  • China may be close to descending into crisis. Once one of the major power economies in the world, China is teetering on the edge of crippling debt. If China were to go completely broke, what would that mean for the Belt and Road?
From the outside looking in, China has a booming economy. With its exports dominating the international trade game, it might surprise most to learn that China actually has around 44% of its GDP in debt. On a global scale, China might seem like it’s doing fine, but its domestic debt is almost crippling. To give you a better perspective, local governments owe an unbelievable $5.14 trillion, and Goldman Sachs estimates that China’s total government debt is around $23 trillion.
