It is really a neat way to grow your skill. The time element really gets in your head. And feeling an item and then making a replica of something you never see brings some unique quirks into the competition. Especially if you don't know what the item is or what it is for... if you make it and don't know what it is, it is hard to know if it will actually function as intended. Every item we make has a purpose and actually has a function.
I don't drink, as I had a big problem with addiction in the past, but it sure is fun! It is great to have peers who love to forge, its a real luxury to have people learning together and all trying to get better

I am a younger male and have been trying to recruit other young men into a maker group of sorts to learn wood working, smithing and leather work, but no one seems to be interested. Sometimes I feel like I grew up in the wrong time period.
