Nice one Jim, great walk as always, thats very clever having the wind powered air conditioning, i like that, typical as soon as you showed us it two people stood in front of it though, lol.
Brilliant video as always Jim. I only subbed recently but am really enjoying these walks, especially as someone who can't do it myself. All the history knowledge is a big plus too, I bet all those other people wandering about don't even know about all that history right beneath their feet.
Cheers Nick it's good to know that you enjoy the videos! You're right most people who pass there these days have no idea sadly, especially Maiden Bower.
Another great vid. I enjoyed that. About that raised up bit with ditches each side of it. I wonder if the digging up of chalk and flint was a bit more extensive than it looks now. Things like that do tend to get filled up naturally over time. If that is the case, perhaps the ditches were drainage channels so they could have dry footing when they were taking the flint and chalk away. It did remind me a bit of a Roman road, but it's not wide enough. But the Romans can't have been the only ones ( or even the fist ) to work out drainage. Or maybe it was a barrier put there to stop theiir diggings from getting flooded ? I'm probably wrong mind you lol.
You might well be along the right lines there zed, I was thinking about it when I watched the footage and found myself thinking drainage, or maybe rather water diversion. Potentially not even very old! It might simply be keeping the surface run off away from the adjacent road.
I remember the orange rolling so it's not your imagination. I remember being too young to join in but you did it so would say it was mid to late 80's. I kind of remember it being church related for some reason and if that's true then it couldn't of been banned at that point, pretty sure churches only engage in illegal activities if it involves getting laid! The children have done it at their school in recent years also on a little hill in the playground, i think that has only stopped since covid
Great video.
Cheers Lawrence I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Cheers Mike, it's a good idea innit? That cafe is a big glass greenhouse so I guess the wind catcher must work pretty well to cope with that.
