  • Jazz performer, teacher and composer Tim Boniface presents a demo of a Buescher Aristocrat 156 tenor sax, with both an Aizen SO mouthpiece and a Link STM (late Florida era) mouthpiece in turn. Deliberately recorded with no reverb or EQ alterations. Sorry for poor visual quality! Beautiful saxophone to play. www.timboniface.co.uk Online jazz sax and piano lessons with Tim available - contact through www.timboniface.co.uk

    A tenor saxophone should sound like that for a player to sound very powerful. It's got its own character regardless of the player. If a beginner starts with such great sounding instrument, then you must bet she/he will never ever leave it. The problem is beginner instruments have no in-built character, you have to work hard to build it in your instrument. Now the Buescher Aristocrat is a bonus to graduate your sound to a professional level. Thanks.

    I recently purchased an old '56 Buescher Aristocrat that sat stored inside a house and is complete and straight. I am waiting to get it back from the shop as they are repadding it and going through the horn onside and out. This is a great video, and Cheers to the gentleman playing it so nicely! I am excited by the tone and the key speed is exceptional!

    Very nice. I play a tenor Buescher made in the late 1920's on a Berg Larson 120/1 mouthpiece.

    You sound fabulous on both pieces, but I especially love your sound on the Aizen.
    p.s. Thank you for not drenching this recording in reverb like so many others do when demoing pieces!

    Very intimate sounding, like a Selmer Super Balanced Action.
    I have heard the 156 is better than the earlier "Art Deco", I wondered if this is true and if you know what is their difference?

    Haven't heard of the Aizen make before, but it sounds real vintage. The metal Link sounds Jazzy and bright, but I prefer the first one. Nice playing.
    Just read your comment about how you play with your bottom lip curled in, rather than out. I used to play that way, but now I play with my lip curled out. Facts are really useless in emergencies. Lol

    Very nice comparison. Thanks for posting. The Aizen SO sounds very smooth and warm but so does the Link but different.
    I am not familiar with the Aizen mouthpieces.
    Did you try the Aizen on your Conn 10M as well? do you think it would be a good match compared to the Link?

    • @tbonijazz
      @tbonijazz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've tried the Aizen on the Conn a bit, but not enough to say with much authority! once the Conn comes back from a service I'll try it and let you know. As I recall it was a great sound as expected, but didn't tune quite as well on the Conn as on the Buescher...

    ooh...love your tone and sub tone; very old school sound (that's a compliment...I don't like the hard edged sound that many players now create with crazily baffled pieces). Can I ask what tip opening your Link is, what strength reed you use and does the combo it hit altissimo cleanly? I now use a new vintage tone master 6 * and get a really good response in all registers with a Legere synthetic classic 3.5 which would be akin to say a Rico 4. Thanks

      Cheers Warren. The Link STM (which I now use all the time, on my 10m too) is a 9. I use Rico Jazz Select 2H reeds.

    Love your sound, Tim. I would love to get my hands on this sax and have a question for you. How can you tell if the sax is a Buescher 156 that was made in the 30's/40's/50's? Thanks for your help.

    • @tbonijazz
      @tbonijazz  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi, I think the best thing is to look at www.saxpics.com/ which also has a serial number chart as well as pictures. Crucially, you need the 156 stamp. It may or may not have what's known as the 'Big B' on the bell (mine didn't, nbut many aristocrats do). Hope that helps.

      @tbonijazz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Nick Gardiakos It'a 7*. A little bit smaller than I'm used to (The Link is a 9) but it plays very nicely - especially good for recording, incidentally, and surprisingly tight and punchy for pop too.

    HI Tim
    Great stuff as always.
    I have been playing on a 1934 Conn Transitional.
    Love the sound but the ergonomics give me a lot of pain in the left shoulder,so much that I have stopped playing it.
    My other horn is a 1962 SML Gold Medal.With this horn's ergonomics, I never got any shoulder or back problems but I preffered the overall sound of the Conn. After watching your demo and reading the reviews it's got me thinking
    ,would the Buecher marry the two, that is good ergonomics with a vintage sound?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Cheers Stephen

    • @tbonijazz
      @tbonijazz  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Stephen, I'm not sure you'd find the ergo very different on the Buescher to the Conn - the keys are lined up in the same way, although some prefer the LH pinky table on a Buescher. However, I do know that quite a few people have the strap hook on Conns moved, which is a relatively simple job, and can make the whole thing a lot more comfortable. In the end, I think it depends on what it is about the Conn that is uncomfortable. The SML will, as I recall (I played one for a while) have a modern lineup of keys (i.e. Selmer Balanced Action style) and if that's the difference for you, the the Buescher won't give you that. One more thing, though, is that the Buescher are LIGHT - and that may help shoulder/back.
      I have to say that I found the Buescher really nice to play and very comfortable.
      All good wishes,
      Tim

    Hi nice. How do you compare these to the conn 10m and new wonders ?

    • @tbonijazz
      @tbonijazz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. I think the Buescher has a bit more of a 'french' sound going on - it's certainly nearer a Selmer-type sound; whereas the Conn is the epitome of a big American tone. Overall, I've found I prefer playing Conn, but mainly because of the sound that I'm going for - and the keywork suits me (especially the 10M, which is lightening quick).

    • @tbonijazz
      @tbonijazz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MrFumiste Hi - I'm glad you like it. Yes, it's a great saxophone. This is basically the same as a 'Big B' Aristocrat, if you've heard of those. Broadly, these saxes seem to go for somewhere between £1000 and £2000 here in the UK depending on condition and who you're getting it from! All in all, they're superb value. According to a lot of people, and definitely according to my experience, intonation is exceptional, and the ergonomics are nice. They're also very light to hold. I suppose I could have put all this in the video but it's aimed as a demo more than a 'review', as I'm not a technical expert, just a player who likes the horn!

    Nice sound... What series is it? A Buescher Aristocrat with series 422xxx it will sound the same ?

    • @tbonijazz
      @tbonijazz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hiya, it's serial is 343xxx - so just about into series III. I'm not an expert but I think the 400xxx+ models were made by Selmer and are generally regarded as not as high quality as these. However, as to whether it will sound the same, no-one can tell! An aristocrat one digit either side of this one may sound totally different, and that's without taking into account the player, mouthpiece etc. But in general, I think the answer to your question is that an aristocrat series 422xxx will be quite a different horn. Hope that helps

      Sorry for the delayed reply! The Big B is pretty much identical to the one I'm playing - as far as I'm aware the only difference is that yours will have a difference, slightly more ornate engraving. Brilliant horn; I really hope you enjoy it!

    nice dark tone...i have a Buescher Aristocrat (1970) that has a brite tone and a 400 thats even brighter...I play a meyer hard rubber that darkened it a bit ....anybody know how to darken it more? thx

    • @tbonijazz
      @tbonijazz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you like it, Frankie. It's very hard for one player to tell another how to get 'darkness', of course... but it's worth noting that the Aristocrat you have is not the same as the one above. Before the 1970s, Selmer took over the Buescher line and produced student models under the Buescher name - including Aristocrats. Whilst being decent horns, they're really completely different instruments, and certainly don't have the sweet dark character of the 30's/40's/50's Buescher 156's. (the one above dates to 1954). In short, the sax you have is quite different to this one, so I would expect that's got a fair bit to do with the difference in sound. If you ever have the chance, trying a genuine Buescher from the 30's, 40's or 50's is highly recommended - they're superb instruments and not particularly expensive.
      Of course, there's so much more than that...so I don't pretend that this is the full answer! In terms of playing, I often find that making sure you're creating a nice round chamber inside your mouth can aid the darkness of the tone, but that's just me. The vintage Link mouthpieces, whilst being a bit more work to play, are quite beautiful too!
      I'll sign off now - this is getting too long! All the best

      @tbonijazz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sure - yes, I had a listen. What tip opening do you use? I often find my sound is darker the bigger opening I play. Again, though, it's so dependent on the player!

    • @saxmankid
      @saxmankid 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I play a meyer 8 which is my go to mouthpiece and also a Rico 9 metalite which gives me the darkest sound (just started using it). For rock and R&B gigs, electric blues gigs, I use a metal Dukoff 9 which gives me that buzzy brite sound that people like (but i dont lol)
