This is secretly my favorite track on "Graceland" because absolutely nothing sounds like it. I'll never forget how it hit me when I first heard it as a 7 year old when the album came out. It was like hearing music for the first time and I was never the same after this. This was the track that made me love music. I mean this is a pop tune. You can dance to this joyfully and yet complexity was so integrated. The polyrhythms of the guitars playing off of one another, those stabbing vocals chants sound like they're from another planet, haunting, frightening, powerful. They sounded like they were marching into battle. All these elements and sounds I'd never comprehended before. Couple that with the straight "four on the floor" beat, the bass not even sounding like a bass -- my god Paul, if you read this, I was seven and I wanted to know what that sound was, I wanted to be the guy making that sound. When I first saw Bakhiti for the first time, I knew that was it for me man. I've been playing bass for nearly 30 years. It's saved my life and my soul more than a few times. It got me through the hardest times and it's a gift that started with this album. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
I can only echo what you say. I loved this track so much I tracked down the original General MD Sherinda song…….which reminded me just how great all the Graceland collaborations were, combining those (to me) exotic yet grounded SA grooves with great American melodic storytelling songwriting. Paul Simon got into big trouble with the ANC over the cultural boycott rules….but to me this was not only fantastic music, it was the perfect demonstration as to why apartheid was false. And thankfully this music will last…..
Sort of. I was watching it but I already knew the song so I didn't have to search the credits for the name or anything. Graceland is Paul Simon's best work, IMO. Love it.
bings me back to Barranquilla 1988, #1 big hit for months, I had the chance to see Shakira dancing this song in my neighborhood when she was 8 years old and I was 9, memories greetings from New York
Hearing this track at the end of ep 1 of Kaos brought back all the memories of my Dad playing this album on repeat. It's one of the few albums of that time where the African soul was shared with the world, and now I am hooked all over again. I am sure my Dad is smiling❤
Tsonga music going global, MD Shirinda and the Gaza Sisters - Nkata mina , RIP General, thanks Paul Simon for taking Tsonga music to the rest of the world. This was the most marginalised music within South Africa before 1994.
This entire album is a masterpiece. Paul Simon was and is a phenomenal musician and lyricist!! I love his music so much and his lyrics have very deep meaning
Masterpiece is the word. Its very difficult to think of a more significant album in the modern age, given the political backdrop. Arguably the finest album since , well, since ever.
En el caribe colombiano le llamamos a esta canción, " los sapitos", muy bailada al estilo "champeta"" que es un género que nace en cartagena siguiendo ritmos africanos de finales de los ochentas.
Here in 2024, Weird Al tour Bigger and Weirder bought me here. I stayed because of the music. This brings me back to a time when I was loved by an amazing man and his love for music.
It seems im not the only one who came because of Kaos😂what intrigued me the most was the african sound from guitar to the backing vocals damn i was right,i got to learn also and it even made love the song more 🔥🔥🔥
Kaos did this, and I'm grateful. Back when we didn't have TH-cam, i would come from school and play : Call me Al, diamonds on the soles of her feet, and this one here until the disc cracked. My father wasn't very happy 😂😂😂
In late fall of 2020 I found this cassete in the supply room of the old highway maintenance shop on the Yellowhead Hwy between Prince George and Edmonton. I plugged it into the deck of the shitkicked 30-year old 4-ton plow truck and I barely remember the rest of the album, this song's incredible energy pulled me through one of the worst winters of my life. Thank you Paul Simon. Music is the closest thing to magic.
Hello I really do appreciate you for being a big fan thank you for your wonderful comments on my post it really means a lot to me.I sincerely hope you never stop listening to my music…..❤️❤️❤️
KAOS Brought me here but, as a South African, I was wondering about the sound. It really sounds like the South African "The Mahotella Queens" and Tsonga songs.
This song came out when I first moved to NYC in my teens. I had this whole album on repeat for about a year! It was majic to see Paul Simon in Central Park! So cool, I I got to go back in time when I heard it played on Kaos!!

Pleeeease does anyone have the lyrics that the background singers are singing? I've been searching since I was a toddler, it feels like. I'd give anything to find out what they are. This is my absolute favourite Paul Simon song. Never fails to make me grin and move and the song itself is incredibly written, and for feeling so lighthearted it's wonderfully complex. An absolute banger c:
The background singers are singing in “Xitsonga”, one of South Africa’s languages, I can’t hear clearly because he’s also singing but from what little I hear the loose translation is something like “you’ll be in pain, why would you rush to love and love men”….that’s just a loose translation 🤣,but you get the idea.
From what little I hear it goes like this in Xitsonga. “He utatwa kuvavo Ungo jaha ku rhandza Naku rhandza majaha” Which loosely translates to “you’ll be in pain, because of rushing to love and rushing to love men”
From the very first time I heard this track when the album first came out, I have always thought that it reminds me of a scene from a Woody Allen film. Everything about the album is incredible.
Sir thank you for the music. Over the years you've been an inspiration to me in my own craft as a producer. I have a question for you though Sir, what would I need to do to work with you on one African epic song?
i'll always remember my parents would listen to this album all the time and it took me like 25 years to realized Paul Simon is the Simon in "Simon & Garfunkel"
KAOS brought me here 🔥🔥
KAOS reminded me to dig my Graceland CD out…❤
Me too :)

It’s my favorite in terms if fun. It gets you going.
I love ‘Graceland’ 💖 Paul Simon is America’s all-time, best singer songwriter ⭐️
Billy Joel gets no love?
John Prine? Willy Nelson?
Bruce Springsteen? Bob Dylan? Tom Waits? Carole King? Brian Wilson? Stevie Wonder? Ray Charles?
Al Jankovic?
Paul's a poet... story teller.... brain movies.... such cleverness. Oh, did you know he's also a musician? DUH!
Un éxito total en la república de Colombia…. Barranquilla - Cartagena y toda la costa… 🫡
Cierto que si, la canción favorita de mi madre querida, se ha convertido en una de las mías
Uff años 80
I just got accepted into a Fulbright program and I'm playing this song nonstop!!
Hey, Congratulations !! May God bless you !
Congrats, and good luck!
Congratulations! I bet you move so easily all I can think of is sunlight! 😉 What are you studying?
Congratulations! I'm here because I just read a news article that mentioned Fulbright scholars, and it reminded of this song.
But did you get into the cinematographer’s party?
This is my mother's favourite album of all time and one of my faves too, and this song is easily my favourite from this album ❤
If I ever meet Paul Simon in person, the first thing I'm going to say to him is, "Don't I know you from the cinematographer's party?"
lol
I'm gonna go find him before you so I can say it to him first to spite you
this song = my dad
KAOS reminded me what a good song this is. Loved this album in my 20s.
Who is that?
Kaos brought me back to this album and many others because the entire series has brilliant music. So nostalgic 🫶🏼
Sort of. I was watching it but I already knew the song so I didn't have to search the credits for the name or anything. Graceland is Paul Simon's best work, IMO. Love it.
Paul Simon is the best composer and lyricist of the past 60 years.
Err McCartney
Agree.

Grew up with this album. Inspired me to make South Africa my second home.
Here in 2024, Weird Al tour Bigger and Weirder bought me here. I stayed because of the music. This brings me back to a time when I was loved by an amazing man and his love for music.
Such a fantastic song, it gives you goose bumps every time you hear it. Graceland is up there with Sgt Peppers, Pet Sounds easily.
Nice list, the amount of work talent and great minds that went into these three. Although Pet Sounds could have been Brian Wilson's solo album too
Great as Sgt. Peppers and Pet Sounds are, I still prefer Revolver and Beach Boys Today.
And to be fair, it's one of the most iconic albums of the 80s after Thriller.
I just know that I love this track... But who am I to blow against the wind?
💙
You said what you had to say we come and we go 🤷🏻♂️
Woo Woo Woo Woo Woo Woo...😀

This Album got me through some tough times in the late eighties 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I'm glad you were able to get through those times. :)
Me fascina la forma que describes lo que sientes con la musica
This song makes me miss the late General M.D Shirinda
Kaos did this, and I'm grateful. Back when we didn't have TH-cam, i would come from school and play : Call me Al, diamonds on the soles of her feet, and this one here until the disc cracked. My father wasn't very happy 😂😂😂

One of the best bands ever assembled playing on this album! I love Paul Simon's voice, but sometimes I just want the instrumental, it's so good!
Lead guitar by late The General Daniel Shirinda from Limpopo, South Africa
KAOS here too ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Kind of envy all who attended the cinematographer's party at this point.
The canapés were breathtaking
I assume she only mentions the party to signify her status. She may never have attended.
Who am I to blow against the wind?
Only beautiful people could go
Pretty obvious…You gotta look a sort of a limited way for an off night
KAOS Brought me here but, as a South African, I was wondering about the sound. It really sounds like the South African "The Mahotella Queens" and Tsonga songs.
KAOS brought KAS xx love this tune
I KNOW THIS IT ROCKS

Paul Simon is the GOAT.
1:06 😂 kills me always
An album that graces time with its presence from an artist that sings universal messages, but am I missing a Anniversary or something?
The album Graceland is my absolute favourite one! I listen to it every spring. There is something to it that just makes me happy! Thank you ❤☀️🙂
I just found this song by typing random phrases that I thought would make good song titles in and I’m not mad.

sorry for them, that series is lame.
Sonido maravilloso lo mejor de los 80 tenia 7 años y aun la escucho
Favorite song right here
This is so good! Cheers! ✌️
Been a while since I heard this--- it holds up well. Really suddenly struck by the gated reverb was on the drums this time around.
D**N Simon is a GENIUS!

Brilliant as a duo and I think even better as a solo!
That's like when I learned the one guy from "Ebony and Ivory" had been in another -- make that *two* other bands
I cudnt help myself she was prettier than Xmas 😁💙💙
What a tune
