I just spent 4 hours in the nether trying to find a nether fortress, grabbed like 20 rods and bartered and killed endermen for roughly 30 pearls. I missed the nearest stronghold by over 9 000 blocks in the overworld after I found a ruined netherportal to get out of the nether, I had to use a strider to find one and barter for obsidian to complete it. After that I spent about 20 pearls to find where the actual fortress was. I didnt find it for another 2 hours of digging around and aimlessly running through a cavesystem.
