  • We almost got killed in Mexico. It's the first and only time we've feared for our lives on this trip. The area in the state of Chiapas is known for its lawlessness, and unfortunately we were in the wrong place, at the wrong time with a camera. The locals did NOT like it.
    Despite what happened we still believe that Mexico is a safe and friendly place to travel to. This experience will not stop our adventure, only make us a little more wary.

    Guys, we just feel like it's worth sharing how we feel about this episode and traveling through Mexico in general. Mexico, like any other third world country, has it's many problems... but for each reason not to go there we can think of another 10 to go and visit that amazing country. We are incredibly thankful to Mexico and its people, first of all for letting us travel through so many beautiful places, but mainly for receiving, treating and looking after us so incredibly well. This event, yet hugely distressful, has not changed our perception at all! Would we go back there? We would indeed!

      Last time I checked, there was only one world, with some developed* countries, some developing* countries, and some under developed* countries.
      People like to use the word, first world country, because it makes them feel better. And most people don't even know why and how those definitions started.

      By the numbers with no judgement. Average murder rates per 100,000 people. The numbers tell a story.
      Mexico murder rate 22/100,000 (2018 Interior Department);
      United States 5/100,000 (2018 NyTimes - source FBI and sample of local police departments);
      Canada 1.68/100,000 (2015 Stats Canada);
      Australia 1/100,000 2013-2014 (Crime Statistics Reporting - Australian Gov).
      Variance in rates in a country depends on where you are with some locales in a country obviously more safe than other locations.
      Thanks for sharing your harrowing story in what seems like an otherwise amazing trip.

    It’s Carlos from Veracruz Mexico. I just met you on my local store. You guys are an incredible couple, it’s great and lovely that you are traveling around the World together, what an Amazing story.
    I’m so sorry and ashamed that you had to go through these, but I think it’s most good people than bad guys.
    Thanks for sharing, sincerely. Your new friend from Mexico

      Hey Carlos, it was great meeting you too! Don't be ashamed... the few bad ones we met along the way make no dent to the amazing histories and time we've shared with all the incredible individuals who we crossed paths with! Thank you for having us in your beautiful country! We loved it!

    WOW! A lot to learn from this experience! Thanks for sharing it.
    Mexico is a country with intense social and political problems - not to mention drug gangs, somewhat similar to Brazil. When I have to go through it I plan to use main roads only, not secondary, unless locals say it is safe, just to keep some distance from this kind of situation. It might be not that pretty but it seems to be "safer". But sometimes it is inevitable.
    Don't show a camera, always carry some money for the corrupts and bandits - in small cash bills, not big bills. Keep their money on a separate part of your wallet/purse. This way they'll understand you don't carry "big" money. They want money and keep on practicing their "job" freely. So, don't threaten them by filming - it might be too late for you when they understand you're not from police or else.
    Breathe deeply, try to relax, don't do fast movements, always have your hands in their vision, always warn them about your movements. This way you reduce the chances of things going wrong. Also, smile, "don't understand" everything they're saying, you're just a "dumb tourist" in the wrong place. They're not looking for trouble, only for money, Don't offend their "masculinity" trying to be "smart" under their point of view and everything'll be fine.What's important: you're all safe and with a new experience to digest. That's real world - a small part of it, thank God.
    One more suggestion - you never exactly how things are. So, always ask the police, border officers which places and zones are to be avoided.
    Keep riding! 99.9% of the people you'll meet are 100%! And I believe you've already met the other 0.1% so, the Sun'll be shining again!
    Have a VERY nice trip, enjoy the road! And keep sharing your adventure with us!

    I think there are three main lessons to be learned from this video. Firstly, don't take 199 through Ocosingo for the near future (and possibly longer). Take the long way through Villahermosa instead or possibly 307 along the Guatemala border. Many online forums warn of the road blocks along 199 around Ocosingo. There aren't many places in Mexico with problems like this fortunately.
    Secondly, it's probably a bad idea to openly film an illegal road block - it's almost guaranteed to raise some hackles. Be friendly, don't have much in your wallet so you can show them how poor you are (like you did with the 'police') and be respectful. Call them 'jefe' so they feel like they are in control and will fee comfortable.
    Third, don't drive away - there might be firearms in the crowd. Try to get away with paying a 'mordita' that you won't miss. The only time this is not really a good idea is if it's real police, in which case you can often get off paying nothing if you ask for a ticket - lots of information on this subject on the net.
    Good job talking things out with the three 'police' at the end.

    It may be one tiny moment for you but it could have been your last. Back in the late 70's I was driving my VW bus in Mexico. I was stopped by a roadblock of cars and my bus was surrounded by about a dozen men with automatic weapons. None of the men looked official. For some reason they thought I had guns in the bus. I thought this was it and I would never be heard from again. After they searched the bus and found nothing, they let me go. I've never been back to Mexico since and never will .

    • @mikereilly174
      @mikereilly174 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You were likely in no danger (unless you were smuggling arms or drugs). There are several reasons a road block like this happens. First is local people who have had enough of gangs in their area and want to stop them because the police are likely in their pockets already. Second is narcos looking for other narcos. Rarely is this a problem for the average driver as neither group wants attention from federales who would investigate should something happen to you.

    Im afraid i would have acted way worse and kept driving until im at nearest airport... while all tires were blown, engine smoking and nearly destroyed. Then walked wife and dog to the gate, purchased tickets, left. Lol, u guys rock. You acted on your gut instincts, and were still cool and collected. Glad you are safe. How is the forcast looking ahead?

    • @OverlandWay
      @OverlandWay  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was definitely in my mind!! Just to keep rolling until we couldn't possibly continue anymore. But the road was wet and without one rear tire we were risking a car accident. We were so close to getting it replaced before they arrived. That would have been the best! But we are all good, that's what matters.
      To be entirely honest with you we are kinda sick of Central America, looking forward to reaching South America to continue our journey. Things here are just too unorganised for our liking... and remember I am Brazilian born and raised. o.0
      Thanks for watching!

    @ChrisLS123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for sharing about this terrible encounter. I had wondered if you'd come across any bad people or situations and how you dealt with it. It sounds like your instincts were good because it could have been much worse if they would have gotten you out of the car. Scary scary!!!! I'm glad the experience didn't make you lose your sense that most people are kind and that it didn't sour your overall attitude. Most people are kind! You both seem like such good young people and I hope that's the worst problem you'll have and that the rest of your travels are full of of nothing but beauty and goodness!

    • @OverlandWay
      @OverlandWay  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Chris! It would be rather unfair of us if after 2 years on the road we let this one single experience dictate our perception of the world and its people. Our 700+ days on the road have been filled with amazing experiences, the best of which are all related to the people we met. So it won't be the bad few that will blur that. The message here is... be aware and smart... but don't let fear stop you from living your life. Have a great day!

    We had a similar situation occur about 10 years ago on the way to San Felipe in Baja. Four men, 2 with what I think were machine guns, stopped us on a lonely road and asked us for a $50 toll to pass. We were so scared that we paid the $$ and turned back north and headed home. Haven't returned to Mexico since and after seeing what happened to you guys, I will never go back. Too many people just vanish, never to be seen again. I'm glad we both got out okay, but it's a lesson to the wise: why take such a dangerous risk, just stay out!

    Hey guys must people don't know this but most good quality mud tires can run without air for many miles. I've always had MT tires mostly because of that. The sidewalks are usually strong enough to keep their shape with no air at slow speeds (less than 30mph). If mud tires are too agressive for your stile then at least BFGs KO2 tires will hold. I say this from experience, not for advertising. Keep on with your videos, I really enjoy them!

    What did was not stupid at all - it was the best decision to make to drive away from that toll road. You can drive for a while on a flat (as you found out) so get your butts out of the danger and then worry about the tires.

    I love your videos and Im so sad for yor bad experience in Mexico..but please let me give you my opinion in order to explain what happen over there for future reference for travelers in Mexico.1. On that part of my beloved country Live very poor people that ask for money... They were asking you for money because They were upset whith the goverment. They are not bad people at all. Thats for sure. They are just oppresed people and has no education. (Bad people carry guns and because you run away you could be killed). Everything went wrong for 1 reason... you were recording. (In the future Please stop recording people doing bad things that applies on all countries) at least dont be so obvious. Unless you love that kind of experiences. As you experience on your traveling through mexico... every body wants to help you and if you met people they want to take care of you.. ENJOY your amazing life... thank for Share.

    com certeza a tua decisao de fugir de um cenario de perigo alem de ter sido por instinto, foi a melhor decisao, poderia tudo dar certo em um acordo, sim. poderia mas tambem poderia ter termnado em uma trajedia e neste caso e melhor evita-la sendo possivel e para voces tendo tido esta opcao, foi a melhor. Eu fiquei tenso aqui so em assistir e como um bom brasileiro, sobrevivido em um pais onde a violencia se tornou banal, esta tambem teria sido a minha decisao, me colocar em seguranca juntamente com os que estivessem comigo. Meus parabens pela atitude, nao foi nada de estupides, foi o melhor que voce fez reagir ao estinto. Uffa esta foi por pouco.

    Guys, thank you very much for this report and congratulations that you passed without personal demage. However there‘s a significant mistake in your report, which should be corrected. This did not take place in Ococingo, but at the south entrance gate to the city „Oxchuc“. Oxchus is located between San Cristobal de las Casas and Ococingo approximately 50 km after San Cristobal on highway 194. The majority of the inhabitants are indigenous people called Tzeltal, the district is one of the poorest in Mexico, repressed by the Mexican government since decades. The region is known for political, etnical and land conflicts. The risk for travellers is medium, as long as you know the rules, which normally means to stop and to pay at road blocks. The „fees“ are feasible. Then entrance gate of Oxchuc is well known for such road block and one should have some 100...150...200 MXN ready for payment, even if the block is not always installed. In any case it is recommended, not to travel alone or during the night on highway 194. Travelling in a group, by rented car, known bus companies like ADO/OCC, colectivos or taxi are the safest options.

      It's set up by locals in Ocosingo to collect money from travellers. They are in a remote area of a poor state and get little assistance from the government, who at the same time take land from the people of the region to give to their wealthy friends. It's not surprising that they take things in their own hands, but they also remove a lucrative source of income (tourism) by doing so.

    Meu Deus!... eu acho que fez a coisa certa! Eu teria feito o mesmo, a única coisa que eu iria ter feito diferente é sair da rodovia e me esconder pra trocar o pneu... e depois dessa compraria um líquido que no momento não sei o nome e que põe dentro do pneu e em um caso assim não deixa baixar a pressão....
    Deus os acompanhe!

    • @OverlandWay
      @OverlandWay  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Também teria me escondido, mas não tinha onde. Ou eu podia me esconder em uma vila, mas dai o risco era de fazerem algo com a gente já que não estávamos mais a vista. Mas não tem receita! O jeito é ter cuidado e contar com a ajuda de Deus. Tudo dá certo no final! Grande abraço!

    Same happen to me in Jamaica back in 2002 there are good people out there but there are bad ones to. I still think you did the best thing running even if you gave them money they still might of raped, killed or beat you up. I know they cost bucks but run flat tires or maybe 6 cans of that puncture repair would be a quick fix and keep you moving in any emergency in the future, and don't beat yourself brother it was a fight or flight thing and you lived to tell the tale, take care guys

    O erro começou bem antes, começou no fato de que já sabiam que haveria esse tipo de pedágio criminoso, e mesmo assim decidiram filmar a cara dos manos como se eles fossem sorrir e dar um aceninho pra camera.
