  • Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral. And there’s plenty of it - it can be found in up to two-thirds of the earth’s crust!
Asbestos has no smell and no threatening appearance. And if it’s left untouched, it isn’t hazardous. But when it’s handled, broken-down, drilled or cut in anyway, it can release tiny fibres into the air. And that’s when it becomes a risk to health.

    VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
As we briefly touched upon a moment ago, asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral and there's plenty of it.
It can be found in up to two-thirds of the earth's crust.
For many years it was used in around three thousand different building and manufacturing products. It's also been used as a form of insulation, for corrosion protection, for fire protection and even soundproofing for its ability to absorb sound.
Asbestos is water-resistant, heat resistant and non-flammable.
It's chemically inert meaning it doesn't react with chemicals.
It's strong - when it's tense asbestos can be stronger than steel.
It's flexible it can be spun and woven like cotton and it's resilient - it can survive for years.
Asbestos has no smell and no threatening appearance and if it's left untouched it isn't hazardous. But when it's handled, broken down, drilled or cut in any way it can release tiny fibers into the air and that's when it becomes a risk to health.
When they are breathed in most of these fibers will stick to the mucous membranes in the nose and throat and they will naturally work their way out. But some fibers will make it all the way into someone's lungs, where their shape and resistance to chemical reaction, makes them almost impossible for the human body to get rid of. These fibers can cause serious illnesses and fatalities anywhere between 10 and 50 years after they've made it into the lungs.

Man I can see why builders used this material. Seems amazing, too bad it will fuck you lungs up.

Asbestos is made to be strong,Can still easly get broken,Also won't want to be breathing in Asbestos,I used to work on Building sites,Me and all the other workers had to wear masks and protective clothing,I done completed my E learning on my work account about Asbestos,Got every question right with out making 1 single mistake of any wrong answers

I wonder if future science will make asbetos materials more safer with modern engineering and chemical processes Because looks like one hell a great material to use Cheap too ? nice

No wonder Toyota's 3VZE engines used it for their head gaskets. All the other types absolutely sucked!

So it doesn't affect you unless cut, or damaged? I mean if it is in tha walls, or somewhere inside, will it still hurt us?

Not unless you cut out drill to release the fibres is mu understanding

Yes that's true, you are at risk when exposed to it's dust, contact with demaged asbestos material, asbestos demolition, etc. But not when it's in good condition or not handled.

@@NkosinathiNathi-B-yk8ex so this is a great an cheap mineral/rock but unfortunately things eventually break down and we cannot use it? If the walls were forever then it would have been a good thing.

They should still use it. It’s the most resilient material out there

@eliotartigue6705 No they shouldn't. A worldwide ban on the mining, manufacture, imports, exports and sale of asbestos and asbestos based products needs to be imposed ASAP. Yes asbestos is a naturally occuring mineral. Yes it is fire resistant, strong and can be used in many different ways, but it's a dangerous carcinogenic product that makes people incredibly sick and kills people every year. It needs to be banned worldwide.
