it now. The first time I heard you say that I was wondering how in the world can you wash grits without all of them going down the drain. I would pick those black things out after they were done. Once you show us how I wash first. Thanks for teaching. Miss hearing Jaxon saying " bye everybody,"
Hey Donna Dude I these Grits looks mighty good love this beautiful family 💪💃❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
Yes, Dixie Lily is good and they have the yellow corn grits as well. Oh my goodness you talking about the ho down in your mouth!!❤❤❤
😂😂😂😂 I sure do know about them pats of butter on the Old school toast
Delicious! And I still do make it that way Best toast ever, thank you for sharing your grits video they looked very clean and white I don't cook grits very often but when I do I find myself picking the black specks out so I will try washing them next time I get a taste for some.
Bless y'all ❤️
Bless your heart Ms. Donna...Will rinse my grits but not that many times.😮
My mother used to soak hers and then rinse them and pick out the black and brown spots.
Sending love and light!!!
Donna those grits look so good and creamy. 😋I also wash my grits.❤️
Ms. Donna, I've got a request for an old fashioned coconut layer cake. I love baking but can never find a good recipe for coconut cake. I keep finding recipes with cream cheese in the icing but it's not what I recall my grandmother making.
Mae Mae's happy table, Charlie Andrews and Old school soul food has good coconut cake recipes
Oh yes, sugar in the grits, that good. Thanks for sharing.
I wash my grits now, thanks to you Miss Donna and l can tell difference.
