Watch all of our WV adventures: th-cam.com/play/PLZKRTK1yCEM5a4PAiayjCpGAkRdeCeb5G.html
Safety is our #1 priority and we want to stress that this adventure, and all future adventures, will be done responsibly and with the health of others in mind. Here are the steps we are taking everyday, including in these videos:
😷Masks and face coverings. We wear these anytime we are near others outside and especially indoors. If we don’t have a mask on in a video, it’s 99% because there was no one around.
⏰ Exploring early. We normally start at sunrise anyway because of less crowds, but especially so with COVID. We have been starting our days before sunlight so we can limit our interactions.
🧼 Washing and sanitizing our hands, especially after touching anything outside of the van.
🚐 Being in the van 95% of the time when we’re not filming. The adventures we share are a small sliver of our lives. We are staying in the van all day everyday when working and the only time we leave is to do laundry, get gas, or go to the store.
6️⃣ Keeping our distance. We are trying to stay at least 6 ft from others, which truthfully isn’t always possible (and then we make sure we cover our face).

WV is known for a few things, 1: mountain scenary, 2: pepperoni rolls and 3: friendliest folk in the country
Heck, before we moved we never really locked our doors in the day at all, till 1 day when a strang guy moved in and had a different accent, a while later when my mom and dad left, the door was POUNDING, I thought it was mom and dad, but I didnt here any key rattling, then next morning my bike, was gone, it was stolen

Oh my heart ❤ When my husband and I first moved in together, we moved to Fairmont. After a while we moved for Morgantown for a few years, but in early 2017 we made our way back to Fairmont. It was our home where we lived for 3 years, where our daughter took her first steps and our son met his best friends. We moved during the shutdowns last spring and have been terribly homesick ever since. The dock you were sitting on at Palatine Park is directly across the river from the home we lived in.
And the Tudor's you stopped at was just up the road from the house we lived at in Star City. I used to stop for breakfast every few weeks with my son before taking him to daycare, while I was pregnant with my daughter. A Little Tator was the first food I asked for in the hospital after having her.
This video made me so incredibly happy 🥰

I always thought the Dairy Queen in my hometown made the best Slaw Dog. The minor league baseball stadium for Bowen Field, home of the Bluefield Blue Jays, makes a great Slaw Dog too. Love WV Pepperoni Rolls. Also Love Pinto Beans and Cornbread.
If you want to try some true seasonal West Virginia foods, try Ramps (Wild Onions/Garlic) in the Spring and Pawpaws in the Fall. Both of these food items need to be foraged in the woods or found in the local Farmer’s Market.

Sorry you didn't care as much for the Slawdog. Our hometown, Sissonville, WV, is considered the birthplace of the Slawdog. The history behind it is documented at wvhotdogblog.blogspot.com/ They state that during the Great Depression that people looked for available items to toss on their hotdogs. Cabbage was cheap and plentiful so cole slaw was used as a topping at the Star Light Drive-in in Sissonville (just 5 miles north of Charleston). The truckers traveld US 21 north-south from Ohio to the Carolinas and began spreading the request across Appalachia. Check out the blog I posted. There is a special scorecard for a true WV hotdog. Of course the slaw must be "fine cut". LOL

You have to try ramps if you're interested in West Virginia cuisine. Ramps are usually only available in the spring. Buchannonin WV has a place called The Doughnut Shop, and they sell Ramporroni Rolls in spring. A pepperoni roll with that strong onion/garlic flavor of a ramp.

I don't think people understand how serious the "Slaw Line" is. I was born and raised in Southern West Virginia (moved away a while ago), but I don't particularly care for slaw. Every time we make chili/sauce and do hot dogs and when I don't add slaw, she always says "I don't know where I went wrong in raising you."

I really enjoyed seeing our hometown being featured in your video. The name Yann's is pronounced like Ann with a Y in front.
The cole slaw on the dogs are not my preference, and I live here. LOL I never tasted Slaw Dogs, until a few yrs back, near Buchannon, WV. I think the Slaw would make each taste different, as the recipe for making it is always a family favorite.
The Pepperoni Roll Capital of the World is how Fairmont WV is sometimes described, and so many different people do make them using different recipes, some with Hot dog sauce and Mozzarella Cheese melted on top, some with Hot Dog Sauce, Hot Peppers in Tomato Sauce, and of course the Mozzarella Cheese all melted together. Just YUMMY is my description of them, no matter what the addition you add to them.
So glad you got to visit our hometown, and enjoyed it too. Come back again, and try out some other places to sink your teeth into. lol

I'm a WV native, and they ruined me for hotdogs LOL. I'm not a big hotdog eater in general, but when I do eat one I gotta have the chili & slaw, I don't think I've had a hotdog from anywhere else since I moved. I lived in Chicagoland for 4 years and refused to eat their blasphemous hotdogs with celery salt, pickles, tomatoes & sport peppers! If you find yourselves back in Fairmont, they have a pizza place called Colasessano's that uses provolone cheese instead of mozzarella (it's been like 15 years since I've had it!) that gives you the gooey, stringy pizza slices of your dreams. I can't leave the state without grabbing a couple bags of pepperoni rolls for road trip fuel. Tudor's has a biscuit called the Peppi that's my favorite - think pepperoni roll vibes with the grease melding into the biscuit, but with some cheese sauce added. I eat a lot of salads for dinner when I'm back there to try and counteract the effects of everything else lol.

We posted quite a few videos from the state during our weeks of exploring in the fall. The link to all of them is in this video's description. We definitely loved it!

First thing I do when I go home to WV is grab a "WV hotdog". I have dreamed about them.

Pro tip for West Virginians stuck in Texas : Some Kolache places have pizza kolaches and they can tide you over when you can't get pepperoni rolls... As you mentioned, the bread is a little sweeter and definitely not the same but they're pretty good when recently out of the oven... Go early in the morning! I prefer the pepperoni rolls that have a little bit of cheese and sauce to mix with the grease and soaking into the bread, but they're good no matter what way they come really!!!

Tudors is a West Virginia staple. We don’t think of it as a chain restaurant. Next time you’re in my state, look up Hillbilly Hotdogs. They are the place to get the best hot dog in the country.

We really wanted to go there, but it was pretty out of the way for us this past trip. Next time!

I’m so excited for you guys to eventually make your way to Ohio! I would suggest coming in the summer or fall! I’m going to come up with a list of recommendations to send you guys (and my grandpa’s scotcheroos) 😂😂

I've moved away from West Virginia since graduating, but i still miss the pepperoni rolls. They're a definite comfort food for me.

When you guys go to Tennessee, be sure to hike Alum Cave trail up to Mt. Leconte. You really won't regret it!

Just to let you know that Russell Yann has passed away but thankfully his family is keeping the tradition going.

You guys probably don't have access to an oven, but we make something similar we call a pepperoni roll-up. Take frozen bread dough and let it unthaw. When ready, we use most times mozz cheese and pepperoni and stuff fist size amounts of bread with the cheese and meat. Occasionally, we add either beef or Italian sausage and onions.

    • @AdventuresofAplusK
      @AdventuresofAplusK  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yum! We will have to try this when we have access to an oven!

Peproni rolls makes me think of Double Daves Pizza. That does look like a Kolache. That look on Kathryn's face at 7:24 had me feeling the spice, LOL.
